Fighting the urge for a mass cull...
-
I don't know what's compelling me to want to cull down my herds at a massive amount.. but someone tell me no! Lol
Seriously though, Im not running all current mares through comparing as that's a massive hit on my bank account... But it's gotten me thinking that there's a bunch of mares that don't fit into my programs and that I need to rearrange a bunch of pastures since I've noticed I focus more on my liver herd than my KP herd, that I need to do a mass culling on the KP and swap my liver and KP around... How are you all getting around the mare comparing without literally going broke? -
I'm doing a little a day. Since my daily is sitting at 60k it helps recover from it.
-
Mine is 14k so it's a little harder for me.. I definitely didn't start this game right :))
-
Something I've noticed with mine though, is that most of my fillies that came from straws aren't comparing superior to their dams. I may slow down on the straws for awhile.
-
Oh, I didn't either, but I've bought a few decent show ponies at almost every auction for a few months. That helped a lot.
-
I've been checking sales every now and then for babies with at least 30 daily payout.. it's been slow but given the last time we talked daily payout I was at 3k I think, I can't complain
-
Plus I've started putting literally every barn I have through auto shows so that's helping a lot
-
All mine are on auto show. And it's been so long since I actually paid any attention to mine that I told you wrong. My daily is now 74k, but I'll probably lose a decent chunk at rollover this time.
-
I’ve been culling like crazy thanks to mare comparison. I’m saving a few AGA daughters who have outproduced themselves, but for the most part the girls are getting the snip.
-
I've been culling like crazy too. So far, I've cleared 4 pastures with several more to go. It was surprisingly how many 4th gen golds got culled even through they papered better than their 3rd gen blue dams. Same with culling 3rd gen blues that papered better than their 2nd gen red dams. Lost a number of 5th gen golds too. Not to mention the disaster that is my 6th gen barn. Lol.
-
If you want people to tell you not to cull, you've come to the wrong place! lol. A good cull is almost always what the doctor ordered! *snip-snippety-snip* You might even feel refreshed and more excited to start breeding after getting your numbers down :)ID 195859

Maribo is right. I always say to snip or not to snip? Snipping is the answer. (It will also help your bank account!)
Show horses are life. They are literally money printing machines. Most cost next to nothing to show and even if they’ve been sitting in a pasture most their life it usually doesn’t take them long to collect enough points to pay you back for at least their show fees if not their neighbors too (as long as they’ve been trained the whole time)
Mean while your breeding mares either sit in the pastures not earning more points and costing you another 500 hbs each season or they are not in a pasture and able to help support your barn a bit but cost more to breed and possibly producing foals with lower quality than they could be if they were getting the pasture bonus and throwing babies from the upper range of their abilities.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
I've started culling shortly after this post was made X_X
I've culled out most of the roan in my lines, anything not black based (except for 3 brown mares) and W2 (even my best breeding stallion...)
I've gone from 70s in my 2nd gen pasture down to 29! It does feel very refreshing but the work isn't over yet..
I've culled next to all of my 2nd gen A/Blue because most were roan and my 3rd gen A/Blue because they were W2 and roan -
Do it! CULL THEM! Spay them for the dread goddess Arengee!Need to contact me? Read this first.

Yeah, I just culled all of my mares who didn't test superior. I only had up to gen 3, but still! that was about 1/3rd of my total mares?ID #238663, she/her pronouns
-
I'm going to cull down to what doesn't work in my programs and then try testing mares that paper the same as their dams and culling down farther but that'll be a slow process
-
Omgggggggg my daily is like...800 haha!
I love to cull though XD -
Oh, I am going at things with a machete. Starting with the 2nd gens, I am snipping any mare who doesn't pass and then going up her family tree and whacking any intact descendants. I was looking for a reason beyond color to narrow things down!
-
That's what I've been doing, dev. I check the foal records of the mares that don't pass, then go down the family tree and cull anything intact.
-
ahhh i am so sad so many of my mares are only aga :(
usually i'm super unemotional about strict testing on all my babies but having to spay my established mares that i've named and bred for 10+ seasons (and given superior sons, gold fillies ect) is kind of hurting :((HJ1: 133971 -
True it hurts, but you'll have better breeding stock once all is said and done.
-
SilverCreek, those types of special mares I’m keeping. I’m culling 95% of the AGA, but those that have produced stellar foals are staying. Remember, it’s just “about” so the daughter could indeed be slightly better. If it’s a mare that has exactly what I need, I’m willing to let it slide. Getting intact horses that pass SBA is hard enough as it is. :/
-
went from about 800 ish mares to 430ish, probably still need to spay more from this season too. Here's to rebuilding my lines better and better i guess :))
I did notice alot of my blue 4g mares were super stagnant, with 8-10 spays/geld foals and no intact offspring, so they're all showies now :OHJ1: 133971 -
I just redid my pastures and holy organization!
I am a happy sponge :D -
I culled everything but for one mare
CRVS Red Dead Dun KP
This one I kept because I just can't get another like her and I really want her lines lol
I have a huge amount of spays now and a huge rebuild of my KP lines. Surprisingly my Appies were not too bad, or my satin and restricted gene lines. -
-
Wheeew. After going through all my pastures and fillies in the barns, I've done it. I've spent roughly $3,044,000 on the new comp testing.
I've already bought a barn for the new showhorses and it's already full. So now I've got to figure out where to cram the rest of the new showhorses.
I'm debating on if I have enough money left to buy another barn and still be able to finish the breeding season.Post edited by Forestshadow at 2019-08-19 17:26:30 -
I went through and auctioned all of my 19 year olds to make some room, it wasn't enough, so now they are sort of moving from barn to barn filling up the empty holes until rollover and I see how many I loose. Watch this be a low amount heh just my luck. Love to get a new mondo Show barn but still not quite in the cards
-
I need a new barn so badly. I’m trying to save for my first ever 1000 stall barn but it’ll take a while (and nearly 800 IVs). :( But at least this will really help my show string!
-
Yeah. I looked at what the lifetime payout amount was for each new cull before I decided whether to keep her as a show horse or send her through auction so she would be yummed that way. The girls with 0 got sent to auction first.Post edited by Forestshadow at 2019-08-20 08:27:30
