Any "safe" space heaters out there?
-
The heat malfunctioned again and the landlord is being cheap and won't fix it. We have central AC and heat. He says the part is $800 and that the unit isn't old enough for him to replace the whole thing. We've been having issues with heat in the winter 3 years now ever since the unit malfunctioned. AC works just fine.
However, he gave us a space heater but I don't trust it because we live in a mobile home. I'm not that stupid. He told me to put the heater on top of a dresser when I told him that the space heater was not baby proof. I was trying to get him to actually fix the heat on account of my 16 month old daughter. Sheesh!!! I don't think he understands just how dangerous space heaters are in mobile houses. Too bad we don't live in the northern states where there are laws protecting renters when it comes to heat.
So... are there any "safe" space heaters out there? I doubt it, but I don't know what other options I have in Florida.

There has to be a local or state agency you can contact on this. I'm not sure where to start looking for such a thing, but calling either the local Health Dept. or the local Fire Dept. should give you a good start.
We've got a couple of space heaters we use in our trailer when we don't want to turn the full heat on(so far, it's not even been cold enough to turn our normal heat on!), but we also don't have a kid and I wouldn't trust a kid around one. The dog and cat leave them alone. The infrared heaters are supposed to be pretty safe, but again....I'm really nervous about kids and heat sources! -
I wouldn't trust a toddler around any heater. But if you have to have one, I recommend this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TTSXNI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
I bought it a few months ago, and right now, MY heat doesn't work so it's keeping my whole apartment warm. (And sadly, doing a better job than the real HVAC system ever did.) It has a tip off switch, overheating switch, and a cool-to-the-touch case. The front does get warm, but not hot enough to blister your hand at a single touch. Hot enough you don't want to leave your hand on it for sure, but not hot enough to do instant damage. I think it's about as "kid safe" as a heater could be, and while I imagine the kid could pull it over, at least it wouldn't start a fire or scorch the kid if she did.
The fact it rotates makes it very good at covering an area, if you have a tight space, you can turn the rotation off and it'll wedge nicely in a space a half a foot across.
I think my apartment is around 900 square feet, and it's done a perfect job
The one warning I'd give is that you need to let it "burn off" whatever the heck they coat it with at the factory. It'll stink up a storm at first. I set it out on the porch and let it run for a day or so at first, got rid of the stink.
As to legal repercussions... start here: http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/states/florida/renting/tenantrights

We have a space heater thats super safe. I'm pretty sure we got it at walmart its one of the ceramic ones. you can set a timer. it has a high and a low setting. it works really well. its probably like two feet tall. and we've had it for a year now and no problems at all. it doesnt ever get too hot. it wouldnt burn a baby if they touched it
-
Thanks, Gael for the recommendation. It does look much safer than what we have. I am checking into the other link and seeing what recourse I have. I do know that legally, I can't be evicted for complaining.
-
Just remember to set it outside or in a garage or something for a while first, I'm not kidding about that initial stink. It's horrid. Leave it on high for a while, let it get rid of that, then bring it in.
If you have it inside while it's getting rid of that coating, you'll end up opening a window to de-stink the house. -
We live in a northern state, in an old house with crappy insulation, and my favorite space heater is like this one: http://www.amazon.com/DeLonghi-EW7707CB-Safeheat-ComforTemp-Oil-Filled/dp/B002PLQ4T8/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1452642869&sr=1-1&keywords=portable+radiator+oil-filled but not actually that one. (I think my husband picked the one we have up at Home Depot or something.) It's very heavy, very stable, and while it does get warm to the touch, enough to discourage playing with while it's on, but definitely not burn-hot. My two year old pretty much leaves it alone, except to occasionally push the buttons on the front to turn it on or off (mostly off.) He's less interested in it than in the electronic blower-style which has more buttons that glow, anyway.
(Arguably NO space heater is 100% child-proof, but you gotta do what you gotta do.) -
We have an older house with heat and a great fireplace, but a funky layout (four additions = lots of corners). It's hard to heat our house and keep it warm without turning the thermostat up higher than I'd like and overheating that section of the house.
So, we have a ceramic space heater that we use at night and it works fantastic in our bedroom (which is around 300 sqft, so a pretty good size). It works so well that I actually want it OFF in the morning. During the day, I put it in our 2-1/2yr old's room for when he is playing, to keep the chill off.
I feel it's safe around small children, it doesn't get too hot to the touch and heats well. Ceramic heaters are known too be much safer than traditional space heaters, so I'd look into going that route.
This is the one we have, though it is red and black. We bought ours at Wal-Mart and for less than this, so you may be able to find it somewhere cheaper.

Just to update things a bit.
The landlord didn't factor in the big gun, as in his own mother lol. She was out here at the property when we returned from Home Depot where we had gone to see if they had what we wanted in stock. They were out of stock, btw. She said she would see what she could do about getting the heat fixed. It helps that she absolutely adores my daughter too. So we ordered off Amazon what we wanted - what Gael recommended, since it seemed rather safe for a toddler - automatic shut off if tipped over. Boyfriend has Prime, so we'll be able to get it delivered by the end of this week. -
Never a bad idea to have one on hand, even if they do get the heat fixed this time.
But please remember to turn it on outside first if at all possible so it can burn off whatever it is it needs to. :) -
I don't have kids, but I have used an infrared heater for my main source of heat for the last 6, 7 years. I don't remember the brand name, but it's very similar to this one. Cool to the touch, has a tip over switch. I can't stand the smell and feel of central heating. Or car heating either lol. But I love the infrared.Bluegrass #143376 * Specializing in Iced Axiom (ExPro Cobs) and Iced Phantoms (PF Riding Ponies)

What stink? We turned it on and there wasn't one that was noticeable. We both have very sensitive noses. However, thanks for the heads up, it was nice to be forewarned. It took only 2 hours for the space heater to bring the house up to a comfortable temperature. Our house is like 1,300 sq ft or thereabouts.
The HVAC is in the process of being repaired. However, there's one issue that will be very tricky to deal with. For now, they were able to repair it enough that if the house is at least 60, the heat will kick on and work. If the house is below 60, it won't work.
The tricky issue is that there's 2 broken parts. One part, they can replace. The other part can't be replaced currently because it's a special value that isn't being manufactured anymore. If it is to be replaced, they'll have to have that part machined or scourge up the part somewhere from an old unit that has a good one. -
If you find a space heater for, say a workshop or garage, they have ones that you can hang on the wall, up high, away from little hands. We use them in our rabbit barns, and bunnies will escape every now and again, so having them up high has been such a blessing.

Ah...maybe mine just had some residue on it that shouldn't have been there then. :)
It sounds like it's working out for you, glad to hear it! :)
