You can buy barns using IV's. Under the tab "Upgrades and Extra's" you'll find "My IV Manager". Click on it and it takes you to the page where you can buy IV's with hbs.
You need to do this by clicking on the "buy IVs" button. There you can write in the box how many IV's you want. One IV costs 12500 hb's, you'll need five to buy the smallest barn of 15 horses. When you click on the "IV Shopping" button you can see what you can buy with IV's and how much is needed.
Ofcourse you can also buy any upgrade to get more stalls, till lvl 3 you can buy with hb's. Lvl 4 and 5 need real money.
And you can buy stables with real money as well.

I actually put money back every month so that I can buy a barn if I need it. Because I ALWAYS need another barn. I stopped buying barns for a bit because I REALLY needed to cut down on my herd. I am trying to stick to that, but I am certain if I don't need one this season, I will next season.
