Smokey Grullo? Help with a Horse/Breeding for Genes.
  • I am trying to decide what types of horse lines I want to breed: I think I have started narrowing it down to a few different colours. (Also quality, but colours too). But I want to make sure I get it right before getting too far into it.

I am liking the look of Smokey Grullos, and have one here:

Genes: eE aa CcrC nd2D gg ff SS pp Kitw20Kit LlpL ECA3P+ECA3P+ WF: Minimal

Is the smokey grullo colour caused by the presence of Cream and Dun, together (Ccr and D)? And, are there any other things happening here to darken/modify the colour that I should make sure to keep? I like the Appaloosa markings, and see that the ff for Flaxen is there... but I don't know what that's doing, if anything.
  • Here is the mare's mother:

I forgot about this one. xD Sooo, I guess I can see what Flaxen is doing after all. :p

  • A black based horse with dun (1 or 2 alleles of D) makes a Grullo. And one allele of cream makes it smokey :).
In terms of darkening, sooty and pangere are your main darkening genes. Sometines DP. But since Grullo is black based, DP doesn't change the color that much. Brown also affects darkness, but only with recessive agouti (a).
