Sorting out stallions
-
I currently own over 200 stallions "not including my foundations " and they are over taking my barns for my upcomming foals.
My goal is to down size to about 50 lined stallions . I have been deciding which approach is the best options to clear the unneeded ones out quickly. Theres alot of plain and super cute ones and some that aquired alot of points but havent reached 10 years yet. I plan on auctioning off ones with little to no points. Possibly open up another show barn and geld some of them. And for the rest that i think i could sell put up for sale and see if they sell. Im also concidering gifting away some of the nicer ones to newer members that are looking for a certain color and a good show bonus to help them out.
What would or what have you done in this situation? -
Comparison test against their sires, then compare studs from the same sire against each other. Geld anything 'as good as' or 'worse than'.
From there, If I couldn't open another barn I would sell off the oldest/lowest pointed gelded first (unless I was super attached to a specific colour).
Hope that helps! :)HJ1: 266615

Yup, comparison test. I only keep superior colts. I also only keep studs that got all the genes that I want from the cross. If they missed DP or Sb or something else, they get snipped. I geld so much.

I geld everything under a 10.7PT score and everything that's papers under a B ; then I go through and see which ones I like best ; and comp test them. and Yes like Humboldt ; I geld probably close to 90% of my boys ; you only need 1 for every 50 mares and the past couple of months have been colts almost 3 to 1 over fillies
-
I generally keep 3 boys per 100 mare pasture but I also like having some diversity in my bloodlines, so I keep a roster of 9 stallions for each 100 mare pasture and rotate through them. My pastures are generation specific, though, so I have like a max number of 18 boys per generation for roster purposes.
I comp test all the colts, and if there's more than 1 colt that test superior, I comp test the boys against each other.Post edited by Forestshadow at 2020-05-22 12:44:24 -
I'll keep following this as lots of good info for when I get to my next gen. :)HJ1: 266615

What do you find is the best approach if you can't afford to comparison test all horses? Just go with a PT and paper benchmark, or is it possible to cut down more on top of that? (I also wound up with a ton of colts this season and definitely can't test them all!)ID #265959 | He/him | Breeding Black Satin, Liver, and Grullo Arcturus Horses | Licenses: Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Axiom Blue and Green

Only test the ones you "THINK" you like the best ; or if you have the barn space ; let them grow up til they are 2 to see how they do and what they look like

Sorry I’m a little late, but I would be happy to go through your stallions to see if any of them are genetically similar. That could help free up some space!I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

Thanks, I appreciate the offer! I actually managed to cut out more than I thought I would through PT and breeding scores so it is looking mostly ok, but I would be happy to hear more about what you mean by genetic similarityID #265959 | He/him | Breeding Black Satin, Liver, and Grullo Arcturus Horses | Licenses: Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Axiom Blue and Green

Im still trying to sort them all out. I seem to be attached to the ones i have kept. I cleaned out alot of my new colts but the older ones are slowly being weeded out. I even decided to auction off my older proven producers just to make room for the new generations. I am currently breeding up to gen 5 lined horses and the stallions that i kept from each gen are adding up. Im attempting the rotate idea where once a stallions been in pasture for a couple seasons im turning in a newer stallion to take its place and actioning or selling off the older one. :-)) one year i attempted to gmt all my colts into mares that had high pt scores and looked cute. I probably wont try that again till im further in generations and trying to get a higher pt mark on my star/gold horses.
