Sell or Keep? 18yr Olds
-
Do you sell or keep your 18-year-olds (or older) that might die off at rollover?
I have a bunch that could pass away at rollover but was wondering if I should get 2500 at auction for them or if I should keep them just incase they don't pass away and those points go towards my payout for another month (I have at least 2 1200+ point show horses that could pass away, a total of about 4k points lost if they all pass)
Thanks! Any other info about show horses greatly appreciated too! I just got over 7k this month, but I feel like I'm going back down to 6k after rollover which is where I've been stuck at for ages :(( -
I would use the search and pick up as many pointed show horses as you can and go through your herd and sell off all the levelled off show horses that are 10+ years that have less points.

Also check out the auctions.
On my one account I used to sell off as many of my leveled off horses as it took to match the new horses income. After a while that cleared out a bit of space in my show barn and I would just go an fill it back up with more pointed foundations (the younger the better but they can be more expensive)Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1kgstable -
I have a couple that have "earned" their right to be kept until they die of old age... but I fully confess to being overly sentimental and pack bonding with almost everything. I've been running into major space issues, so I'm working on getting a stiffer spine when culling. I have a few 17+ that I keep because they are showing at the top of their grand prix classes (ironically...some of them are @Bandit1119's...) and therefore earn their keep, but for the most part, 18+ get tossed in the auction, and I replace with younger pointed show stock using Bandit's methods described above.."Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving." - PTerry Pratchett

Unless I'm attached, my 17year olds get auctioned off at the end of the season before rolloverThanked by 1kgstable

Thank you everybody! All that info is super helpful for a newer show barn like myself. I think I'll sell off my non-sentimental 18+ year olds and replace the, :) Thanks!

I particularly get rid of any show horse at 10 years of age if they dont have a good pay out. Like i just auctioned off 10 year olds that had 10,000 or less in payout. If they are a bit over the 10,000 mark then i will keep them till theyre pay drops under 10,000 theyre gone. Youll find doing this will make room for really good show horses. I have some 8 year olds paying out at 15,000 which proves to me they are earning more points than the average. I always grade by there age. A 5 year old best at least have 5,000 points otherwise its going up for sale.Thanked by 1kgstable
