Eye Color?
  • I was just wondering what gene affects eye color and what the different eye color (blue, amber, brown, etc.) mean in terms of genes or just coloring in general.
  • Amber is champagne
blue is splash or any white near the eyes
brown is dark based horses like bay, black, chestnut ect.
  • I'm going to go with real horses.

Champagne horses are usually born with blue eyes that change to greenish and then amber

Pearl horses, from what I've seen, tend to have a greenish tinged eye

Double cream dilutes will have blue eyes that can also sometimes tend to be more greenish (real horse--Amberfields Desperado, a Morgan. Look him up. He has green eyes and I believe he is either cremello or Perlino)

Brown eyes can vary in hue from light golden brown to deep dark brown. These can be on all other colors not listed above

Sometimes cream dilutes will be born with deep blue eyes that eventually turn to brown. There are also "tiger eyes" in one of the paso breeds that I heard was going to be studied. They are almost yellow-brown in color. Very striking.

Splash and frame both cause blue eyes. There are theories out there that some White spotting KIT mutations can cause blue eyes as well. Personally, I feel that pinto pattern blue eyes look different than double cream dilute blue eyes.
