How do I make a Chinchilla?
-
I know I have to use one of the Limited Gene Sales. But what other genes does it need to show? I couldn't find chinchilla in the Genetics Guide in the Resources section. Chinchilla is listed on the genes base color. If i do a search for horses with one chinchilla 'must have', none of the horses that show up show chinchilla, and if I mark off two chinchillas and do a search, I don't get any horses show up at all.
-
Needs 2 chinchilla to show. Other than that you can use any base color you want.
Chestnut Chinchilla turns the horse white with red eyes.
Black Chinchilla doesn't do anything to the coat or eyes (as far as I've seen while breeding chinchilla)Thanked by 1OopsDotCom -
Also when looking at the search, you'll want to mark chn as must have and Chn as must not have. That'll force the horses you search to be homozygous Chinchilla
-
A Previous comment in the forums said it shows up best on silver black, but when i added that to the search (one 'must have" each), no horses came up on the search at all. I must still be doing something wrong. And thanks for the pointers!
-
Can you see horses on this link?

If so you should be able to go to the base colors tab and see what I have marked (the search options can be a bit confusing sometimes...)
If you don't see any horses under the link or if you copy what I have checked and there's still nothing, you might need to message Ammit...
Something else you can also do to make it easier until you figure out the drop down menus or the check boxes, you can type in "silver black chinchilla" in the horse color section on the key filters page and it should give you the same horses as using the base color menus and boxesPost edited by LEAcres at 2020-07-24 22:13:16Thanked by 1OopsDotCom -
Yes, you'll need to purchase the license through the Random Gene Sales whenever it shows up next. Once you do, you'll be able to purchase other intact horses, straws, eggs, embryos from other players. It is recessive, so you need two copies for it to show.
Chestnut, Bay, Brown, Black, Chocolate (bb not DP liver palominos) - Chinchilla is vastly different between the colors. It affects red hairs, causing chestnuts to appear white with red eyes like lab mice. Blacks get super dapples, looks really good with silver blacks. Bays, browns, buckskins get that soft white belly. (my favorite!) Chocolate bay/browns get a really nice liver kinda color with the soft white belly.
Here is one of mine, a dark buckskin -

Without you sharing the link you are trying, we can't see what's wrong. ;)
It shows up in the color name, so you can also search for it that way.
Here is a search link for horses that do not have Chn (therefore all horses must be homogeneous for chn/chn), foundation stallions under 5 yrs old:

Wow I've got a lot of horse to go through. Thank you for all the work you did for me. I'm a little confused, can you add chinchilla to a horse that doesn't have it? I've got 8 or 10 silver Blacks from Creates, but they don't carry the list of genes that the horses appear to have to have so you can modify them if needed, and none of them carry a gene called chinchilla.
-
Chinchilla can be added to any Unbred Foundation Horse. You have to pay real money for it when it comes back in the RGS (Roving Gene Sale). It cannot be obtained any other way (if your wanting to breed for it). It's here right now till the end of the month, after that who knows when it'll come back. And any Silver Bkack will get the gorgeous dapples. The only thing they need in order to turn into those dapple show stoppers is for their color to say "Silver Black". If your looking for a specific color or look past that though we can help you to know what to get. Hope this helped!❤Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

I do have a bunch of silver blacks, and a bunch of Ex Pro Silvers. There's the possibility one of the silvers might have E or e, it would nice to start out with a pro, but I'm not sure what the chances are of one having an e. Or how much it would cost me to gene test them all. I guess i should get out the calculator. or flip a coin. The coin would probably be just as effective as the calculator and a lot faster lol.
-
Just to clarify, you'll want a horse who has one or two E (e is red, E is black) with no Agouti (aa)Thanked by 1OopsDotCom
-
Gene testing is only 100hbs so worth doing them. But yes silver blacks give you the best effect with chinchilla I reckon, silver browns are nice too. The gene test will show the chinchilla strand if you stick the box "show all"Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

I've narrowed it down to 2 horses and I have a cramp in my neck lol but at least the sun's not up...yet. All the other creates I had were basically the same with variations of flaxen and Pangere. I do know that the ZZ one is guaranteed to pass a silver gene to its foal. I tried to write this out 3 times and kept getting it muddled (it's now 3:30 am), it's more likely to make sense if I just post the two. If Flaxen or Pangere are important, I'll go back and dig them out.

And I know it matters whether it's Ee or EE or ee, likewise with A's, but those can all be adjusted with gmt's. The decision is between Ex Pro -Z 9.9 B, or regular create with ZZ and 9.8 Yellow. Too bad they aren't both old enough to just breed the two and see what I get. And I know the Stud can produce 50 foals, and the mare only 1, per year. That also can be adjusted with gmts. If only that silly -/z wasn't zZ. For that matter, I don't even know if the the -/z can be bred to become a zZ at all. Or I could just put a chinchilla on both of them, I'm about ready to do that just to resolve the issue. I've got a few free ones from buying HBs. It's time to do a little more neutering, I think, maybe I won't need to buy them then.

The second one is chestnut, so she would turn all white with chinchilla, the first is bay so would look mostly white too but with darker legs. You have some nice silver black exceptional silvers that could be good to add chinchilla to?Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

As far as the exceptional or regular create, that's up to you!Post edited by Kintara at 2020-07-25 03:23:15Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

The Exc Prod silvers are all -/Z
The silver blacks are ZZ but not exceptionals.
So it kinda depends on the difference between the -/Z and ZZ. I know the -/ means there is an option of either guaranteed a Z in the foal or chancing not. What does this mean to a breeding program?
Surely somewhere I can find one thats got two z's and is an exceptional.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2020-07-25 03:56:04 -
If you're ok with one a little older I'd gladly give you this girl

if you breed a -/Z it means the foal has a 50% chance of inheriting the trait ; why not search the auction tomorrow and just type in Silver int he color bar to see if you can find what you need ; you don't HAVE to start with exceptionals ; you can bring that into your breeding program as they become available

So the question is, how many GMTs are you willing to use to perfect the base horse? The closer you can find, the fewer GMTs you need to spend.
If a horse is zZ (written as -/Z in testing results) each foal has a 50% chance of getting silver. Z/Z horses will pass it on to all foals. It takes one GMT to add a silver gene, if you go that route.
Personally, I only use horses that are EE for my chinchilla line. I don't want any e's floating around in there, because eventually you could get ee foals, which will be all white and aren't what I'm after. It's one GMT to change e to E too
It's also one GMT to change sex, so if you want a stallion and can only find mares, for instance, you can change one to a stud.
The advantage of using a mare is that you can buy straws and then get homozygous offspring (important in a gene like chinchilla that must be homozygous to show) and straws are generally cheaper than eggs. If you start with a stud only, and you don't buy any eggs, you won't have homozygous ones until gen 3 at the earliest. But one foal a year really doesn't get you far if you're trying to start a line.
If you use a stud, you get a lot more foals, but most of them will only be heterozygous chinchilla. But if you can buy eggs, or even spare gen 2 colts, from someone with a mare, that will give you a boost too. If you can get a homozygous gen 2 stud and breed him to all those heterozygous gen 2 mares from your own stud, you get about half chinchillas in the third gen.
I also have a couple you could have if you'd like

When it comes to real money, I think it's important to know you're going to see the results you want though!
Depending on how many GMTs you're willing to throw at this, what I did with my chinchilla boy was use an Exceptionally Producing black stallion, because he was B papered and was EE and het for sooty as well. I used 4 GMTs on him, but I put two copies of silver on him, made him taller (because I try to breed for height on top of my color lines, so this isn't necessary by any means), and added an extra Ssty. Then I added chinchilla, and he's perfect for what I wanted.
G1Ch Rune Observer
There are a lot of ways you can get what you want, but the move is to know how many GMTs you want to spend, and what you want your end result genetically to be. I knew I wanted homozygous black, silver, and sooty, and I wanted him tall.Formerly OscarWildin

I had a go at making a base for you, it would cost 2 GMT's (250k HB's) to get EEaaZZ.

He did come with Hom Dun though... which may ruin the chinchilla effect. Here's an idea of the base colour he'd have once GMT'ed;

In which case, here's another basic I just created (also 2 GMT's)

0.0 Oh no, don't be making horses for me, please. I need to do the money part myself. I've got a few horses I could work with, the one i really like needs to have the white part colored and the colored part a white or light color. Now that something I don't think can be done. I did find a 3 year old silver black in my barns. Too bad she's already levelled off... I don't thing I am going to gmt that =giggle=

If you want the stud @OopsDotCom but don't want me to financially contribute, you can have him for 115,700 HB's - or 228,200 HB's and I'll add the remaining silver on for you too.

Yes. It would be simple coincidence, not genetics.
-
There is heaps of horses in Oops barns that would be suitable. If you want an exceptional, just chose one of the silver blacks and gmt the extra silver to make them homozygous?
This one is EE but doesn't have sty, the second one is Ee but does have one sty. You have quite a few others though! Even one of the many other exceptionals, then gmt the silver on if you wanted one older etc. None are absolutely perfect but heaps would be with one one or two gmt's

What am I doing wrong? On a search, I un-check spays and un-check geldings, add my number as owner, and put exceptionally perfect in the tattoo. I've tried putting "xper" in the name as that's how I tag the exceptionally Perfects. Nor matter what I try, I can't find my own Ex Per's in a search.

@OopsDotCom the Silver Pocket Watch is a Yellow papered Rank Special, which means they are 'Perfect' creates (Yellow/9.9PT). Here's a (mostly) complete list of which ones are and are not ExPer/ExPro.

An ExPro (Exceptional Producer tattoo) will paper Red.
An ExPer (Exceptionally Perfect tattoo) will paper Red AND have a PT of 10.4
The 'All Washed Up' HH is probably the closest to what you need but they come with three extra dilutes - the Cream and the Champagne will completely wipe out the Chinchilla.
The other one is 'Storm Warning' which also comes with Champagne, Splash and Frame. The Champagne will over-dilute, the splash will wipe out the bottom half of colour (depending on WF) and the Frame will add more white areas and increase death chance of foals (if breeding frame to frame).
Sorry it's not better news, there was a post by LadyHawkeStables a while ago discussing how there are very few Silver Black HH's for those that don't want to breed excessive dilutes. That's why I made that ExPerf Silver Black for you, just incase it's what you needed - but obviously appreciate it's not.Post edited by DarkFrost at 2020-07-26 06:12:14HJ1: 266615
