Organizing horses
  • So I have a question mainly going out to those that have lots of larger barns.
    - how do you keep up with what horses go where?
    - how do you go about switching them around?
    - how do you remember which horse is which?

    Thinning out herd questions
-How do you decide what foals to keep?
-How do you decide which foundations to keep for showing
    - of the foals that get snipped, how do you decide which to keep for showing?

  • I just have mares, stallions and show horses for the most part. I also have yearling barns for fillies, colts and showers. All I have to do is move the youngsters to an adult barn when they hit two.

I don't need to remember anything. I use tattoos to mark each generation, so it's very easy to pull up whatever I need via the search feature. The tattoos are actually blank - I didn't need pictures. It's just to make generations searchable.

I decide what foals to keep when they are born. Do they pass all the tests (including strict mare testing)? Are they what I was going for out of that cross? If not, then they get altered. I decide what to keep for showing based on PT. When I was just starting to rebuild, I kept 9.5 and up. Now that my stable is self supporting, I only keep 10 and up.

And *all* my horses are in barns that auto show.

  • 1. I use no organization whatsoever. My barns show on different days and I want a mix of different showing levels for each day.
    2. Like Free cell
    3. I use the search function for finding horses rather than digging through barns. On the horses page you can click location and it will take you to the barn or pasture that it is in.

    A. I keep all of them. Mo horses = Mo money
    B. Mo horses = Mo money. I look at how much that stall cost me. Is that horse in that stall going to be worth it.
    c. All of them

  • Although I have show barns, and foal barns, I don't worry about it too much as I find horses on search not in actual barns. I just put them where they fit!

I don't use a lot of tattoos but name horses first up with their generation and usually part of their sire's name. Just makes it easier for me when breeding to a stallion, or putting them in a pasture to group same horses together. I do remember most of my stallions names (they get proper names and Kp/Satin/DP/GP tattoos), so from that I can tell who/what all their progeny are. If I forget I can pull one of them up to refresh my memory for that particular sire. I often too use similar names to their sire as well just to help me remember them

I keep all horses. I might get rid of a few foundations occasionally if I went on a create spree, but all foals I breed stay

  • - I use the public notes to remind me what project each horse is used for (i.e. silver grullo, Ice 5, etc). I also try to keep my horses of each breeding project in its own barn. Babies go into a separate barn to grow out.
    - This part can get a little crazy, like Redbud said, its a lot like a game. I sort of find it a little fun... I keep all of my mares in the pasture for their 3 year old year so they earn 30+ days in pasture. Switching everyone in and out can be pretty time consuming, I wish we could group remove them like we can our barns. Ammit?
    - I name related horses or color groups with similar names (all my wild bays have Wild somewhere in their name, all Ice have Ice in their name) and I like to name foals with a combination of their parents' names. This gets harder as I get more horses, sometimes I have to be pretty creative. I also plan to eventually make tattoos for all my breeding groups and the generations, so I can search for them as well.

    - My babies all stay in a growing barn until they are breeding age. For stallions, before I put them in their prospective barns, I look at all my recent youngsters and any stallions I purchased to make sure I didn't already surpass him in quality. If I have a nicer colt in the barn not too far behind him, I'll let that one go. For fillies, I keep all that pass testing and have the genes I am aiming for (if I'm breeding for Nexus I don't keep a non nexus baby for breeding). When my mares are breeding age I do a second "culling" and see if I have something better coming up (or maybe I bought a better one). As I said before, I can use one horse for multiple breeding projects. I can usually let them go once I get a nice baby from them for each project, but sometimes if I love what they produce then I keep using them.
    - For foundie mares, I keep them for showing if they have a good amount of points when I am done using for breeding. Then I keep them and use them for embryo storage, I don't spay them.
    - I have a very weird habit, I don't keep any snipped horses. It may cost me a little more to run my stable than most, but it keeps my barns less cluttered and I just all around prefer it. It probably isn't your style and that's fine, Ammit made the game to keep cut horses useful, I just personally don't keep them.

  • Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to save up for more barns and add a generation to horses names!

  • @AppleRunStables There is a "clear pasture" button now, right next to the "remove all foals" button.
  • I wish you could seen the "foals this year" in pastures without opening the horses

  • The horses have no pictures until you first open them, so there's nothing to see.

Getting the pictures to generate before opening would be a major reprogramming, and would make for massive demands on the server. It slows it enough when everyone is breeding pastures, if it had to generate images on thousands of horses at the exact same time, it would flat out cripple the server.

I don't think anyone would be happy if it took the server hours to breed a pasture for the first week or two of breeding season.

As it's done now, the pictures are created one at time as people open them.
