Contest: Your Favourite Brew (Winner announced!)
  • Ai, ai, ai! By Merlin's beard!

It seems like the wizard left their cauldron unattended before he went on a long well-deserved holiday, and of course one of his apprentices found it!

Foals are foals, and the burning curiosity won over common sense, and now the curse have completely hidden her true looks! Oh, what will the other foals say? What about prom night? Will she ever get her beauty back? And worse, what will the Wizard say (or do!!!) when he comes back?

We better get started to find a brew that may end the curse before the Wizard comes back. Maybe he will turn her into a frog as a punishment? Or worse - have her expelled!

    The Sorcerers Apprentice

There is only one thing to do: share your recipes for your favourite brews for all seasons, so that we can find a draft or a potion to help her out of the mess she created.

Post your favourite recipes for something you like to drink. It can be anything from cold lemonade to how to brew your best cup of tea or coffee, or something completely different.

The winner will win the horse, so they can remove the curse and reveal her true beauty. She carries genes worth several hundreds of IVs, so she will be a great addition to any barn. She have no restricted genes, so everyone can participate.

The contest will end on game rollover between June 6 and 7, the day before the Wizard is back from his holiday.

The winner will be chosen by a random number generator, the entries will be numbered in the order they are posted.
Only posts containing a recipe will count towards the numbering.
Feel free to share as many recipes as you want to! But only the first post pr participant will count towards the prize.

    Good luck everyone!

  • I'm British - so it has to be tea! And for me, Builder's Tea, which means that it has to be strong, and if it doesn't shrivel the back of your tongue it's not worth drinking! ~O)

I use a teapot. As soon as the water has boiled I pour a little into the teapot, put the lid on and swirl the water around to warm the pot. Tip the water out, take the lid off and put in loose tea - one teaspoon per person and one for the pot. That's usually three teaspoons for me because most of the time I'm making it for me and my husband. Pour in however much hot water you need for the amount of tea you will be drinking. Put the teacosy on the pot (I knit my own) to keep the heat in. Leave for around 5 minutes. Pour a small amount of milk into the cups (milk in first so you can gauge the strength of the tea by the colour). Pour the tea through a strainer to catch the tea leaves. Pour the first cup for the person who likes it less strong, as you get to the bottom of the pot the tea will be stronger. And there you have it - a perfect cup of British tea (although a mug is better).

  • I also prefer tea (citrus lavender to be exact). I don’t make it myself though. Just take a mug of water, microwave it, and put the tea bag in for 5 to 10 minutes, based on how strong you want it. Then, viola! Tea! ~O)

  • One of my favorite hot drinks is Golden Milk. You take some turmeric paste (turmeric, oil, and black pepper cooked together), some cinnamon, milk, and maple syrup, put it in a pan and bring it to a simmer. Then you curl up with a blanket and good book and enjoy that liquid gold :x

  • I' ve really been experimenting with my herb gardens this spring ; and came across this lovely tea recipe that helps with nerves and exhaustion as well as " hiney and tummy burps "

Infuse 1 teaspoon dried, bruised Lavender flowers in 1 cup boiling water ; cover and " cozy" for 15 minutes ; strain and add up to 1 tsp honey for sweetness ; drink a cup a day :)

( lavender can also help with headaches )

  • This is so fun @herzeloyde! I hope the wizard has a fantastic holiday! :)

Every fall, my mom makes a huge container of her instant hot coco mix. It is so much better than the store-bought packets! With our family numbering 18 people now (my siblings, our spouses, and the ever-growing herd of kids), this easy-to-make beverage mix doesn't last long! This also make a great present for teachers, neighbors, coworkers etc- you can make a huge batch and then put it in pretty jars or bags.

Unfortunately, my mom doesn't believe in using exact measurements for most of her recipes -haha! So you might have to play around a bit to get your desired flavor.

The ingredients are as follows :
Dry whole milk powder (mom uses Nestle Nido brand)
    Confectioners (powdered) sugar
    Powdered coffee creamer
    Unsweetened coco powder

I'd say that an approximate ratio of measurements is 3 cups milk powder, 1.5 cups sugar, 1 cup creamer powder, and 3/4 cup of coco powder.

Once you have your mix, place 3-4 Tbsps of it in your favorite mug and stir in hot water. To customize your coco, you can add marshmallows and/or a drop of your favorite flavor syrup or extract (I like peppermint, almond, or salted carmel).

    Enjoy!

  • I work at a cafe and one of my favorite seasonal drinks I've brought to the table there is an Imbolc tea latte. It's lavender buds steeped for several minutes, 10g honey and 10g vanilla syrup, and then milk (I use oat or soy) steamed and poured into it. I top it with a couple of lavender buds for presentation. It's themed after the ending of winter, when the snow starts to melt and you can tell that spring will start soon.

  • My special brew: Uskollinen Ystävä (Faithful Friend)

I discovered this tea because of a distant friend. I was struggling to learn my home language and at a low point in general. My friend, who knew my love of pineapples, sent me a care package with this amazing loose leaf tea. It's black tea with peach, orange, and pineapple. My first time drinking it I used only honey, a staple of any tea I drink, and was blown away.

-Place 1 teaspoon of Uskollinen Ystävä tea leaves in cup
-Bring water to a rolling boil and pour over leaves
-Let steep for 3 to 5 minutes
    -Add honey to taste
    -Drink carefully!
This recipe can be altered for use of an infuser but I prefer the leaves directly in my cup as I can just keep pouring hot water in until all the flavour is gone from the leaves.

The translation of the name being Faithful Friend only served to heighten the flavour because not only did this warm drink provide comfort but so too did the fact that I was not alone. Friends come from all over and when we lean on our friends in times of trouble we emerge all the stronger. The Faithful Friend brew will help our silly young filly out of her mess by teaching her the power of friendship.

  • 1 Tablespoon dried lavender flowers(or a small handful if using fresh, remember to strip the stems)
1 cup white granulated sugar(I actually use unprocessed sugar)
2 cups of boiling water for infusion
1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 cups possibly more of cold water
    Ice, optional
Place lavender into a bowl from which you can pour easily
Pour sugar over lavender. Using clean hands rub the lavender into the sugar
Pour boiling water over mixture, while stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Cover and let infuse for at least 30 minutes(hours allows the lavender to more fully flavor the water)
Pour the sweetened lavender water through a strainer into a pitcher. Stir in the lemon juice. Taste and adjust for flavor. Add more water or ice if desired.

Lavender lemonade is awesome! Tastes like summer in a glass.
  • My daughter and I make "Lazy Woman's Iced Teas." We keep 2 2-quart containers in the fridge at all times.

    Plain Tea
Fill one container with hot water from the tap. Hang 4 bags of your favorite plain tea, screw on the cap. Let it cool, then chill it in the refrigerator.

    Flavored Teas
Fill the container with hot tap water. Get two regular tea bags and two bags of flavored tea. We alternate spice and fruit flavors of various kinds. Screw on the cap and let it cool and then refrigerate.

Possible non-fruit teas--Earl Gray, Plantation Mint, Chai, Constant Comment

Possible fruit flavored teas--Green Tea with peach, mango, or wild blueberry& acai; Raspberry Royale, Tazo flavored teas and herbal teas--the current one is an herbal mix with hibiscus, orange peel, rose hips and passion fruit flavors.

We leave the tea bags in until the containers are empty and we need to refill them.

Basically, the varieties depend on whatever is available when we need to stock up. :D

  • My favorite is Chocolate Tea. I was introduced to it when I went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic last year.

    Boil water.
Steep 1 tsp cacao husk in water while it cools for 15 minutes.
Add sugar or honey as needed to make it sweet.
    Enjoy!

    It is absolutely amazing!

  • We drink a pretty good bit of coffee here... especially now that I'm working from home and not drinking office-coffee all day!
Because neither of us use sweetener or creamer, and we use unflavored coffee, we like to experiment with different things. We use a standard (non-Keurig) coffee maker - we put the water & coffee grounds in as usual, and then there are different things we put in with the coffee grounds before we turn on the maker. Our usual is a nice pinch of Chinese Five Spice, maybe a little ginger or cardamom.
On an adventurous day, I took the contents of a black cherry tea bag & put those in with the grounds. I highly recommend it - slightly sweetens the coffee, and makes it less bitter! (We tried adding the contents of a cinnamon-based tea bag one time, but it overpowered the coffee. Do not recommend.)
If you just want plain black coffee, but slightly less bitter, adding a pinch of salt either in with the grounds or into the already-brewed coffee does the trick.

  • My favorite has got to be classic Arizona Sun Tea :) You stick some tea bags in a glass jar, put a lid on it and leave it out in the 100 degree sun to brew. Then you bring it inside and exhaust the household’s entire supply of ice cubes to cool it to the point that it’s drinkable.

  • Wassail is wonderful any time of year, but in my family it's typically a late autumn-winter beverage. Equal parts apple cider and orange juice, add cinnamon and cloves to taste. Heat to a boil and add honey.

  • Rumchatte

Coffee (I use Starbucks Via instant, but whatever you like will work)
Milk (to taste, I like lots)
    Rumchatta (a creamy, cinnamon-flavored liquor), 1 or 2 ounces

I mix a packet of Via with about 2 ounces of water, then fill the rest my 16 Oz mug to within an inch or so of the top. Microwave for about 2 minutes. Top off with Rumchatta.

It’s not the fanciest drink, but it’s yummy!

  • Oh, @Elana, that reminded me of another. It's really hard to find around my area, but International Delight irish cream coffee creamer, vanilla flavored coffee, and sugar. Definitely mix to taste, as my husband says you can't really call mine coffee anymore! :))

  • My favorite drink is a cherry vanilla Italian cream soda.
    6oz of soda water
    2 pumps cherry syrup
    2 pumps vanilla syrup
2-3 oz of half and half
This recipe can actually be used with any flavored syrup.

  • I've been on a sangria kick lately. It's nice, because it lightens up the wine and it's cold. It also comes in various levels of alcohol content for all occassions!

    Red wine (cheap is fine)
    Orange (1 or 2)
    Lemon (1 or 2)
    Cinnamon stick
Optional additional fruit (to taste, I can recommend (not all at once, stick to one or two.) apples, strawberries, blueberries, peaches (works especially well with white or rose based sangrias), blackberries, etc. Frozen fruits are fine.)
Carbonated beverage, optional - makes it less alcoholic for long/hot days or work events, adds fizz, technically not traditional (lemon-line soda or soda water are my preferred choices, ginger ale also works, I find orange soda is just a bit too sweet/artificial. I haven't tried any others. Coke, Diet Coke, Dr Pepper, root beer, etc. are not recommended.)
Rum, optional - definitely not traditional, ideal for events with lots of family you don't want to take to while sober

Slice orange and lemon, discarding rind-heavy pieces. Add to pitcher with wine. If using additional orange and lemons, juice and add (keeps it from getting too fruit-heavy). Add cinnamon stick. Add rum, if using. Do not add ice to pitcher - it will dilute the drink as time passes.

Let sit for at least two hours, preferably longer (allows flavors to mix)

Before serving, add carbonated beverage if using.

    Serve over ice or straight.

For those that are curious, red wine and coke are Calimocho... which is... interesting. You either love it or hate it.

    Mint for garnish (optional)

  • Cold Fusion:

Make cold brew coffee concentrate by steeping 1 part ground dark roast coffee to 2 parts water in a glass container in the fridge overnight (at least 12 hours). Strain and refrigerate.
Make cardamom simple syrup by cracking a handful of cardamom pods and mixing with 2 cups water and 1 cup sugar. Bring to a low boil for 5 minutes. Strain and refrigerate.
Mix 1 part cold brew concentrate, 1 part cold water, 1 part milk (I prefer whole), and cardamom simple syrup to taste. Adjust according to your preferences.

  • My favorite brew is a homemade chai latte:

Heat 1 cup water to a boil.
Once boiling, steep 2 teabags strong black tea in the cup of water (English or Irish Breakfast work well) or about 6 grams if using loose-leaf tea. Let steep for at least 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, heat one cup milk of choice (I'll use either whole milk or oat milk depending on what I've got in the fridge) to a good simmer, taking care not to boil or burn it.
Once tea is steeped, stir in about 1 teaspoon masala chai spice blend (I buy one from the international foods store that's meant specifically for tea, or you can make your own!) until well-dissolved, and 1-2 teaspoons sugar or honey. Top with warm milk (frothed/steamed is great if you have the gadget).

This recipe is easily adaptable to one's taste. Sometimes I add a cinnamon stick while steeping the tea just for extra spiciness.

    So cozy and delicious :)

  • I tried to make something new to drink once, it has a pretty weird taste but I really liked that taste.

    What you need:
    - matcha tea,
    - water,
    - milk,
    - coffee,
    - optional honey or sugar,
    - optional whipped cream.

So I first mix some matcha tea powder with water (only a little just to mix it for me it's easier). I use water in room temperature but you can mix it with warmer or colder water too (just make sure it's not too hot). Make sure it's mixed well. Then I add more water to make matcha about 1/3 cup. Then I do coffee in another cup. You can use hot water to do it, or a little bit hot water just to mix and then add room temperature or cold water. I pour milk (I use cold, from fridge but it's also up to you whatever temperature you want it to be) to the matcha - another 1/3 cup. And then I add coffee to this - another 1/3 cup. You can also add sugar or honey to this (I usually use honey!), you can mix honey at the end or just while doing matcha or coffee part. Sugar and honey mix easier in warmer temperatures so keep that in mind. You can also add whipped cream at the end. :)
