HUGE thank you to KerredansCorral (and sheepish apology)

So KerredansCorral's sent me a gift literately months ago. I picked it up when I was running a bunch of errands and it got lumped with some stuff and set aside and I actually forgot about it like a total scrub. #-o I found it the other day when I was cleaning the house! She sent me this amazing steampunk faux watch/jewelery piece.
How pretty is this. I love it. It even has the oak leaf on it. So huge thank you KerredansCorral ^:)^ . I love it and will wear it with pride at my steampunk stuff. And apologies for my lameness. I sent you a thank you in GMTs.Post edited by Ammit at 2014-04-27 08:13:35Need to contact me? Read this first.

that is gorgeous!

LOL, I'm glad that you got it, and was getting a bit worried that you hadn't but didnt' want to bother you about it since you have been so busy. I would have put an acorn on it, but couldn't find one, so I just went with the oak leaf. Glad you like it! It's one of the new things that I am working on in my jewelry stuff I've been doing. Right now I'm doing a lot of macrame and beads, since its a bit easier, and people just love the "old arts", as macrame just doesn't seem to be done anymore.Post edited by KerredansCorral at 2014-04-27 19:37:18Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

You don't have to worry about tax stuff until you make over a certain amount (don't remember exactly, but it's several thousand). I've had a chainmaille/wire jewelry shop on Etsy and my website for around 5 years now, so if you want to sell online and I can offer advice, let me know... your work is awesome :)Chivalree/Storm Front Farm on HJ1 #202879

It is not. The amount is more like 500 bucks. And you also need to be filing for sales tax. If you are not paying taxes on your online sales and they find out they will go after you.Need to contact me? Read this first.

You're right, it's $400, to be exact. However, that's net profit.
For the average jewelry seller, it is some time before you start turning a profit by IRS standards, when you take into account all of your supplies and fees. It's really not a reason to be intimidated into not listing a few things on Etsy. It took 2 years before I was turning a profit, and that is with consignment and craft show sales in addition to online sales; if I sold exclusively online I likely still wouldn't be turning a profit. You can sell things and still be considered hobby status as long as your net isn't in the positive.
In my experience, the average person who is making jewelry as a hobby and starts making a few sales online is still in hobby status for some time, because we spend a fortune on components, beads, etc., before we ever list the first thing for sale, and there are other expenses (sellers' fees, Paypal fees, etc.) to take into account.
You should start keeping track of what you spend on supplies, tools, and Etsy/Paypal fees as soon as you start selling, and also what you make (although, if you're using Etsy, they keep track of that for you). Even once you start turning a modest profit, you can still file with your social security number and not necessarily need a business tax ID number, although I'd get my accountant's advice about that, depending on what else is going on with your return. If you show a loss too many years in a row they'll want to know why you're claiming to be a business when in fact it is a hobby, because you're not making any net profit.
As far as sales tax, you're generally required to charge sales tax only to customers who live in the state you're physically in, or have a brick-and-mortar business in, although this varies from state to state. Here's a link that gives state by state details. http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/50-state-guide-internet-sales-tax-laws.html
Technically the consumer is supposed to file a "use" tax on things they buy on the Internet and pay it... but this is not something that has ever been enforced. It's likely that we'll see some changes to internet tax laws in the fairly near future since it's a LOT of revenue that isn't being seen, and state and local governments are all too aware of that fact.Chivalree/Storm Front Farm on HJ1 #202879

You do not need a tax id. As long as you are sole proprietorship you social IS your tax id number. There is no need to get a tax id number at all.Need to contact me? Read this first.

That is a beautiful piece! I design and create beaded items but have never done anything in the steampunk line. I love the balance and flow of it, what a lovely gift :)
-
That is absolutely stunning! Please please let me know if you set up an Etsy shop, I would definitely be one of your stalkers/customers.
I was at the big Comic Con last weekend, lots of steampunk stuff - nothing there that good and there was a lot of professional shops there. -
That is VERY cool! Really nice work : )~olas~
