The easiest answer for me (because my first language is not English) is to refer to the Wikipedia article. It is a profecy made by a female "seer", a volve. The name Völuspá (Voluspå in modern Norwegian) can be translated literary to something like "The Seer's Profecy", and was probably written around year 900. It begins with the creation of the world, tells the tales of the old norse mythology, and ends with Ragnarok, the end of the world.

The Poem is actually where Tolkien got inspiration to most of the names of the Dwarves in The Hobbit, and even Gandalf is mentioned there as one of the dwarves.
