Christmas Spirit Questionnare
  • Hi everyone,
All this secret santa cheerfulness and gifting going on makes me really happy in these wintery cold and dark days.
So I want to give something back to the community in good holiday spirit. But I also want to get to know the community here a bit better!

So therefore please answer this question:
Which winter weather is your favourite type: snow, frost, clear starry skies in the morning or none of these?

Please let me know why this is your favourite type. If it is a combination that is also fine! Just let me know why, and who knows, a certain present might come your way!
Please also include your user ID.

For me, my favourite weather is a combination of clear starry skies in the morning (that makes waking up early and in the dark so much more worth it and I love stargazing in general!) and snow later on. I'm from the Netherlands so we have a mild climate and not much snow, but when we do get it I really love how everything is so white and 'clean', as if the world gets a new blank slate to start with. And ofcourse that crispy sound when you walk through the snow!

(Please know I am quite busy with work the coming few days so I'll try to send out the presents as fast as I can, but please do have a bit of patience!)

This will run untill Sunday, december 22nd 3:00 PM EST (game time)!

  • I love when you come out in the mornings during winter and it’s still not quite daytime and the ground and grass and windows are all frosted over and you can see your breath in the air <3 it reminds me of going to school when I was younger

  • I am super lucky to live in an area where we have 4 distinct seasons. As a kid, I totally took this for granted, but now it is awesome to hear what everyone else's climate is like.

To be honest, I really don't like the winter. The kids love the snow, so I appreciate that, we usually get 2-3 good snows a year, but mostly it is just wet and cold. And the cold makes everything so much harder! Frozen buckets and fingers... no riding on frozen ground.. ehh. If I had to pick a favorite winter weather it would be the crisp clear mornings! Not too cold, but getting up early and smelling the clear air - reminds me of horse show season!

My absolute favorite weather - which is weird - is summer morning thunderstorms. It is super common for us to get thunderstorms in the afternoon in the summer, but not in the am. I love waking up to thunder and rain in the morning. I think because it is so rare it makes me feel refreshed.

  • Iam from Australia so Its a hot Christmas for me especially this year with heatwaves and fires everywhere. luckily my area is away from the fires but others are not so blessed.
My favorite winter weather is the awesome Thunder Storms we get with thunder that rattles the windows and lighting that lights up the dark winter night sky followed by the heavy drenching rain.
  • @LCorona001 ah I remember that too! I always biked to school so you'd see all your schoolmates with little puffs of smoke above their heads on their bikes.

@Stony Brook Stables right now we have a very wet but not so cold winter. It is more like autumn actually! Unfortunately I cannot ride horses myself but I can understand the struggle the frost gives.
It is so weird to imagine waking up to thunderstorms! Here in the summer and autumn it is more often going to bed with thunderstorms or in the AM like you haha! What area are you in where that is happening?

@jaclou aah the big down under! I cannot imagine celebrating christmas while it is hot, to me it is so linked with cold weather! I've heard about the fires though, is that something that always happens or has it gotten worse over the past few years?
Love your description of the thunder storms, I can almost feel it :p

Thank you for your answers all! Your gifts have been send :)

  • @jaclou Yea I'm in Aus as well, the smoke came over so thick the air was orange today. reminded me of the breaking bad mexico filters they used :)) Luckily nothing has come closer than 10km from me yet, but saturday will be a record hot day so here's hoping they don't wildly spread even further.

But for the main topic - Again, we have heatwaves and smoke this year, but for winter I love the snow! It doesn't snow the last few places i have lived, but does get frosty. But fresh snow, the crunch crunch when you step into it, soft snowflakes falling slower than rain, amazing! It just adds an air of magical-ness to everything. And at night the colours of the sky/snow on the ground is just so awesome.
If i had to live in it constantly/care for my horses in the icy cold snow I'm sure i'd get over it, but it's very rare i get to see the snow so I love it so much! One day i hope to ride in the snow, they do trails up in the mountains where they filmed The Man From Snowy River.

  • thankyou Master StablesMS for your kind gift.
We get fires every year some years worse then others this year seems worse then normal especially with the heatwave across the country, Thankfully we had a cool change today even got a bit o rain this am . Have a wonderful Christmas hoping to visit my brother in Scotland one Christmas where my family is originally from

  • Thank you for your generosity!
My favorite Christmas/winter weather is when it’s snowing those big fat slow falling snowflakes. I like to call it Christmas snow. The flakes are so big that horses all look like the are carrying my fav ice gene, 13. If it’s sunny to boot, it’s even better because then it’s all glittery too.

  • My absolute favorite is the soft quiet of a snowfall. I love going out to the barn to feed and walking around with snow flakes everywhere. I also love a sunny chilly day immediately after snow. The bright sun on snow and iceicles beginning to form is very pretty to me.

  • Thanks for this, I enjoy learning more about fellow HAJers experiences, too. Prayers for all of you Aussies! I've been following the news about your fires - I hope your country gets some relief from the burning heat soon!

I've spent most of my winters in the Carolinas, where a bipolar Mother Nature decides to stop taking her meds and talking with her therapist at this time of year. :)) It will be close to 80 one day and in the 30's the next! We rarely get snow, and when we do it is usually melted by the next day (or the afternoon). The most consistent winter weather for us tends to be sloppy gray wet days.

My favorite winter days are when it is clear and sunny enough to spend time outdoors. The warm days aren't bad- I have fun memories of skating in my new rollerblades while wearing shorts on Christmas day.

I like frosty mornings with bright starlight skies. The frosty grass crunches beneath your feet and sparkles like diamonds, seeming to reflect the stars above. Exhaling makes you look like a dragon with the puffs of warm air.

My favorite winter weather is cold, overcast days that make you want to stay in and drink (peppermint) hot chocolate. Even better if you have a fireplace! When it’s windy and smells like snow is coming - that’s the cherry on top! :) I live in the southeastern US, so our winters are pretty mild. It’s a treat if it snows!

My favorite is when there is fresh clean powder snow in the morning. It’s like waking up to a surprise and everything is fresh and clean. I live the way it looks on bare tree limbs and on Christmas lights on houses.

  • I love the clear, starry sky with a silver moon over a fresh snowfall when everything is quiet and peaceful and the only sound is the horses moving in their stalls and munching their hay. Winter reminds me of home. Winters where I live now are mild with maybe one or two small snowfalls over the course of the season. I love that it's warmer here, but real winter makes me think of growing up up north--sledding, skiing, ice skating and building snowmen. On "warm" days (meaning not below zero wind chill) we'd all go to the barn and ride in the snow.
  • 238452

Oh man, you guys. It's so strange/interesting to hear about the climates in other places, especially this time of year! I gotta say, most of what you guys think of as winter is closer to 'early fall' up here! I live in Minnesota, and for those of you not from the US (or maybe just the Midwestern US? I'm not actually sure) Minnesnowta has a bit of a reputation. One of the funniest things that seems to happen at least once every year is someone moves up here from farther south and sometime in October or November they say something like "Wow, you guys were serious about the weather up here! I can't believe it's winter already!" and we say "Oh, honey. It's not." The Holly King rules these lands with an icy fist, and Oak King months are short and precious and hard won after a long and tumultuous spring!

Basically the North Wind blows down from the Arctic, through Canada, and then to us. So we're warmer and less ridiculous than farther north in Canada or, like, Russia, but winter is a serious affair. It is currently 18 degrees Fahrenheit (that's about -8 Celsius), which is the warmest reading I've heard all week! It's probably because the sun is actually shining! There usually hits a point were we freeze for the year- the temp drops below freezing and doesn't cross back up til spring- so all our snow just keeps piling up and up and up. The biggest snow piles (spots where everyone is dumping their plowed snow, like on the edges of parking lots) get taller than houses. That freeze point is usually in mid to late November or early December, so we're not very far into it and the snow is only about 8 inches deep. Maybe a foot. (20-30 cm) Not so much yet, and the biggest snow piles are only a little taller than me (and I'm a tiny person). Basically there's a reason that the majority of the population here has some sort of Scandinavian ancestry!

I have always liked winter though; when you grow up with it and you know how to handle it you can manage the rough parts and enjoy the fun parts! I like the soft quiet of a fresh snowfall at night and the untouched canvas the next morning. I like the cozy sweaters and the fireplaces/woodburning stoves and the lights and decorations. I like when the icicles get bigger than small children or even make it all the way to the ground and make ice columns! Back when I still lived on a farm with horses I loved watching them run around the morning after as snowfall, plowing through the fresh powder and kicking up white clouds and bucking and tossing their heads like colts! I think my favorite winter weather, to answer the actual question, though, is a clear sky with a full moon on clean snow. The snow reflects the moonlight, and everything just glows! Even I can see like it's almost daylight, and I'm nightblind. That's probably why I like it so much, lol. It looks like magic should be happening, like magic probably is happening and you just can't see it!

  • I agree that it's neat to hear how everyone's winter is different!
I'm in GA, so... if it even gets cold-cold by Christmas, it's amazing. We had our first "below freezing" night of the year last night, and I was definitely in short sleeves at least one day last week!
I honestly hate snow, but only because neither I nor anyone else in the area has any idea how to drive in it! If I didn't have to worry about that, I would love it (but only to look at - wet & cold is not a combination I'm going to voluntarily put myself in!), I think.
I do really enjoy the foggy mornings we get in the week or two of "fall" weather, but I count it as "winter" since it's usually in late November/early December. :)

  • I love how peaceful and gentle it is when it snows and I really enjoy seeing all of the animals and birds that seem to enjoy it as well. I also love the warm winter days when things aren't too cold and the skys are bright.

  • I like those sunny and 35 days that come after the bitter, bitter cold. It feels like a heatwave, and I can actually go out and enjoy the horses.

    Thank you!

  • @Taliesin your winter weather sounds almost the same as mine in Northern Montana. It’s cold snowy and windy. We often get at least a week of -10 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Sometimes -10 is our heat wave. We haven’t really gotten into our cold weather yet that usually comes in January or February. But its really the wind that gets people it’s always blowing year round, some days the wind is blowing 50mphr. If’s you want to ride anything under 20mph is a good day, anything windier and your horse had better be well broke, because saddling is a challenge when the saddle blanket keeps getting blown off before you can get the saddle on them.

My favorite thing about winter is the nice brisk mornings riding through the snow, plowing through snow drifts. When my mare is all frisky because it’s cold and breezy. That’s really fun. I also love when it first starts to melt and you wake up and hear the drip drip of water melting off your roof and know spring is finally coming.
  • I really like it when is a warmer morning and it had snowed the night before and it's soft and fluffy so you could go outside and make anything with the snow! Snow angels, Snowmen, a little snow fort.....ect and enjoy it! The best part is getting to come in after a day playing in the snow and drinking hot coco(especially love the coco part)! I also love to watch out the window when the snowflakes are big and the snow light, its pretty! Its already very much winter here and its about 20 degrees every day and its snowed a bit too!

If I had to choose a type of weather it would be cloudy and snowing because then the clouds reflect back or hold in what little heat there is. Snow also muffles alot of noises so it's quieter outside. The rest of the time, I'd prefer to stay inside and read a book or crochet by the fire.
  • My favorite winter weather is a warm early morning where the frost is glistening in the morning light all the way up through the mountain trees but it's not cold enough to make you dread coming out of the house to do morning feedings

However today has been nothing like that... It's been better... Feeding this morning, the goat's tub doesn't have a heater so it was frozen solid... I cut the heal of my boot wide open breaking The ice off of the top of the water... Came home from work, just 6.5 hours later and it was frozen solid again :(

  • I grew up in Minnesota, so I had to deal with the 6 foot snowbanks every year. Now I live in the desert, so nights get a bit chilly during the winter, but I'd rather deal with a bit chilly than freeze your nose off snow. Arizona Winters are a nice change.

  • I love clear starry winter skies. I'm not crazy about the bitter Minnesota cold, but adore the celestial phenomena like parhelions and sundogs that accompany it. Even the worst weather here seems to have some kind of payoff.
  • I didn't add my ID above; it's 225674
  • I love slightly over cast days were I can stay home, and drink hot chocolate, and there is a layer of fluffy powdery snow covering everything, those are my most favorite days of winter. Everything is quite and calm and its like you're in your own little winter wonderland world.

  • I live in Ohio, so we have all 4 seasons. Right now we have less than an inch of snow on the ground, but it has a thin layer of ice over it. Last night got down to 7° Fahrenheit, but tonight in the 20's. My favorite part of winter is watching the snow come down at night and wake up to a blanket of fresh, untouched snow across the fields. Walking out to feed the horses and being able to see your breath, and getting to make the first tracks in the new snow. It's cold enough the horses are frisky, but not so cold your face freezes. Growing up on a farm, I used to love being able to run through the fields and create "art" with my footprints. I still have a strong urge to run through a large field to be the first one to make any tracks in it.

  • I live in what is called the Boreal Forest in the Northern part of one the prairie provinces in Canada ... Here we go from eh its chilly (-10C) to omg I can't open my eyes or they will freeze (-45C without the wind ... -56C with it), cold.

My not really favorite, but most memorable, is a night time temp ... cold, mind numbing cold. Where every little sound snaps in the air. The horses all fuzzy munch on their bale while down at their feet the two pet Alpine goats lay in the hay chewing their cud. At this temp nine times out of ten it will be crystal clear, not a cloud in the sky, the twinkling of the stars are only mired by the haze of your breath as you try to breath. This cold does something with the Northern Lights ... first the Lights are clear ... so clear ... their greens dance across the sky in waves that seem endless. But with this there is a sound ... at this temp the Lights snap with each flicker they make ... there is a soft hum and then snap, as the colors dance across the sky. At these temps you don't just get the green, but the hint of blue and red ... not much, just enough to make you stop and look.

  • Wow guys so many responses and so many great descriptions of your experience with winter weather! I love love love reading this!

@SilverCreekFarm that is probably why I love snow so much too, even though I am in Northern Europe because of the mild sea climate it often is rain not snow, so when we do get it (maybe up to two or three times a year nowadays) I am so happy!

@jaclou I'm glad you got some rain, I cannot imagine how scary it must be to know that these all consuming fires are closeby! And Scotland is someplace I'd would like to visit too someday, see the green hills and some nice old castles!

@levesel1 I like that description, those big flakes are the best!

    @Humboldt yay team snow!

@Crowned1 what rollarskating in shorts on Christmas day? :O That really is crazy! Love your description about bipolar mother nature haha, at least she is never boring!

@ChateauAlbere haha I never thought of myself as a dragon, always more of a steam powered train or something, but the next time it is frosty I'll definitely keep that in mind (and maybe let out a little roar too :p).

@FallOutRoyale that's the best part about wet autumn weather and cold wintery weather: to stay indoors with a blanket and a nice hot drink!

@Chesneythecorgi I love that too! Especially if the only tracks in the fresh snow you see are from birds or a few little kitty paws on the table!

@Wide Open Farm I have the same warm winters now! But I feel when I was younger there were more colder winters, just like you I have memories of sleigh riding and ice skating and snowballfights!

@Taliesin I love your description of the kings of minnesota haha! It really has some personality huh?! And wow snow higher than houses? I only see that stuff on social media video's :p I don't know what it is with snow but it always feels magical, from the moment the flakes start falling down up untill the clean white canvasses and even the moment when it starts melting (that's when I always feel like going 'back to the normal world').

@Vella Driving in snow is a bit of a challenge, that is true! Foggy mornings with a nice sunrise are great too!

@Flutterbelle Snow is awesome! And especially if you can walk your dog out in the snow and it turns all white, almost like a living snowman! My old dog used to eat the balls of snow we threw at her, so funny to see!

@paradoxphoenix yep I must say that if there would be constant below zero temperatures I would be happy about a hot day too!

@Silverstar I always have a love-hate relationship with melting snow. As we don't get snow very often I am always bummed to see it go, but like you said, it also means springtime is coming!

@HorseAngel I think coco might be the absolute best thing about the whole winter season! :P

@Dunappy9 Ooh now I want to go sit by a fireplace (we don't have one) with a book (no time to read unfortunately).

@Bambi207 Glittery mountains sound great! I once read that putting in an air filled ball (like a soccer ball or something) in the water tub can prevent it from freezing a bit as the ball bounces and keeps the water moving. Not sure how much or how long it would actually work though!

@buttrflyfreefall how did you move from arizona winter to a desert? :o

@TerreDesAnges yep love that too, looking at the stars in your thick warm wintery coat!

@HelenofTroy Whenever you can stay in and drink choco is a good day!

@TimberRunFarms That feeling of making the first tracks is the best! I always try to keep a part of our garden 'untouched' so I can still enjoy that view of white untouched snow!

@Corvus What -45 / -57 degrees? :O Oh my, that is cold on a whole new level!
And wow that description of the Northern lights! :o I always have wanted to see it once in my life, but now even more so!
I think Ammit should make a new herd helper out of your description :p

@DesertRoseHorses29 I always hope for snow on christmas day too! But it happened maybe once or twice in my entire life! But ey, you might never know!

I'll go sending out the gifts now, it might take a bit as there have been so many responses!

  • @Corvus - I have never heard that the Northern Lights make sound! I'm sure it is magical!
I've only ever been about to see the Northern Lights once (from a boat in the wilds of Lake Superior), but they were only a faint green glow then. I don't envy the cold, but I sure would like to see those dancing lights in their full glory once!

  • My favorite winter weather is a small amount of snow, ideally a heavier type that makes that amazing crunchy/squeaky sound when you walk in it, frost on the trees and plants, and that cold air with a fresh scent that's sometimes tinged with woodsmoke.
My user ID is 260438 but I mostly just wanted to answer this question, it's great!
  • @all who responded ... They are pretty intense, I have actually got a little seasick watching them as they dance ... and it is a dance, the way they interact with each other, then just the ice cold stillness is one that even at that temp you kinda just have to watch. Its the quiet of those temps that really makes the magic of the Lights ... its almost like sound is frozen and then broke loose.
Makes yah kinda wonder what they do further North, where it gets really cold LOL, I'm good where I am though ... Don't think I could take that cold. Here it sometimes gets so cold that plastic will shatter if you just tap it. Watering the horses the water heater has to be raised and hot water needs to go out so the hose doesn't freeze as soon as the water starts to move. When your all done, you grab your blankey, throw in a movie (or a little Hunt Jump for me) and just thaw out, till you have to go again... :D

I don't like the cold, it makes my knee hurt. I do however like the clear crispy air when we do get that.

I do miss the snow from my years spent growing up in Nebraska, but I definitely don't miss the cold.

But for winter, I've never lived anywhere it snowed but I love those clear heavy frost mornings feeding up the horses, the frosty breath, the crunch on the ground, and the ice on the ponies. Then the sun comes up and it all disappears
