Gene help bad luck or glitch?
  • I'm trying to figure out why this fellow didn't seem to get any visible Appy spots; mainly why two LLlp crosses doesn't look like the foals genes got any L''s in it? or is L the default -not- gene and he would have had to get an Llp for any appaloosa to show?

  • Llp means the horse has one LP gene. LlpLlp means it has two. No L means the horse does not have the LP gene.

Two hetero LP (LLlp) horses bred together gives you a 25% chance of no LP, 50% chance of hetero LP and 25% chance of homozygous LP.

  • L is the "not" gene. Llp gives spots. Just an unlucky break unfortinately.

He may still be a PATN carrier which means he can throw appy babies if they get Llp from the dam. I'm less familiar with that though.

  • Thanks for the help you two ^_^ I was thinking it was probably bad luck but I just wanted to make sure. Luckily the rest of my snowflake breed babies turned out with appy on them. :D
  • Ok, since both of his parents are hom snowflake, he is too, so if he had the app gene he would be snowflake, but without Llp to turn it 'on', it doesn't express. He could absolutely still throw snowflake babies though- if the mare is, say, hom snowflake and het L and Llp, the baby would be hom snow and have a fifty fifty chance of getting their mom's Llp to turn it on. If the mare was hom snow and hom Llp, the baby would be snowflake, 100%.
Also I just looked at the horse's page, and he's actually a she, so if it were me, I'd keep her (provided she passed SBA), breed her to all hom snow, hom app studs, and get all snowflake babies out of her
