On the hunt for a first horse
  • At the grand age of 25 I am embarking on my own equestrian journey.

Put out ads tonight to try to find myself an Irish Draught to bring on and grow with. My budget is pretty small but these are beautiful horses and I hope to play a small part in stopping the breed from dyeing.

Wish me luck! <3 I'll keep you all updated.

  • Irish Draughts are really nice horses. Good luck.
I love Warmbloods with lots of Sooty and DP. Dark Mahogany Bays, Liver Chestnuts, and Blacks make me super happy. I love horses with color, dfp1, nd1, gray, GP, and KP on the dark base. One day I would like to have a herd of high pt, well papered dark beauties. ID# 257941

  • Good luck! That's so exciting! Are you getting a mare to breed later?

  • I hope so @OscarWildin, I'd prefer a mare so I know at least one will be bred back to an ID and not out to a Warmblood or Tb to produce ISH's but my budget is low so I may need to settle for a gelding and then trade up in a few years time - but I'd prefer to buy something I can keep for 'life'.

I've had an offer to buy an ID x TB 3yo mare which if I bred back to an ID at a later date would give registered ID foals, just waiting for some responses on her temperament as I'm not interested in something that is hot-headed.

  • Definitely, especially if you're hoping for a friend for life. I always end up drawn to hot horses, and I love it, but they're definitely not as easy to just get on and go for a ride. I've had Arabs forever, and they're wonderful, but sometimes I miss how even-tempered my old quarter horse was.

That's super exciting though. Helping a breed survive is such a cool goal.

  • I turned down the one I mentioned as her dam wasn't registered under any specific breed so I'd never be able to register her foals.

However, I have found another one and spent the last few hours building a colour pedigree to try and figure out if this mare would likely throw a Bay, Black or Brown based foal if bred to a Black or Brown stud.

You can take a look at it here; https://ibb.co/jyXkbMD (external link)

Technically this pedigree is wrong as there's one breeding on there resulting in a bay foal from two chestnut horses, and this mare is registered as Chestnut but the pictures I saw... she's Rose Grey.
