I’m considering purchasing onyx while it’s in the roving gene sales, but I don’t know if I’d like it on one of my current GMT projects (black liver appy & a watercolor black appy, hopefully going to add pearl to one or both) or if I’d like to start a small onyx breeding project separate from them. What’s everyone’s favorite base colors for onyx? Someone help! :))

Well, I kind of love onyx on everything, but I am currently desperately in love with my watercolor onyxes! Like, to the point where I'm not breeding for non-onyx watercolors anymore lol. So that's my favorite! I mean, look at these guys!

But ultimately what matters is what you like it on! My suggestion is to use the search and look for examples of it in lots of combos and see what you like best!

I agree, do some research and look at what you like, Personally I love it on chinchilla because of how it makes them silver. But I've also seen them on silver blacks, livers, and black and I love the look. Also putting them on cream along with pearl would look stunning. But again, find what you like! I would love to see what you decide

I haven't gone into lots of fancy mixes, but have found that it looks pretty stunning even on common base colors.

Wow I'm loving everyone's onyx ponies, you've sold me on purchasing the gene! Now to decide between putting it on my watercolor boy, my freaky friday, or making a grullo boy. :((

If you do the grullo, remember that dun + onyx makes 'phantom onyx' where the onyx markings are much more faint. Also if it helps your decision making process, you're welcome to straws from any of the boys I posted (which includes a foundation watercolor onyx) if you like
Edit: except the chinchilla, when he grows up. He's in house only because his dam is one of Sharaya's. I forgot I put him on there lol

I think I'm liking the more subtle expression of onyx with the dun or pearl, especially with appaloosa or flashy kit genes.

It's popped up on a couple of Onyx Wrong Warp babies...I think it must be the patches that are white and not off/white tan. Normally we wouldn't notice because they're so similar, but when one hits the coding to turn teal...

I'm mostly guessing. But it looks cool. I plan to max all my covers with Leu every season until he's gone and I don't expect to get tired of his foals.
