Two of my favorite authors (sorry hard to pick just one) are Emily Loring and Grace Livingston Hill. I used to love them growing up and I still have a very big collection of them, although Emily Loring is hard to find unless you use the internet. I have a lot of books. The only thing my husband complains about...my book collection.Post edited by bluchrystals at 2019-11-06 07:28:21

Hahaha, I am pretty sure that my cause of death will be drowning in books :))
I have actually not read anything by them, so thank you so much, I must definitely try to look it up!Post edited by Herzeloyde at 2019-11-06 07:30:56 -
Ooooh, books! I don't read as much as I did pre-baby, but I do always have a book up on my phone. I've been reading CJ Cherryh recently, and have really enjoyed her work, especially the Fortress series! An all-time favorite of mine is RA Salvatore, of course, and for more sci-fi work, Greg Bear ( Darwin's Radio was a random airport pick-up that wound up being a favorite book) or Michael Crichton. I <3 books... :)ID 252818 | Breeding for TE livers, with satin hopefully

I love reading. Once In middle school I got in trouble in math class for reading, lol. Right now I'm in the middle of the book Art Of War& other classics of eastern philosophy. I also love to read books like warrior cats (middle school me talking), I love manga (Pokémon, crique du freak and others). There is a book about the last days of hitler im getting ready to read. I also love to write fan fic (I mean who doesn't? lol), I have quite a few walking dead ones, I have one about one direction (cringy I know, I was like 11. I'm 20 now). Im really really into philosophy and literature, my favorite book is How to kill a mockingbird.
The reason I chose art of war is because the words in that book can literally be applied to todays war tactics. Once you get to reading you realize that todays war tactics are somewhat based on that book.
“All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.”

My all time favorite author is Terry Pratchett. I devoured his books, including multiple re-reads, radio plays, and a couple movie adaptations of varying quality, from the age of 11 (first one: Good Omens, which he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman. One book, introduction to two great authors) and he ended up being a formative part of life. I think my favorite books of his are Going Postal, Night Watch, and Nation (non-Discworld book).
-
Pratchett! I totally smile every time I read your signature, @Chateau. I actually just finally read Good Omens... in like a day, lol.
I love lots of styles and authors, but anything that can surprise me into actually laughing out loud shoots to the top of the list. In similar-ish style to Pratchett, I think my favorite, if I had to pick one, would be Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's just so ridiculous! Tamora Pierce's stuff, Circle of Magic, Song of the Lioness, had a big impact on me as a kid, so that should get a mention too. I actually have a tattoo from those books as an homage to my love of literature and reading.
I write too, some fanfic but mostly original stuff.Spiderweb Stables

Oh yay! I would post here even if there wasn't a prize! I am still not even 24 so this might be a little kidish for everyone but I Love Greek and Roman mythology that is what my favorite author (Rick Riordan) is mostly known for! I have literally read All his books and series(some a few times over!)
I am currently waiting for the next book to his latest series to be out! Books by him are Percy Jackson And The Olympians(love percy, he can also talk to horses!) The Heroes Of Olympus, The Trials Of Apollo (his current series) and some books with other mythology like Magnus Chase And The Gods Of Asgard (you don't know Thor until you read it! Its hilarious!) And The Kane Chronicles (Egyptian mythology with wizards and magic!) He also has a few companion books and some sort crossover stories too! I have read them all and read whenever I can, would read all night if I could! I have a few other favorite authors of course but it would be a whole list so I stuck to the one I am reading now, lol! Also like the Warrior Cat books!Celestial Angels, The Balinor Breed! We Specialize In Riding Horses & Ponies!

So my favorite book series ever is Warriors by Erin Hunter.
In 6th grade, many years ago, we had to choose a book to read for literature circle and one of the options was the first book of the first part of the series; Warriors: Into the Wild. Since the book was about cats, I immediately knew which book i was gonna choose :) So i started reading book 1 and fell in love. So i would go to the school library and continued to check out the rest of the books in the series as i got to them. I am now 22 and graduated from college and i am still rereading the series every time i finish. I literally love these books so much that i will read the entire 24 book main series, and then immediately start all over once i finish the last book. **There are 4 parts to the main series. Each part is like a mini series but can't be read independently or you lose a ton of information. There are 6 books in each mini series/part.
And fun fact, my favorite character isn't even part of most of the series. Her name is Hollyleaf and she comes in at the third part (13th book) and is only in the third part and then comes back during the very last book (book 24). So we only see her as a character for books 13-18 and book 24. My second favorite character is her blind brother, Jayfeather. I love his prophetic abilities and just his overall character. He comes in at the same time as Hollyleaf in book 13 and stays for the rest of the series.Post edited by HayesStable at 2019-11-06 11:00:13Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

I love to read, but I have two tiny bibliophiles dominating my reading time lately - so I'll share my favorite read-aloud stories for the two-and-under crowd. Other than the classics (Dr Seuss, Curious George, etc) we really love many picture books by Sally Lloyd-Jones - her prose is delightful and carries a slight accent of British humor; "Hats Off For Mr Pockles" is a good example of her work. We are also fans of David Lie's "Bat Books" - the rhymes are fun to read and his bat illustrations are adorable; pick up "Bats at the Library" if you want to check them out. Last but not least, our two most-loved board books are "The Pout-Pout Fish" by Deborah Diesen and "Little Blue Truck" by Alice Schertle. :)
-
@Taliesin haha you should so read it and see for your self! Can't really explain it but he gives all his mythology characters a modern twist to them and it's so funny how he does that!Celestial Angels, The Balinor Breed! We Specialize In Riding Horses & Ponies!

I write and I read. I have 5 published books, a couple of poems and a long list of books to read.
But the following poem I wrote about a year after my house burned to the ground.
I chose it to show that hitting rock bottom isn't the end. When you have nothing, you can give up or go all out. When you go all out, good things can happen.
“I’ve got nothin’,” I said
as I looked out over the pile that
was my clothes, my house, my bed.
It broke my heart
to think of great-grandma’s
antique teacart.
“I’ve got nothin’,” I cried
when I found the body
of my cat who had died.
I see nothing but ash
as we throw the remains of
all my stuff in the trash.
The place still smelled of smoke
but as we cleaned
I realized I was not broke.
I had nothing that day,
but over the course of a year
life has found a way.
I was at the end of my rope
until the new house
filled me with hope. -
Wow! That was strong and powerful! @Dunappy9

ChateauAlbre? Did you see the Good Omens series on TV? I am a die hard David Tennant fan, which made it even BETTER!

Oh so much reading over here! Recently it has been all veterinary textbooks. My favorite author is Jane Austen. Hugh Steven King fan, trying to finish the Dark Tower series and really loved Sleeping Beauties that he cowrote with his son. For a little mystery, Ruth Ware, I found her books at Target lol. I also really fell in love with Jill Harkness' Discovery Of Witches series. Read the books and watched the show. As a kid my favorites were Anne of Green Gables and I would love to reread them.
-
I love reading, but between my job and school just don't have time to do much reading for fun anymore.
Some of my favourite books are the classics like The Count of Monte Cristo, Tess of the d'urbervilles, Dracula and of course I can't forget the Sherlock Holmes stories! I honestly dont know why these tend to appeal to me more than more modern literature as some of the other classics I've absolutely hated (looking at you Madame Bovary...). -
I really enjoy reading but I haven't done much of it in the past few years. My all time favorite book is King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry (Its a horse book BTW). I don't have just one type of book that I read but the ones I do are usually science fiction, fantasy, and some YA novels (they have to have an original plot). Some books I think people should check out are Eragon by Christopher Paolini and Beauty by Robin McKinley. Beauty is a retelling of beauty and the beast and is probably a close second to being my favorite book. Eragon is really good, there is also a movie for it that is decent as well although not entirely true to the book.Post edited by BlackBloodlines at 2019-11-06 18:37:00ID: 253959

@BlackBloodlines I love Marguerite Henry! I had everyone of her books on my shelf growing up! King of the Wind is so good. Justin Morgan Had A Horse, White Stallions of Lippizza, and Misty were my other favorites. Black Gold is another good one by her. Have you read the other 3 books by Christopher Paolini? They are just as amazing as Eragon! Robin McKinley is a genius! Beauty is the best version of the beauty and the beast fairy tale. If you like that one, check out The Blue Sword, and it's prequel; The Hero and the Crown, both by Robin McKinley as well.

Books are my passion. Do not disturb, reading is my mantra.
My tastes run to science fiction, fantasy, historical, etc. and my favourite authors include Sharon Kay Penman, Mary Stewart, Marion Bradley, Anne McCaffrey, Katherine Neville, JK Rowling, Philip K Dick, William Gibson, Issac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, JRR Tolkien, Stephen King, Raymond Fiest, Michael Moorcock, Orson Scott Card, Terry Pratchett
At the moment my favourite author is Robin Hobb (also known as Megan Lindholm). I discovered her when I came across a 1995 book called Assassin's Apprentice. It dealt with a character called FitzChivalry or more commonly known as Fitz, an illegitimate son of the Prince of The Six Duchies. Fitz has two ancestral magics, the 'skill', from the supposed royal blood and the 'wit', a despised beast magic. Fitz is trained to serve his king from behind the scenes as an assassin.
Fitz goes on to become the main protagonist in three trilogies and is part of a sprawling saga that is the Realm of the Elderlings.
I genuinely cried when I finished Assassin's Fate, the final book that wrapped up the entire series. Having spent over twenty years following the (mis)adventures of Fitz was one hell of a journey.
-
I love reading! Jane Austen and JK Rowling are by far my favorite authors of all time although I have discovered (or rediscovered) at least 6 new authors just in the past few months.
When I think of a favorite quote (lets be honest there is more than one) I always remember the first time I read the part in Deathly Hallows where Dumbledore asks Snape if he still loves Lilly and all Snape says is "Always". So much power in that one word and it changes how you view Snape's character. It's really powerful. I doubt anyone on this thread dismisses the power of the written word, but the most vivid example of the power a single book can have is walking through Central Park the morning after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released. I am not exaggerating when I say that everyone I saw in Central Park was either reading that book or I saw it peaking out of their backpack or they were carrying it around in their hand. It was everywhere. I remember thinking how incredible it was that one book could captivate so many people all at the same time.I love Warmbloods with lots of Sooty and DP. Dark Mahogany Bays, Liver Chestnuts, and Blacks make me super happy. I love horses with color, dfp1, nd1, gray, GP, and KP on the dark base. One day I would like to have a herd of high pt, well papered dark beauties. ID# 257941Thanked by 1Herzeloyde -
Books are my oldest and most steadfast friends.
Favorite authors include Jacqueline Carey, who is a world-class worldbuilder; Neil Gaiman, who makes the English language dance; Terry Pratchett, who was a master of puns and humor; and Charles DeLint, who skillfully weaves together European and Native American mythologies.
One can never have too many books, unless it's moving time. -
Neil Gaman! I just read Neverwhere for the first time. I loved it!
-
I read ... I read everything ... I have always read everything lol. My mother in law got me a kindle because my bookshelves were taking over the house. I even read War and Peace, just to say I read War and Peace ... (dry by the way, but a classic)
I loved Pride and Prejudiced, Sense and Sensibility ... I am huge for the classics. I have read all the Twilights, because a student of mine challenged me too when I said I didn't like the concept. I enjoyed them, still don't like the concept ... to which we had a conversation about years later when she said she could see (with a little age) where my dislike would be. I have read all the Harry Potter books, I have read all of Rick Riordan books ... all of them. I have read almost every fantasy novel ever written (terry Pratchet, Terry Brooks (Magic Kingdom For Sale sold), Tad Williams, J. R. R. Tolkien (all of them not just the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings but all). I have read every book written by Walter Farley (oh yes people The Black Stallion), I have read every Piers Anthony Xanth novel (they started to get a little cheesy near the end but still good ... pillow trees... love it). Ive read Steven Erikson (anyone who loves Glen Cook's Black Company books neeeeeds to read Eriksons Malazan books) of course Glen Cook. I have read all Anne McCaffrey ( Pern as well as Killashandra, Get Off the Unicorn) as well as the ones her son wrote with her.
Then my taste goes to fun I've read Seth Grahame-Smith Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter and Unholy Night. I'm in the process of tracking down Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dreadfully Ever After. I have read all of George R. R. Martin (before they became popular and wish he would finish the series) as well as Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. I have also read W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear People series, Jean M. Auel Clan of the Cave Bear series. I own the complete works of William Shakespear, Edgar Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft as well as Dean Kootz and Steven King. With my Kindle app (my Kindle has been retired since my Mother in Law passed away for sentimental reasons now) that the list is huge, beyond huge. I have read the comments that others have made and have noticed that we all tend to read a little bit of the same stuff, so for me to pick out just one author, one book, one story ... is really really hard. Most of the books I have mentioned I have read more than three times (except War and Peace ... so dry).
But in all of this ... the one thing that has stuck with me ... is Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. I live in Northern Alberta Canada, the Raven is very prominent here. He is the trickster, wise and cunning. I also have the pleasure of have a family that live on my property. My female here is a daughter of a Raven family that have lived at my parents since we moved here 30+ years ago. I have seen her move in with her mate and so far raise five successful clutches. Baby Ravens learning to fly is funny as heck. Ravens mate for life, if a mate is killed or died then the Mate will copy the fallen mate's call. Knowing this about Ravens, it brings a whole new perspective to the poem.
The Raven speaks to Poe, and I do believe that Poe was referring to himself in the Poem, Nevermore ... This speaks to the profound feeling of loss, to his grief and depression at the loss of his loved one, he will never be "happy" again, that he will always dwell with the loss of his beloved. I believe he knew that Lenore was ill and that he was going to loose her, she died two years after the writing of The Raven.
Edgar Allen Poe is one of my favorite writers ... he was edgy for his time, dark and mysterious. He did not gravitate to the light, but the darkness that is within us all and embraced it.
Okay way longer than I meant ...
Quoth the Raven "Nevermore." -
@Corvus, have you ever read Weirdos of the Universe, Unite?
-
No I've come across is, but not a huge fan of the Space fantasy ... not enough Unicorns and Dragons I guess lol. Anne McCaffrey is the only space fantasy writer I have read really.
-
I loved the mythological aspect of it. They meet and survive Baba Yaga, even the Chinese dragon! Although, I don't believe they're really known for eating people. :DThanked by 1Corvus

I really loved them, Magnus was a little harder to get into, but once I did they were great. Thoroughly enjoying the Apollo series, nice to see high and mighty get knock down a peg. I liked the Kane series the best, but that's only because I love anything that is Ancient Egyptian ... (I've read a huge amount of historical fiction on Ancient Egypt, kindle is loaded with them) Shush on the ending I haven't gotten to the end yet, just finished Nora Roberts Year One and Blood and Bone, trying to get my hands on a copy of Ritual of Magicks ... also into my fourth read of It by Steven King and working on a book six of the Monster Squad series ... and yes this is all at the same time. I have half an hour to kill before work so I sit my car and read ... and an hour before bed. (I used to be an educational assistant, it honed my reading skills, also learned how to speed read and retain ... and enjoy.)
-
Oh wow that is a lot of books and so cool too! I totally Love the Apollo trials the most right now but I still hold a place for the first books that started it all(Percy Jackson and the Olympians)! Oh you haven't finished The Burning Maze yet? Ok so shouldn't say any more on that then, you will really like the fourth one if you like to see Apollo getting taken down a peg, again it's just so funny also two words for ya Weaponize Unicorns haha! I am waiting anxiously for the next book! The Kane series was really great too, I really like all the hieroglyphics and the weird spells they can do, my sister Loves anything Egyptian lol! My middle girl was running a fever last night, so I actually got in some quiet reading time. Three hours to read 392 pages. :)) Got through a whole paperback for a change.
-
I love paranormal type literature so I'd have to say my favorite series is the Shiver Trilogy books by Maggie Stiefvater! It puts a whole new spin on your "typical werewolves"! And the detail she goes into when describing the characters, location and events really makes you feel like you are in the stories!
