Deciding what you want to breed?
  • sooo I get that stats wise you want your horses to improve, and you do a body type you like and colors you like...but how do you - personally - decide what you want your project to be? I figure some people are "collect them all" types and some are pickier. Do you experiment until you find a cool combo? or breed a particular project for your ideal foal? do you ever stop a project?

Right now I have my horses roughly divided into "show breeders" and "color breeders." I ended up with a handful of specials involving my favorite things - loud white, cream, and roan! I created two shades of pale stallions in case I don't make a stallion to breed to my colored mares (white wedding, catch a blue moon, all washed up). I'm figuring I'll see where combining my favorite colors takes me - and it's somewhat focused, I like black bases, though I've got a cremello in there from the all washed up create. My show breeders are a few exceptionally perfect's that are also colored, and they're Era 7, with good papers so I'm thinking they could be good for breeding to show. I haven't made any exceptionals that I want to mix into my colored line unfortunately, lol. Maybe I'll gene mod somebody, but i kind of wanna "breed up" rn.

anyway, what are your projects like? any advice for a newbie?
  • Your show horses are the money makers. Mak sure to keep a lot more spayed mares/geldings than intact horses and show them. As they earn points, they are increasing their daily payout.

As for what to breed, I initially was attracted to what I like in real life...sooty palominos. So i decided to breed for DP and Creme. And then I slowly fell in love with some fantasy genes, so I added in Watercolor, Onyx, Plaid, Nacre.

I am strict when it comes to my foals. I geld spay anything that didn't carry the genes I wanted. All colts must be superior and now with mare comparison, I am slowly getting all mares superior.

  • I like all the things so narrowing down what I wanted to breed was hard. I actually started with the warmblood body but made a few riding horses then slowly decided I like them better. I started phasing out Warmblood.

Initially, I went with whatever horses passed BA from whatever herd helper I used that day. My first two stallions where a palomino and a black splash Appy. As I bred them to the mares I collected, I discovered I loved to breed appies. That became my main line.

I’ve added and subtracted other interested along the way in a similar way. “Oh that’s cool. I’ll see how I like breeding that.”
  • It’s basically a lot of trial and error until you get a foal that makes you say, “Wow, I want more of those.” OR you can be like me and jump into a bunch of new lines and once and then get overwhelmed, and end up not using some of the horses you’ve GMTd :))

  • What FallOutRoyale says!

I have divided my barn in 2 lines.

The oldest line is my High PT-breeders. They breed my show horses, and are quite plain looking (mostly perlinos with silver, splash and tobiano), but they breed my base source of income.

My 2nd line is my fun line. I don't have time to keep track of 14 different lines as other players do, so in this line I just throw in all the genes I like, and breed them together, and decide who stays intact based on paper level and Marie Condo-principe: does this horse spark joy?

My joy with this line is to see all the different colour and pattern combination that can occur, and some that I never imagined/would have breed together otherwise.
And sometimes I get a foal that really makes me go WOW!!! And then I try to breed more like this, until I get another foal with a (maybe different) WOW-factor etc.
  • I pick my stallions and then fill the pasture with random mares at the same paper level. I tried sorting and matching by colors. It took way too long with as many horses as I have. Now it's a toss up and I get awesome color combos I would not have thought to mix.
  • I do a little bit of both! I have (on the other server) liver and black liver horses, and I toss in the various white markings and then breed them all to see what I get. Right now I'm really loving my Sty+ Black Liver W10s. Next week it might be my regular liver W3s. Either way there is plenty to work with while staying within the 'Liver" boundries I've set for myself.

On this server, I play around with the fantasy genes (when I have time). I have watercolor and nacre that I like a lot, but it's been a while since I had the time to really look them over.

  • I've love silver's and tobianos in real life, so it was an easy choice for me when I started! I've since expanded that to the livers and all the fantasy genes! I just breed all the pretty ponies lol! But yeh at the start I kept it fairly simple

  • thank you so much for your input guys!! now I feel like I'm not appreciating the red based pons X_X something for me to think about anyway lol...sooty on cream is one of my favorite combos, I'm a big akhal teke lover. but it couldn't hurt to throw in other colors for fun...
  • I’ve done black based horses, liver chestnuts, chocolate palominos, bootstrap, fantasy, and Bay’s with bling. For me it’s mostly just modifying what I like and finding something I won’t get bored with. I have two accounts this one, and one on the other server. This one focuses on Bilgy Bays, with DP, S+, satin, KitM and anything else pretty. The other one has black based horses with KitM, KP, Chinchilla, SplashM, and a few other things. I pretty much got bored with all the other lines after a couple months. So I try to focus on goals that are difficult to achieve and make pretty results. But that’s the fun of this game it’s your barn you breed the horses you want.

  • I spend most of my time on the other server with my big barn, but I have been running my tiny greys project over here almost as long. It doesn't get as much attention, but I've been very pleased with the results I have been getting so far. Only open genes I've created myself, ever shrinking with improving quality. I tried buying a few mares, but they threw off my curve.

On Forest I have 3 lines. My wild bays, my bootstrap, and the even lines I throw genes at just to see what pops up down the line. Each has its own set of parameters for culling.
