A Tough Time
-
I don't typically reach out when I'm going through tough times, mostly because my life has been chaos central since minute one, but I've seen the benefit of doing so here. I will insert a trigger warning as I realize I'm fairly desensitized by my work and I don't wish at all for anyone to be blindsided.
TRIGGER WARNING (TW): human remains, child abduction/endangerment
So to start off, I work with dogs. It's as simple as that but sometimes a little more complicated and was something that I started throwing myself into when I was a teenager. I'm really good with most animals but dogs, at the time, seemed easier to put on a business card than 'animal trainer.' I've studied dog psychology, multitudes of training methods, read up on just about every job the dog has been bred to do, and took a ton of classes. It was like learning a new language. I found that my unique background made me adept at resolving issues with 'problem' dogs, which in turn forged connections/mentors and furthered my education.
So far I've worked with; police, military, private sector, search and rescue (SAR), therapy/service dog programs and individuals in all kinds of jobs from human remains detection (HRD) and almost all other types of detection (explosives, drug, endangered animals, currency, etc) to protection to oh my goodness just about everything lol. And yes, there are a lot of acronyms :-)) . Nearly all of it has been in the capacity of; dog develops problem --> usual training methods can't fix problem --> owner/handler/organization approaches me for evaluation. At the start, I would approach people who were looking for assistance with shelter/rescue dogs and I still do this when I can. I worked mostly in Virginia, then got an amazing opportunity to work in Alaska(my favourite), then North Carolina, and now Florida. I'm not sure where I'll go next. I took an interest in SAR while in Alaska, got to go on a month long training 'retreat' in Denali National Park, and although I have no formal training, I've been privileged to help with some SAR groups on tasks.
All of that is to explain how I got where I am and my current struggle. I won't be very specific on times/dates/details to preserve anonymity of victims/individuals. There had been a call about a family member with known mental health issues wandering away from the house and they were found four days later dead due to falling on slippery rocks. Another, a parent, said they had last seen their child around midnight and woke up to them missing. The parent later was arrested after inconsistencies in their story surfaced and refusal to cooperate. I wasn't part of the team that eventually found the child's remains as they brought on more resources after the trail crossed state lines but assisted with the early stages. They weren't sure the remains were the child but DNA evidence proved that it was. I'm utterly exhausted and numb.
I've been scrolling through the search page looking at S+ beauties to cheer me up. Did you know there are over 200k color tested horses with S+? Do you have a favourite S+ horse? Post below.I breed Drafts and star horses :D

Wow your job sounds so interesting! That's a lot of heavy stuff to deal with though, do you find the dogs help you get through that as well as doing their dog jobs? They are such amazing animals <3<br />
Just did a search of my own horses and turns out 4156 of them (out of a total 8776) have s+ haha!
Here's a brown watercolor with s+, who only got one shade all over

@SilverCreekFarm It sounds cliche but it's rewarding for me to help people understand their dogs better. Oh, they definitely do! The bond a lot of the handlers form with their partners is pretty strong. Aw, a Pedro baby! ❤️
@Taliesin The dapples on Key! Thank you, now I need an S+ DP Mushroom line. ^:)^
@bluchrystals There's never enough S+ :x Uhm so Vertigo looks like she has a starry sunrise as her coat!

@Alianne - Thank for doing what you do! I know it is tough work, but you and the dogs your work with are so important. I've been a nurse for over 15yrs, so I understand how it is easy to bury your own emotions so that you can get the tough job done - it is really important to take care of yourself, too! Kudos to you for sharing your story- I've found that just talking about the hard things can really help me process them.
I don't have any s+ beauties to show you - collecting some of them is becoming a goal of mine (I've only been here a few months). However, your story made me think of a recent event I was honored to attend - a retirement ceremony for a Military Working Dog (MWD). You probably already know this, but MWD's are full-blown members of the military and earn awards and honors just like their human counterparts. The dog that was retiring had his biography and accomplishments shared during the ceremony, was given a "final bite" with one of his trainers (this dog was trained to take down "bad guys" on command), and received a special bone as a thank-you for his service. Most touching was the ceremonial leash hand-off to his new family that will love him for the rest of his days. After the ceremony, everyone who attended was invited to give the MWD a small treat and a pat as a thank you for his invaluable service. It was such a cool thing to experience and make me thankful for the hard working brave dogs that do so much to protect us!
