Lethal White
-
I am hoping to breed my Freaky Friday stud a lot this season but I am having trouble fully understanding the situation with Frame... I know the Freakys all have two copies which would otherwise be lethal. I am thinking of GMT-ing off one or both copies just because I have a bunch of mares with different patterns and don't want to worry too much about lethal matches. However I am kind of confused because I don't even see the Frame gene on the White Factor Risks chart? I see all the W alleles, but not O/Olw... Am I missing something? How do I know what the risks are when crossing frame with other white patterns?
-
Frame isn't technically a white gene but instead it's an amplifier for white.. a more lethal version on W20 so to speak
-
Ohhh... so are there combinations of frame with other white genes that I should avoid? Or is it only hom frame that's lethal when frame is involved?
-
Take it like this. W20 is 100% safe with everything except for W1 and W2.
I've bred a lot of horses with W2 and some with W1. I do get a few that don't make it from my Freaky Friday. But most all make it. I rarely notice I have lost anybody because it just doesn't really happen.
But W1 is not 100% safe with any kit mutation. And W2 is not 100% safe with tobino and roan.
I also breed my Freaky Friday to a lot of Het Frame mares and I do see quite a noticable amount of dead foals. But I still have plenty of foals from the combinations after just a few seasons. -
It is only hom frame that is lethal. Frame and splash can increase the risk of KIT crosses though as they boost white.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Ah thanks guys, I didn't realize there was another section about frame in the FAQ but I think I understand now :) I appreciate the help!
