What should I do next
-
I'm trying to improve the quality of my lines. For the first time I'm using comparison testing- not just in this season's foals but I'm going back several seasons. I am in desperate need of funds since this is so expensive so I need advice on those testing as good as their sire/dam. Do I
A) snip and put in my show barn?
B) Hold on to them eternally hoping they'll sell?
C) put them in auction AND IF SO, intact or snipped?
Thanks! list of animals for sale hereLicensed in chinchilla, mushroom & splash M -
If they are young, I show them. If they are older and probably won't have time to bring enough profit then I sell or auction them as spelds. I use the fantasy sell back a lot.
I try not to sell intacts that are not superior as I want my lines to be constantly improving.Thanked by 1Chesneythecorgi -
If I cull mares, and they're too old to turn into show horses, I just yum them. If I get intacts that are not superior, they get spelded.Thanked by 1Chesneythecorgi

I do Option A. With a side of C.
My barn is huge and ridiculously self sufficient and was overflowing all the time. So I’ve been really working on reducing the show herd so my culling now includes lots of auctioning off of snipped foals.
It took me a really long time but now all of my intact mares and stallions are all comparison tested superior. After mare comp testing came out I started with pulling up a search and starting with the oldest age bracket of mares I worked my way through each age. This way I didn’t have to worry about double testing any and if it took several months (and it did because I had about 1,300-1,500 mares to test) I wouldn’t have to keep track of which how old the tested mares were in the middle of untested mares.
Now when I go through my foals I do SBA move the snipped ones to an auction barn.
Test PT the remaining foals and snip the inconsistent ones and move them to the auction barn.
Then I gene test the remainder. Snip any non grullos (getting less and less to snip though because of some tightening up of genetic requirements to reduce the colour crop outs) These snipped foals and any others snipped later on head to the show barns.
Then I will do breeding inspections and then I work my way through all of my stallions and open a search to compare their intact foals. Lower paper levels all get snipped unless there’s a super special reason (only a few exceptions) I comparison test all the intact foals and snip any not superior.
The mares get prefixes and sorted into their generations barn. The studs get prefixes and thinned out more for various nit picky reasons that vary day to day but aim for 3 or less intact foals (again some exceptions)Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1Chesneythecorgi -
Also I sent you a little something to help with the testing costs :)>-Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1Chesneythecorgi

Here’s what I do:
If they’re below 10 PT, I snip and put in auction.
If they are 10 PT and above, and I like them, I snip and show.
If I’m in a space cleaning mood, and/or they are older and have negligible points, they all get snipped and put in auction.
I personally don’t tend to sell anything intact that I wouldn’t use myself. So if it doesn’t meet my standards, it gets the snip. If it meets my standards, but I don’t need it, I may try to sell intact.Thanked by 1Chesneythecorgi -
wow thank you so much Bandit! So generous of you, I really appreciate it!
Thank you all, I will take these guidelines to heart!Licensed in chinchilla, mushroom & splash M -
The resolution I've come up with is to comparison test all my gen 2's and beyond of both sexes. Only keep superior to sire/dam.
Those that are as good as get performance tested. If 10 or over, get snipped and moved to show barn. If under 10, get put in auction. After Tuesday my hbs will be in quite a nice place though I think my daily payout will take a hit. I'm saving to boost two guys and a GMT foundation stud project. I think the hardest to enforce this on will be my mushrooms :(

My new cull criteria is super simple:
Keep everything as foals and show
Auction everything 10 or older that has less than 500 points
Auction everything 15 or older that has less than 1000 pointsBluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755
