Should I breed?
  • Should I breed this mare? I know she is inconsistent, which is why I hesitate.

    What do you all think?

I am currently working on developing my own line :) I'm not very far yet, but I'm getting there!
  • I don't see why not. I don't even test foundations for consistence. Only the foals :)

  • She doesn't have anything special so I personally would not breed her. Inconsistent horses are a lot harder to show effectively (although they can make good money) and she would be more likely to have inconsistent foals than a consistent mare. There is some randomness in determining the consistency of foals, so consistent parents can produce inconsistent offspring and vice versa, but it seems to be partially inherited.

If you want a grullo mare that is a guaranteed decent broodmare, try the Foundation Rescue (search for horses with owner 13). The Rescue chooses foundation horses with 100% breeding ability, 9.9 PT and perfect consistency from the horse no one bids on in the Public Auction. You can use the tattoo box to limit the search, if you don't feel like paging through several thousand horses to find the color you want.

  • you could always find her a consistent stallion too, so that you have that on your side as well :)
  • I didn't know there was a foundie rescue!
I think I will take my chances and breed her to a consistent stallion.

  • So, I bred her to a A papered consistent stallion, and the filly was consistent! Yay! \:D/
