Will Boosting Help?
-
Added SplashM to this guy here:
MS1C Belgian Chocolate
(believe it or not it was actually an accident but I'm kind of in love) and was wondering if I added a boost to him if he'd paper up to B and work as a good foundation to the majority of my Red foundation mares. I'll of course use him either way but I have way more Red mares then Yellow maresPost edited by kgstable at 2019-10-11 10:17:15 -
Yes. I think even a 1% boost gets him to B, but that would be a low B. To get him to the same level as an expro/experf he would need a 5% boost.ID 195859

@Maribo thank you! So he wouldn't work well with Exceptional producers or exceptionally perfect mares even if he was boosted 1% (That's the only boost I could get right now)?
-
@KGStable you'd just have a higher chance of getting snipped foals. I do C/Red papered breedings a lot and although some do get snipped I do get quality foals
-
@RutledgeRanch Thanks so much! I might test with with a few red mares one season then and a few yellow mares another season and see what happens! What would you say your ration to snipped vs. unsnipped is with a red/C cross?
Sorry for so many questions but I've always bred Red/B, Yellow/C, Blue/A etc. etc.Post edited by kgstable at 2019-10-11 12:00:01 -
Also don't forget about pastures. You can boost up the foals a good bit that way, even from off-papered crossesSpiderweb Stables

And if I can add my own question, @Maribo am I understanding this right, that perfect foundations are at 100% and ExPros are 105%?Spiderweb Stables

@Natalya1917 Very true! I always forget about pastures, right now I only have one that I use for my 2nd Gens but I may be switching my foundations over to get more (hopefully) Blue 2Gs next season, maybe I'll stick White Chocolate in there and see how he does
I think you're right about perfect foundations vs Expros, so Maribos comment earlier about him needing a 5% boost to be to par with my Red foundations makes sense. But pastures only increase the quality from the mare? Not the stud right?Post edited by kgstable at 2019-10-11 12:12:36 -
@KGStable lemme see if I cant find the foals who I've used for a C/Red breeding
-
So I'm gonna use my Chinchilla guy as an example. Since I've had to pair him with mostly red mares. Out of 42 foals 27 got snipped and 15 were intact

Pastures increase the quality of the foal.
The way it was explained to me, each cross has a range of possible pt and breeding test scores that it can produce. Each day the mare is in the pasture, the odds of the foal getting a higher score in that range edges up a bit more. So no matter which way the range is skewed, pastures help balance it out.
I don't actually know this for certain, I'm still a newbie too, but that's what I was toldSpiderweb Stables

Pastures don’t increase the quality of the mares it just raises the low end of the quality the mare can throwBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1Ammit

Thanks guys! I think I'm going to boost him after next season! i appreciate all the help!

It should work out fine. I used to only breed C to Yellow and B to Red, but my 2nd gens from C/Yel crosses could not seem to produce good enough 3rd gens.
The last two seasons I bred ExPro/ExPer mares mostly to my C stallions, and Yellow mares to ExPer stallions. The pasture bonus seriously helps -a lot-. Plus I'd rather have more fail breeding advice rather than more pass that and then fail other testing- BA is free!
OK I gathered my notes on 4 different stallions. All these were to mares with no pasture bonus at all, and the stallions are regular (non-perfect) "C" foundations.
101 foals with Yellow mares:
Showable Only/Failed: 20
Yellow/C: 59
B/Red: 22
Then 26 foals with ExPer/ExPro mares-
Yellow/C: 14
B/Red: 11
A/Blue: 1
Just from that you can tell that even though more foals did get snipped just from breeding advice, even those papered better.Thanked by 1kgstable -
He is only two, you could add further boosts when you have the extra funds.
-
@SherwoodStables Thank you! I put most of my foundations in the pasture to try for next season!
@Pagan Thats very true! What is the cut off age again for boosting? I never boost so I never remembered hahaPost edited by kgstable at 2019-10-11 22:18:59 -
I believe the horse has to be no more than 4 and have no living foals.
-
@SandyCreekAcres thank you!
-
Yep, you have time! My Baroque girl will be 4 next season and so far she’s gotten 2 1% boosts. :)
-
@Sharayah Thank you! He's going to be 3 next season so I might boost him and keep his foals so I can sell them back if I decide to boost him again
-
I breed from mostly C/Yellow foundation stock and with those lines it is still entirely possible to get Star/Gold at 4th gen. Doesn't happen very often but it's not impossible. I expect Red/B at 2nd gen, Blue/A at 3rd gen.
-
@Forestshadow I think that's similar to how I'm going to start my breeding lines. I need another pasture lol #:-S
-
So...how many pastures do you have? Please, do count them. =))Thanked by 1kgstable
