Not sure if I'll keep this guy as a show horse or what, but he is definitely the lightest liver I've seen yet.

He is super light, @Peachtree. Although prl doesn't normally lighten that much by itself, I wonder if that's what lightened him?

:-? I wondered that as well, as far as the lightening of his tail and the dun markings. It is much more drastic than I'm used to though. My other liver red duns are all a lot darker:

Lighter body but the legs and tail are still very dark.

Good theory @blu, that's the only factor that I can imagine might cause him to look like that :D Thank you for the help!

@Peachtree thank you I've been working hard on these although I've left my other lines hanging lol but I'll pick em up again soon. I got this lovely lady by accident one time and she induced the urge for chocolate Palamino duns =))

@Rutledge Liver/DP fever is rough :)) wow what a unique color! I love how her mane, tail, and legs all have a bit of a pinkish/rosy look, very cool!

What exactly makes a horse a liver?

Three darkening alleles!
There are two darkening genes, sooty and Dense Pheomelanin.
It works differently on red vs black based horses because DP only acts on red pigment, but on chestnuts:
One copy of either makes a chestnut horse a little darker. Two (whether one sooty and one DP, or two sootys, or two DPs) makes a horse significantly darker, like the Dark Chestnut HH. Three (homozygous sooty or DP and heterozygous of the other) makes a horse liver. And four alleles (homozygous sooty and homozygous DP) makes black livers, like my sadly gelded boy above.

Oooo! This reminds me! I seen a post on Facebook about "unique" horse colors and their discrimination for Liver Chestnuts was a dark red horse with a light mane and tail! Every bit of my being was screaming "THATS WRONG!" :))
