Help With An Appaloosa
-
Yes, DP is a darkening gene. It's one of the ones you need to get a liver chestnut. Pheomelanin is red pigment, DP increases that red pigment. It's hidden, but it does happen in Herd Helpers and random creates, unlike KP, which needs to be GMTed on.Spiderweb Stables

I see and so if a horse is a dark shade of chestnut then if could have at lease one copy of DP or if you breed a dark horse to another dark and the foal turns out to be a Liver? Don't they have to have the sooty gene too to be a live chestnut? They are a pretty coat color as well!Celestial Angels, The Balinor Breed! We Specialize In Riding Horses & Ponies!

@HorseAngel I'm not an expert on livers but I do know that in order for a horse to be a liver it has to have three darkening genes. Here are all my livers. (I have a tattoo that I manually put on them so I know their all livers.)

I made a pretty big thread a while ago that's full of links and info about DP. It has a lot of pictures (which I'm still updating), but in the first post is a lot of basic information about it :)
link
Another good way to learn about the different expressions of DP is by going through the offspring of horses that are hom DP (since all of their foals will have at least one copy)
Here's a link to all of my hom DPs (that I've managed to tattoo so far :)))

@Peachtree I absolutely love your thread about DP! When I first saw it when you posted it I was shocked and my jaw was open the whole time! It's an impressive and informative thread!
Can I also mention that 2G Kracun is black liver goals!♥️♥️ That mane and tail with her coat is darling!♥️♥️♥️Thanked by 1Heartwood -
@Wolvevenfrost :x Aw thank you so much! I know I was constantly on the forum asking loads of questions about DP when I first began (and even now there's so much to remember about it) so I thought it could hopefully help some people!
Would you believe I actually got him (and his sister Arrow Wood) at auction. Lucky find, and yessss, the super blonde flaxen look is very striking :D
@Natalya I'm so glad that people are finding it useful (And continuing to contribute)!Post edited by Heartwood at 2019-07-30 14:10:01ID: 247225

What do you think of them? I really like the hom Llp champagne mare! I think I am going to name any champagne foals after something to do with wine, get it?:)Celestial Angels, The Balinor Breed! We Specialize In Riding Horses & Ponies!

Thanks! I thought so too! I use going for more Llp mares to use with your stallion! I got three now, so I am good! What names did you use for your champagnes? I have a mare and a stallion champagne and was thinking about breeding some foals, don't know many wine names!Celestial Angels, The Balinor Breed! We Specialize In Riding Horses & Ponies!
