Excited duck mom moment!
-
So as most of y’all know I have ducks (2 female one male), originally I had two male one female. So I hatched two ducklings and got one of each gender, two of the males went to live with a friend and her ducks. Well this morning I let my three out to feed them and I look in their house to see if I need to clean and I see....Agnes first egg! I’m so excited and this past 6 months has made the wait worth it.Licensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

I'm going to ask questions - don't laugh at me, I know nothing about ducks. :-/
Did Agnes just lay one egg? Do they only lay one egg at a time?
Is the egg for eating or hatching? If hatching, how long will it take?
Do all your ducks have names? Are they a particular kind of duck?
Thank you. I'm a curious person (or nosey if you prefer!) :) -
She may lay more through the day (idk about that). Eating mostly but one or two I will hatch to give to my friend. It typically takes ducks 28 days to hatch at about 99.6 degrees in the incubator. Yes all three of my ducks have names Agnes and Leo (the male) are from my original three, and Gertrude I hatched out of some eggs my friend gave me. They are all pure Pekin ducks (the white ones)Licensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

OOhhh i didnt know you were eating them lol ; is the taste different than chicken eggs?
-
Duck eggs are much richer than a chicken eggLicensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

Ducks lay one egg a day and they are richer than chickens but they are soooo good! But I've found people who won't touch duck eggs because they said they taste weird so I think it's more of an acquired taste... I only have one laying hen who is a Pekin and she lays her eggs religiously between 6am-8pm and they are massive so if anything I'm cooking requires two large eggs, I just use one duck egg. The largest one she's laid was almost 4oz but she typically lays around 3.6 and 3.8oz eggs
-
@Bambi207 @GildedFire richer as in thicker or a more eggie taste ? I am poking at hubby for chickens for eggs , but Ducks are quieter lol
-
More like a egg taste and I heard they are much more nutrient holdingLicensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

And ducks are NOT QUIETER IN ANY SENSE. Females are extremely loud lol. Mine wake me up at about 7:30 to let them outLicensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

lol but they dont crow at 5AM and to get eggies from chickens you need a rooster
-
Actually no, you don’t need a rooster.Licensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

I love using duck eggs for baking. The richer flavor comes through so nicely.
-
Yes you do not need a rooster to get eggs, anyone who keeps a rooster it's either for breeding or flock protection... My rooster starts crowing around 4am... But my ducks are quiet till I let them out and then they go ham in their pools... That's another necessity, without water they can't evenly distributed the oils on their feathers so they end up with wet feather which causes thermoregulation and buoyancy issues.. I rescued two Call ducks from the auction back in January, it took over half the year to treat their wet feather.. my Call duck hen absolutely hates my husband :))
Anytime he touches her she starts screaming and trying to bite him but she's so tiny, she can't cause any real harm -
I Googled white pekin duck, they are pretty. Apparently they are known as American Pekin. Thanks for answering my questions, I'm interested in loads of things. :)

Speaking of roosters crowing:
The therapeutic riding program I volunteer with keeps some chickens, and at one point we had a Bantam rooster and a Barred Plymouth Rock rooster that would have crowing contests. The Bantam's crow was quite high pitched and the Plymouth Rock's crow was much lower in pitch. We also had a dog.
At any time of day, the Bantie would crow: rrrrr. The Plymouth Rock would respond: RRRRR. The dog would chime in: Owoooo. Then the sequence would repeat. They kept it up for a while and then there would be silence. It always made me laugh to listen to them.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2020-09-20 05:07:30 -
I actually prefer duck and goose eggs to chicken. They are definitely more filling for me, taste wise I don’t notice a difference.
@annismyrph you don’t need a rooster for eggs, but you do need a rooster if you want the eggs to hatch. I had two hens for 4-H and never had an issue with them not laying eggs, then a few years later my sisters got two hens (different breed) and they also laid eggs every day. We had both sets of hens for 2-4 years and they laid eggs the whole time. Also if you want to have chicks you could buy semen and AI your hen, weird yes but it is a thing. Then you wouldn’t have to deal with the rooster.
