How do you name your horses?
-
As I sit here and give names to this years foals, I wondered about your ways of naming them. How do you find inspiration for your names? Have you any guidlines for your self to follow when you give them their names?

I have the TV on, and use words or phrases that are said...ID 195859

Lol right now I'm going through and just putting my prefix in front of my horses ID number until I have time or remember to go through and give them real names.
For now my prefix let's me know gender and generation. I have JL (Ladies), JS (Stallions), Z (altered, Z drops them to the end of the lists and out of the way). After foundation JL & JS get a third letter to indicate generation starting with JLa for 2nd gen, JLb - 3rd gen, etc.
When I go to name I tend to be watching tv or have a movie on in the background and I just start opening pages and putting whatever words pop out from the background as that horses name. Or many people use name generators, I've used them a bit. Also for lined horses I tend to combine mares and stallions names or look for themes in the pedigree to stick to tho I must admit that over the last year I have let the naming slip so most of my horses names at the moment are just numbers and it has been a few months since I've even put the prefixes on but I am pretty sure this weekend I caught up on sorting through at least 90% of my horses between both games.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
Sometimes I use songs and literature. Other times, it's movies or tv shows. When I run out of things like that, I use a name generator. Sadly, the generator I use sometimes goes offline for some reason? :/Craven Hill - 86081

I have my prefix, MS. After that the number for generation, MS2 for second generations and so on. I mostly try to incorporate or variate on the names of the parents from the horse. Like my horse Valhalla, every foal of him gets a name from norse mythology, or my horse Pretty Illusions, his foals mostly get 'pretty' in their names or something with or related to 'illusions' (or further thought magic or fake things). It kinda makes it easier that way for me to see directly from what lines the horse comes from :)
For foundations they're mostly kinda random, sometimes directly from what's being said on tv or just something that pops in my head. However, I have most of my exceptional horses simply named MS Potential107Pro. Started with this back when I was a smaller stable and just wanted to divide my horses that were good producers for sure (like Top Notch Producers, Perfect Foundations, Exceptional Producers & Exceptionally Perfect) from the 'normal' producers. Nowadays I barely use TNP & PF anymore and almost only ExPros or ExPerfs, but I still stick with naming (most of them) this way :p
And ofcourse I have some extra's like DP, GP & KP that I'll put behind their names to make searching for special genes/treats easier. My horses only get a DP/GP/KP tattoo if they're really carriers for that gene, when it's in their name they could be but not have been 100% confirmed yet.
Sometimes it is hard to come up with a clever or original name tho, but you can kinda name them anything you like. I have a few horses named after a word from a South Park episode, so when I see them coming along I immediately think of that episode xD

Most of my Exceptional Producer/Producing mares are named after famous racing mares, like the recently popular Stopchargingmaria. I typically come up with a name similar to their colour for foundations. I used to strictly incorporate the parents name into the foal's name but as of last season I'm using 2G to denote 2nd generation and then the starting letter of each parent's names with an x between like so http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3601313. All of my exceptional show horse herd helpers are named ExoSho____ or ExSho_____ like http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3582060 and http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3399908 and any offspring uses the format ExoSho/ExSho and as much of the parents names as I can fit. Only very rarely will I use my prefix as it can take up quite a bit of space. :)>-I breed Drafts and star horses :D

I always put the second part of the sire's name first, then usually something from the mare's name. That way I can follow the stallion's line back to the foundations I used. It doesn't always create a name that makes sense, but at least I can keep track of who is who. If you look at this guy's pedigree you can see how easy it makes it!

I used to name them all... Now I just don't have the time.
Spay/gelds get my full prefix (bjs) and the full 7 digits of their ID.
Stallions that are to be kept intact get just the "j" and their generation, plus a real name. I keep a naming theme (Mass Effect, Star Trek TNG, Dragon Age, etc), but I really like High Five Acres way of naming too!
Fully lined mares get jm or jn, depending on their pt score.
Even gen'd mares get j + gen + sire's name + last 4 of their ID. j5 Daft5386Bluegrass #143376 * Specializing in Iced Axiom (ExPro Cobs) and Iced Phantoms (PF Riding Ponies)

With random foundations such as show horses, or with unamed parents, I either try to name them after funny words or phrases or weird things. Or if I am eatting something or listening to music. With my actually hard core black lines I try to name them with mysterious feeling.

With foundation horses I have had 'phases'. At one time I was naming my ex pro stallions after elements in the periodic table, and ex pro mares after vegetables! When I do a batch of creates from a herd helper I might have a theme. For instance I had about ten perfect foundation creates and I gave them all names to do with sleep (or lack of it) because I was shattered after getting up at stupid o' clock to go to work. I named an exceptionally perfect stallion 'My Feet Hurt' just recently because they did :)) With lined horses I mostly try to get an element of both sire and dam in the name, but sometimes I'll just give them a name plucked from the air.

I always put HH (for high hope) before every name.
Next, I put gen number. So they all start with HH5, HH4, HH0, so on..
If it is a new create, I start something very different so that if I breed it, I get cool names that I wouldn't get from other mares/studs.
I really like when a word that isn't right is right. So, for example, If I wanted a catchy name like "Don't pass me by" I might name the horse "Paz" and call him "don't paz me by"
Or, if I wanted to do Leavin them looking I could name a horse luke and say "Leavin M LukeN" Just be creative and fun :)
I also like native indian names and cool flowers names.
I have a horse named Moonfire Silocia after the flower
and one named Apache Amryliss after an indian name and a flower. -
I usually give my foundation horses a name theme, it just depends on what is inspiring me at that moment. After that, I name the descendants using a combination name based on sire and dam. All my horses get the suffix FS then I add a number at the end to reflect which generation they are.
