Any Band people out there?
-
I'm starting school in two days, and this year is the first year I've signed up for Band...I don't know what to expect, and I'm really nervous. I just transferred schools and I don't know anyone here yet. Most of my friends at my old school were in Band and I want to make them proud, but I'm not sure how to do that.
-
It probably sounds silly, but do your best and be nice! I have no idea what the band culture at your school is like, but with the bands I was in (I did band for 12+ years, btw) people were always friendly and got a long well (even if the rest of the school was less so).
As far as the actual playing, practice is really important, as is how you practice. You don't necessarily have to practice for hours and hours every day to get better, but if you do, say, thirty minutes 4-6 days a week and you're smart about it, you'll improve quickly. 5 or 6 days is best, it helps to take a day off. The best way I've found is to structure practice sessions like this:
5 minutes of warm up, scales, things like that
20 minutes of focused practice on the stuff that's giving you trouble or that you want to improve. This is the part where you really slow it down and work through those difficult passages and repeat skills and fingerings and such until it's automatic. And make sure to congratulate and reward yourself when you get something that you weren't getting before! Celebrate the little accomplishments!
Then finish up with 5-10 minutes of fun. Play things that you like playing, and don't necessarily have to work on to end the practice session on a good note (ahaha, band pun!)
I hope this helps! If I can ask, how old are you, and what are you playing?Post edited by Taliesin at 2019-08-05 06:54:03Spiderweb Stables

I was in band several years ago and my youngest sister is now. Will you be in marching band, concert band, pep band, jazz band, or some combination of those?
I am really excited for you. Band was challenging for me (I played flute, 3 kinds of clarinet, 3 kinds of saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and mellophone plus was a field commander during marching season) and I loved it! I enjoyed reliving those memories getting to march with my sister last weekend. -
Band geek here and proud of it ( jazz band, pep, marching, symphonic/concert ). Not much I didn't play except the flute and trombone, favorites were oboe and alto sax, and my guitar on my own. Just have fun. Enjoy the music and making memories. My band memories stayed with me more than any others from school have. My band was really into the Monty Python movies and we were always making references and quotes. If your band is into something like that try to learn about it so you can join in. Be helpful how ever you can, especially with younger members, and always ask for help if you need it. Best way to improve and make friends at the same time.

@Natalya1917 I am 16, and a Sophomore this year. And I don't play anything yet. I did try playing acoustic guitar once(but my guitar broke in half, and I didn't fix it or get a new one) but that's it.
@LenasHollywood I'll be in concert band. -
Cool! What instrument are you thinking of starting?Spiderweb Stables

I don't know, and I'm open to suggestions. (I will not play flute though.)
-
That's probably wise lol, flute is one of the more difficult ones to pick up. Sax is super fun, more intuitive, and you can do lots of things with it. I played flute though lol and have only dabbled in others, so I'll let people who've actually played other instruments make suggestionsSpiderweb Stables

I just finished my first day of school. I'm currently "playing" (making sound) a drum, but my Mom and brother say they think I should've gone with sax or clarinet or flute...I want to start with something easy! yeah, I know, I can't keep a steady beat or lead very well but tapping a drum is much easier than playing sax.
-
Update: finished my second day of school, and (starting tomorrow) I'll be playing a clarinet for marching and concert band.
-
Awesome! Clarinet was my main instrument, and I taught myself to play after most of my class already had almost a year in band. Let me know if you need any tips.

okay people, I have a hard decision and would like some help, my dilemma:
I've always wanted a horse, now I finally have a chance to own one, but without having to pay for feed, board, an and tack for it..............
I've always wanted to be apart of something, and all my friends back home are in Band, so I joined Band here at my new school.............
..........BUT I don't have time for both.
I'll never have the same opportunities again for both, so which one do I give up on?!? -
@AlloraKerrhy stick with band. It's one thing you'll NEVER get to do again, I definitely miss it...i miss it so, so, so much... You still have a chance at owing a horse in the future, I promise. It may not seem like it but theres a chance. Whereas band is once and ONLY ONCE. Unless you want to do a career in music. But, its your choice. Either one you choose we'll support you all the way!
-
That's really not a decision that anyone else can make for you, though Wolvie makes a good point. You have to think about what matters more to YOU verses what you'd be doing for someone else, if that's a factor at all.
I have to ask though- why don't you have time for both? In high school I did band (concert, pep, and marching), choir (show and concert), 4H (rabbits, horses, equine drill team, non-livestock stuff) church stuff, cross country, nerd clubs, dance, summer musical, a part time job at a horse farm, and took college courses. I had something literally every day, and frequently multiple somethings. My dad helped with feeding animals in the mornings when my life was particularly nuts and I was most severely sleep deprived, but other than that I did the work for my eight horses and dozen odd rabbits myself, along with helping with all the other farm stuff. Now, I'm a crazy person from a family full of people who are the human version of border collies, and I don't think I got enough sleep at any point in those six-ish years, so I definitely don't recommend taking on that much, but band and a horse seems doable to me, unless you've got a bunch of other stuff going on you haven't mentioned?
Not trying to judge, by the way, in case this came off that way! I just don't see why you should have to give up eitherSpiderweb Stables

My week usually looks like this:
Sunday- Mom likes to do stuff in the morning, and Dad runs Adventures's League from 1-9pm(unless he's in the hospital).
Monday- School and Band practice until 6:30pm.
Tuesday- School and Band practice until 6:30pm.
Wendsday- School and whatever extra stuff Mom is wanting done(time depends on tasks).
Thursday- School and Band practice until 6:30pm.
Friday- School and curfew shortened to 8pm.
Saturday(Sabbath)- Church and Family night.
I have chores after School/Band practice every day (except Saturday), and my usual curfew is 9pm.
I'm not allowed to head over to the ranch until after 8:30am, and have to be back a half hour before curfew/when I'm needed if I go there because otherwise I could end up killing my Mom(she has really bad Celiac and I have to de-gluten before she can be near me because everything on the ranch has beed/is glutened). -
Update: Clarinet#1 was apparently broken before I got it, Clarinet#2 is even worse, there's no other clarinets that the school can provide me with, and I don't think my family has the financial availability to rent or buy one for me.
My Mom says I should try to learn a different instrument, but I really like the people in the section and I'm just starting to learn things.
I don't know what other instruments to play.
:( -
Saxophones have similar mouthpieces not sure about fingerings.
I played Flute in music and band and we had a little instrument switch up and I played the clarinet for a month I think maybe less. I liked both of thoseBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
the band already has too many flutes in it.
-
Check in with the local music shop. I know our local one does a really affordable rent to own instrument program. It’s totally worth asking the question even if it doesn’t pan out. Maybe check a pawn shop or eBay, but let someone more experienced help there, you may find a great deal with some guidance to help you avoid a piece of junk.
What was wrong with the other clarinets? Maybe something that can be fixed? I’ve done a lot of minor clarinet repairs for myself.
@Bandit, saxophone fingerings are exactly the same as the upper octave on the clarinet.Post edited by LenasHollywood at 2019-08-14 15:42:55 -
Dad implied that he wants me to drop concert band so that I can be in a higher up English class.
-
I’m not following… What do concert band and English have to do with one another?
-
@lenasHollywood I was in marching and concert band, but then I couldn't continue with marching band because of the extensive practice time was taking up all the time I had for working and training on the ranch, so I dropped marching band to give me the availability I need for the horses.
I am looking at changing all of my core classes for next semester into College Prep level classes, but if I'm going to take the higher up English class then I'd have to drop concert band as well because the classes are scheduled at the same time.
I'm bored in the regular level classes that I am in right now. My parents are supporting whatever decision I make, but I only have two more days to make a decision.Post edited by AlloraKerrhy at 2019-08-20 17:46:22 -
I attended my first (amarican)football game with the band! It was awesome! (aside from having a headache that was almost a migraine)
I still don't have a Clarinet yet, but I got to dance around and sing with the band. :) -
My band teacher told me during the game tonight that he has a Clarinet for me! :) I get in on Monday, and I'm so excited!
-
That’s awesome! Let me know if you need any tips once you get it, I played the clarinet in school and still do performances at retirement homes occasionally.
