Question about lines and breeding evenly
-
So Ive been playing for about 3 weeks so I'm pretty new! Ive done tons of research and reading on here along with lots of help from a few players. I know I'm supposed to breed evenly. And I understand why. However Ive seen stallion ads and things that say "fully lined" and things like that.
Ive been getting the impression that once horses are a certain higher generation you dont have to exactly breed evenly as long as the other horse is also higher generations. Am I totally interpreting this wrong? lol
And if I am on the right track with this when is a horse considered fully lined?
How does it work?
Another question is I'm aware one of the big game concepts is to breed for great show horses and to have a pretty decent show string of geldings and spayed mares so they can be your income and eventually will pay for your breeding and testing. I was wondering about how long it takes to get enough altered horses that show (along with the rest of my horses I show everyone) And about how many horses you need to have showing to make a decent amount of money for your show bonus every week. I know its a pretty loaded question lol. I'm just about broke and now that the sale is over I cant go stock up lol
Thanks in advance!

It depends on the player when they settle for just terming a horse "fully lined," I guess. When I first started playing, four years ago, it was frequently considered the term for any horse whose pedigree went past the three pictured generations on the Family tab, in other words horses who were more than 4th generation. As the years have gone by, especially since Ammit called for a culling of very long pedigreed horses and started the Era system, quite a few players have started lines from foundations and have been building their stables up from that, keeping accurate counts of the generations beyond the 4th and breeding evenly through much higher generations. I personally have tattoos up through even 5th generation, but my breeding is fairly sporadic (too many horses and too little time) so I haven't gone beyond that yet. I still haven't found time and energy to weed all the even 4th gens out of my Long Pedigree tattoo collection, which was originally named 4th gen +. I hope other players will come into the discussion and give you their viewpoints on your first set of questions.
As for when the showing bonus becomes large enough to sustain a stable, I would say it's probably when you have between 1000 and 2000 horses with a decent amount of points. I will start a new reply with the record I kept in my HaJ 2 account when the showing bonus system was a few months old. -
My report to Ammit about the success of the showing bonus, with Auto-Shower showing every horse (except those in the primary barn and any barns marked as non-showint) twice a week.
As you can see I began this record in mid-August, the year was 2014. I didn't record how many horses were being shown, but you can tell from the number of points that there must have been quite a few. Up until Ammit worked out the showing bonus system, I had only shown my HaJ2 horses sporadically. I think the changes were made in late June or early July of that year.

Answer #1: I don't think there is a specific magic cut-off point for when a horse is considered fully lined. You could argue that a 'full pedigree' is only 4 generations, the only thing you can see on the family tab, but there's a world of difference between a 4th generation horse and say... a 10th generation horse if the people breeding them have been paying attention to quality the whole time.
I think the biggest overall considerations are quality and aesthetics. The quality thing is a big one, for the reason I just mentioned, though it's less of a big deal to breed, say, a 7th generation mare to a 6th generation stallion. (In fact for a while I had to do that because I didn't have any 7th generation studs, at all... couldn't get any that were high enough quality, because the mares were lagging a generation or two behind. But that's a different conversation.)
Aesthetically a lot of people don't like how it looks when one half of a pedigree is much shorter than another, when there's a huge blank spot because either the sire line or dam line is significantly longer. For the above reason, that can hint at quality issues, too.
Answer #2: How do you define a decent amount of money? Your weekly income is half the total of your accumulated showing points, so if you want an income of, say, 10,000 hbs per week you need 20,000 points. It can definitely take a while to collect that many points, but it gets easier with more horses. More horses = more points = more money.
I can't say I have any idea how long it takes to breed and otherwise collect that many points though. If I had to guess, I'd estimate several RL months, maybe 6 minimum to see 'decent' profit. H&J has always required a 'long game' perspective though!
What I can say is that you should always be looking for ways to ADD to your show string. Especially now that it's breeding season. People dump yearlings left and right to make room for... other yearlings? and you can buy them for dirt cheap, often create price through the auction, sometimes even cheaper on the sales board.
A good goal would be to buy a barn every breeding season and fill it up with horses you plan to show. (They can also be breeding stock, but the problem with breeding stock is they multiply somewhat exponentially, whereas show horses just need the one stall for their whole lifetime...)
Does that help at all? :D -
I keep track forever myself.
It varies from person to person. -
Thank you all so much for explaining and for the tips
The main reason I was asking about the fully lined thing is I thought that maybe there was a certain generation where they were "fully lined" and you could breed other "fully lined" horses to them even if they werent from the same generation. There are a lot of really nice stallions I'd like to breed to but I cant find a mare that is the exact generation.
I'll just keep breeding evenly and keep track forever myself lol
And if I do find a stallion that I really want to breed to I'll just have to message the owner and see what they would want me to do.
