Auctioning older horses
-
I'm aware that the auction house pays a large sum if you auction a 10 year old horse. Does it still give you a lump sum payoff if the horse is older, but maybe "depreciated" for the lower future earnings potential? Asking for a friend. He's in my barn begging me not to give him up just yet :D

If they are 10 or older they sell at auction for their lifetime payout. You can find that number on the horse's main page right by where it lists their daily payout. Yes as they age, that number should decrease, I believe. I hope that answers the question and makes sense.ID# 260926 Magnum Riding Horses

Yes thanks. That's what I was thinking but I wasn't totally sure so thanks for confirming :)

But, in your friend's favor - you don't lose any total value if you hang onto him, it's just paid in installment instead of a lump sum. Also, if he's showing well and gaining points (especially if he leveled off in a high-value class), he may even make you more over the long run. Also, each time he survives rollover past his soonest potential death-season, that's a bit more that you'll get long-term than if you lump-summed him.
If, on the other hand, he leveled off and isn't earning points... well, other'n the rollover gamble, he won't make you much extra if you keep him, so sorry friend, you gotta go to free up a stall space. :-?ID 252592 | Breeding chaos -
He doesn't show very well but I'm fairly new and I bought him and he has a high PT so I can use him to make show horses with a much better PT than I could otherwise. I think I'm going to keep him for another season to get more show horse babies. He's star papered so really none of the foals are intact but 11.5 or so PT in foals is so much better than I can make with foundation horses :)Post edited by pinkie at 2020-04-14 03:58:07

Ah he's a stallion! Yep definitely keep him and produce nice little show ponies.
Also if you want to keep some of his foals intact for a show herd, just don't run Breeding Advice on them & turn off testing so you don't accidentally run it later. -
And if you get any fillies with an 11PT, I would even recommend not putting them through SBA. Keep them as untested and "bootleg," and breed them to another high PT stallion. And just keep repeating until you have a devent set of high PT foals :)

Oh those are good ideas. I hadn't thought to just not test them. Doh I'm so glad I asked!

You make more money per horse by keeping them, but potentially more money overall by selling after 10 because you can move through twice as many horses.Need to contact me? Read this first.
