Are There Any Other New Language Learners Here?
  • Hello! Ok so I'm one of those people that really likes learning new/interesting things and I'm also homeschooled, so I thought it would be fun to learn a new language! I started about a month about and I'm pretty excited about how far I've gotten with it! So I was wondering if there was anyone else here who maybe either is learning or has learned a different language? If so then you could share it here and maybe we could Both learn something about each other's chosen language! I'm also learning with an language app called Duolingo as well for the extra help for me(I have a learning disability so it can take a bit longer to learn things) and I have completed a whole skill level on it!

Anyway I like to ask questions too, like why have you picked the language that you did? What made you want to learn a new language? What do/did you use to learn it? And do you have any learning tips to help in learning a different language? Post below with any answers and/or any examples of the language your leaning! I would love to know something about it!

    So I'll start first!

The language I am currently trying to learn is what's called Standard Irish! I have chosen to learn Irish (besides the fact that it would be fun) because its been something of a dream of mine to eventually be able to visit Ireland one day!!! Part of my family has Irish heritage as well so it would be super cool to see Ireland! And maybe a little helpful if you knew that country's language too lol! So that's how that started my wanting to learn it!

My one language learning tip would probably be to not try and do Too much at one time in a day, you just end up getting tired and won't remember a lot of it(at least that is my experience)

Something that you might not have known about Irish is the fact that Irish is actually Different than Gaelic! Irish has a few different Language Dialects and Gaelic is an Irish dialect that is not the same as speaking Irish! So I am learning Standard Irish(kind of like Standard English lol) Not Gaelic, though it is still spoken in some parts of Ireland and would be fun to learn as well!

Also the Irish Language is a little tricky and a bit funny to learn because it is wrote pretty much Backwards but is read Forward when reading it on a page!

*Some Examples of Irish (just a few as I'm still a beginner lol but I will add more later)!

Dia Duit agus maidin mhaith! Conas atá tú?

    Is bean mé!

    Ithim arán agus ólaim bainne!

    Léim an nuachtán!

    Tá fáilte romhat!

    Slán!

I may not be a very good teacher lol but if you want to know more then I will do my best to explain for you! Ask below to see what it says, I will update this as I learn more!
Hope you have fun learning with me! ;)

  • да! Аз уча Български!
    (Yes! I am learning Bulgarian.)

The most important thing about languages is you can't memorize them. You have to acquire them. It's like training a horse. You can read all the books you want but you don't really know how to do it until you actually DO IT. You have to use a language in situ. to actually learn it. The best way to learn is to find a native speaker who is willing to have regular conversations with you. Duolingo is good but nowhere near as good as having a conversation. After I stopped trying to use an app and started using the ideas laid out in the below video I went from barely understanding to having entire conversations in Bulgarian in about 3 weeks only doing 30 minutes a day. Granted it is a very stilted conversation but we can have them now.

Our favorite game is to use speech therapy images and then play 20 questions about an object in the picture.

  • I studied French in high school and it ended up being one of my majors in college. I have been out of school for longer than I'd like to admit but I still listen to a lot of French music. Find music in your chosen language and sing along even if you are a terrible singer. Most of my favorites these days are Canadian and they have such an interesting accent, especially in Nova Scotia. Sometimes I'll listen to a song 20 times to figure out what they're trying to say it's so thick, but it's always exciting even I suddenly get it.

I agree with Ammit that if you can find someone to talk to you it's very helpful. We had a lot of Japanese students at our university and you could sign up to be a speaking partner for them. You would just meet up once or twice a week and chat and it seemed very helpful for them, especially because there was such a large community of Japanese so they didn't always mingle and much as they could have with Americans. They said, I'm very introverted and I tend to see language in a weirdly analytical way so for me I really prefer French literature to talking to people. I read so much French in college. If you're interested in every checking out a little intro to French, watch the movie Amelie. It's really cute!

I spent one semester in France and it was awesome! I was there when 911 happened and the people were very supportive initially. We came home around Christmas so we weren't there when the political relations got really strained. We went to Burgundy and stayed with host families and did the grape harvest. Then we went to Paris and that was a blast! I feel like studying a very widely spoken language like French can help you learn about the whole world too. One semester we studied Africa and read African French literature. We went a bit into french culture in Asia and the Caribbean. There is so much to learn and you could never know it all!

I also studied German for 3 semesters and man I love the grammar of that language (ok I guess that qualifies me as a nerd). My professor was Austrian and to this day I think people who speak with a German accent sound funny.

I love languages and my other major was linguistics, which I thought was really fun. When you break it down into its smallest parts, language is basically math with rules and formulas and equations. You can break the grammatical structure of any language down into a formula. Senior year in college in order to graduate we had to do a linguistics workshop and every year the professor would bring in a foreign student who speaks a language that isn't commonly spoken in the US. The year I did it we worked with a student from Kyrgyzstan. We were supposed to basically learn the rules and vocabulary of Kyrgyzs by asking her questions. It was really fun! I still remember some phrases like men seni suyum means I love you and mushuq means cat. It's weird that I still remember that but even if you stop studying Irish certain things will stick with you! You'll expose yourself to different ideas and perspectives too and that's very valuable.

Edit: you've made me want to find a French audiobook to listen to.

  • Oh, jeez, I have so many languages I’m trying to teach myself...
ASL, Quenya, Sindarin, more Spanish, more Latin, Irish, German, and maybe French...

It’s so ironic that I love languages because I have a communication disorder. I’m learning bits and pieces of Quenya, German, and Irish by learning songs, but since I’m a full time college student, I don’t have time at the moment.

I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
  • I’m currently learning how to speak Spanish. I started learning because I have a lot of friends that speak that language, and I wanted to be able to have a conversation with them in Spanish. I stopped for a while though because I didn’t have time, but I started learning again recently in school.

I also use Duolingo! It’s best to try and learn a few words at least every other day, but if you don’t have time to do that, it’s alright if you miss a few days. For some people, it helps to use flash cards.

If you know someone else who is learning/knows the language, say what you know to them. You and the other person might learn something new! If you can’t do this, I try having a conversation with yourself. Hearing yourself say the words out loud can help with pronunciation.

I also know a little bit of Irish, Dutch, Greek, Japanese, and Hawaiian (and a few more), but I haven’t practiced in a while, and probably won’t try learning more about those languages until I’m comfortable speaking Spanish.

  • Wow, thanks everyone for the awesome advice! There are a few more language Learners than I thought! I have revised my Irish examples(I was in a hurry and didn't spell check everything the first time lol)!

@Ammit- Thank you! Bulgarian sounds cool! Is it more of an symbol language? I'm not sure if I can find a native speaker in person but the homeschool course that I'm doing does have many videos with native Irish speakers and I do try and speak along! I actually think I have the reading part down! Need to work more on the writing and speaking parts a lot more!

@pinkie- Holy cow! And just wow!! I had to read that more than once to try and absorb all the amazing things you said lol! I know a little but my other sister knows French and has taken 3 semesters of it! She would absolutely love to see Pairs one day too!

@Nightphoeix- Wow, that's a few to try and learn at once there lol! Learning with songs sounds super fun! I have a learning disability but I don't think I have heard of a communication disability?

@KittyPeri14- Hey, a fellow Duolingo learner! My mom knows some Spanish and had even spent some time on the Texas/Mexico boarder when she was a kid!

If anyone would like to know what my examples say then you can ask but here are a few words to help you understand more:

    Bean- means woman

    Ithim- I eat

    Ólaim- I drink

    Nuachtán- newspaper

    Bainne- milk

    Arán- bread

Thanks everyone! And if anyone would like to share any Irish that they know that would be pretty helpful to me as well lol

  • I took Spanish in High School but I don’t really remember much of it now. Do I dare say that was 26 years ago?!?! I do really want to learn ASL & also maybe take a refresher course in Spanish. I am no where near being fluent but I do still know how to say a few things in Spanish.
  • When I was at school in the late 1960s/early 70s in the UK, languages were taught by chanting verbs (I am, you are, he/she/it is etc). I did French and Latin and just couldn't keep up as things got harder so I assumed I was bad at languages. Later in life I was a teaching assistant in a secondary school (11 - 16 year olds) and was supporting students in French so I took an evening class in the language. These days languages are taught differently and much more naturally with speaking and listening to conversations and I found that I was able to keep up. I also had to support a German class having never learned that language. Luckily it was a first year class so I listened to the teacher really hard and never let on to the teacher or students that I didn't know the language. At the end of the year I told the teacher that I didn't know German before and she said that I must have an ear for languages! I'm not sure about that but I am definitely not as bad at them as I thought.

I am using Duolingo now to learn languages as now that I am older the one thing that I dread is getting any form of dementia, and it's thought that using your brain can help. I did start off learning Irish as I have Irish ancestry but gave up when it got too hard. I worked through the French course instead and am now upping my levels in that language. I have now started the German course and intend to add another language, possibly one I know nothing about, once I have got to the end of the German. Many years ago I also took a Level 1 course in British Sign Language which gave me an insight into deaf culture.

What a bunch of polyglots we all are!

  • I love learning languages.

English is not my native, so I learned that at school, together with German and Spanish (of which I have forgotten most)

I have a BA in Russian, and studied in St Petersburg for some time, I looooooved it!
Now I am learning European Portuguese through Memrise, newspapers, TV-series and general use, since I have moved to Portugal.

I have also started to look at arabic (levantine dialect), just for fun. My goal is not to be fluent in it, just to have fun.

Hunt and Jump is a great tool for learning words, I name most of my horses after the words I need to learn.
  • @HorseAngel

It’s part of my autism. What used to be called Asperger Syndrome is now called Social Communication Disorder/Pragmatic Language Impairment, which basically just means I’m autistic with a communication disorder. I struggle with any kind of communication (I don’t notice social cues, can’t detect sarcasm that’s not blatantly obvious, struggle to find the words I need, etc.)

  • Nightphoenix - my younger daughter has Asperger Syndrome. She wasn't diagnosed until she was 23 but thinking about it now a lot of things about her make sense. Like you, she also has trouble reading social cues such as body language and facial expressions. Since the diagnosis she has learned to cope pretty well and is holding down a job, has married and has a daughter of her own. I do worry about her though because life is sometimes hard for her. (I'm a mum and worry about both my daughters, but with her it's about specifics!) :)

  • @HarmonyC- that's cool, Spanish is probably a lot more used than the one that I'm learning lol!

@White Valley- that's great! Another Duolingo user lol, you sound like a very good teacher to me! Yup Irish is a tricky one to learn! Is German a hard language to learn?

@Herzeloyde- that's pretty awesome! I think I will definitely add more languages to my now growing list to learn lol! I like that idea, I think I will start giving a few of mine Irish word names!

@Nightphoenix- oooh really? I'm Autistic too, they classed it as part of my learning disability when I was tested in 7th trade for it though! I didn't know that was what it was being called now lol! I have a lot of those same issues as well, I can read just fine but trying to learn other things is a little harder, I don't really understand social cues either and have a hard time with finding words! I often get confused in a lot of social situations and get really nervous if there is any kind of tension(I hate conflict but that is probably just me being me lol)

  • German is considered a level 2 language for English speakers. Spanish/French/Italian and other romance languages are level 1 and considered the easiest.

Not sure what you mean by picture language? Bulgarian is a Slavic language like Russian and uses an almost identical alphabet.

  • They have a different alphabet called Cyrillic. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_script#:~:text=The Cyrillic script (%2Fs%C9%AA,North%20Asia%20and%20East%20Asia.
  • I've grown up bilingual because my family lives in the States, but my mother is from the Netherlands, so I speak Dutch as well as English, but my Dutch is nowhere near as fluent as I'd like.

I picked up Duolingo for Spanish a while back, and then life got in the way, so I need to continue, but I also started the Dutch course just as a refresher and a way to hear it more often. I lived over there with family for a few months back in 2015, and it improved my language skills a LOT, but my English-speaking partner was with me so I was still speaking more English than Dutch. (it also isn't helpful that everyone in the Netherlands wants to show off how incredible they are at speaking English, so you don't always get a chance to practice).

I've been meaning to pick up French at some point as well, but Spanish feels more applicable to my everyday life, just because there's a large Spanish-speaking population in the US. My mom used to speak several different languages to me when I was really young, so I bet some of it is still locked away in my brain somewhere :))

  • Thank you pinkie and Ammit for the great information!

@OscarWildin- Wow, you lived in the Netherlands? That is pretty cool! Some of my grandparents were Dutch! I know a little bit of French and Spanish but I'm definitely not fluent in either of them! I want to learn a few more languages after I get near the end of my Irish course too! I can't believe how many people here are bilingual or learning a different language! :O

  • I took 4 years of German in my school years.

Obviously I don't remember much of it now. I took it because of my family ancestry. My high school offered Latin, French, German or Spanish. German was what appealed to me. Although if Dutch was available, I would have taken it instead because at that time my family had an old Bible that was in Dutch since some of our family had come from the Netherlands. My great grandmother grew up speaking Dutch in her home because that was what her parents spoke at home.

Some years ago I started taking lessons in Sindarin, but that has stopped for now since I don't have the time to commit to those lessons.

I suppose I am what people could technically consider bilingual. English is actually my 2nd language, sign language is my first.

I tried Duolingo, but it didn't work for me because it didn't teach the language like a real school course would. Words were taught without explaining why they were this and that. There was no grammar and syntax rules and such covered.
  • I took French from the 7th grade through HighSchool many many years ago ; and until recently went to Canada every summer and stay in Quebec for a few days ; even though now my European freinds say i have a " Canadian " accent when i speak with them lol at least i kept up the language.
I also learned Italian from my great grand parents and grand parents ; they were pretty strict about cussing in front of children ; so of course i learned the foul words first lol.
I used to work with Standard Bred Race horses and the family i worked for was Italian ,, so i kept that up
Now i am learning Spanish ; which is actually harder for me now becuase when i "swap" in my brain i tend to think in French first and since all 3 are considered " romance" languages and all 3 are based off of Latin many words are similar but different enough that the translations dont work from one to the other.

  • @Forestshadow- Dutch and German seems to be more appealing than most lol! Sign language sounds great! You have a point with Duolingo but I'm also taking the school course for Irish Which does help a bit with that!

@annismyrph- Wow! That's pretty cool! My family and I had visited Canada once for a week to see the Stampede! Wish we could have gone back sometime, my sister who studied French loved it there too! Knowing all 3 romance languages must be hard because of that lol! I kinda want to learn Italian too, probably after I get at least some of my Irish down!

  • It's cool that so many people are working on additional languages! I've studied some French in school and am trying to improve it for work (I'm Canadian), mostly using a combination between things like Duolingo and reading some basic books for beginners/kids. I'm also planning to hunt down some audiobooks so I can hear the proper pronunciations too. Music is a good idea, might have to try that too.

I'm also hoping to add Mandarin and German to the mix someday when I have more time. I have several friends who can speak Mandarin and parts of my family are German, so I think it would be cool to be able to at least have some basics.

I find I'm usually ok at reading and writing languages but speaking and listening are pretty difficult for me. I'd agree with Forestshadow that while I like that Duolingo is more conversation-focused and good for listening to the words, I miss learning the basic grammar rules too. Plus they teach more France-French than Quebecois-French, which is a bit different. But overall, it's nice to have things broken up into short practice sessions you can do everyday even if you don't have much time.

Best of luck to everyone with their learning goals!

  • I know I'm kinda blown away by how many are learning languages here! Hey, audiobooks are a great idea too! I hope you are doing well with learning the language! I find that the reading and writing are the easier parts if learning a new language lol, I'm not very good at the speaking parts yet! I like Duolingo but I'm also taking a course with plenty of speaking videos in it as well!

  • I grew up reading classical mythology from my father's sister's college mythology book, and was fascinated by it. I'm not at all certain how it ended up on my family's book shelf. When offered a choice of Latin or Spanish in 9th grade I naturally gravitated to Latin, especially since the word around my classes was "Take Spanish, it's easier," and I thought I'd had enough easy classes. *D*.

I studied Latin for 4 years in High School, falling in love with it during the first two weeks. I thought I'd like to teach it, and so took another 4 years in college. By the time I graduated, Latin had fallen out of favor (this was the sixties when the mantra was not to learn anything that wasn't "relevant," so studying a "dead" language went out of favor. I also had 3 years of French in high school and 1 semester of German in college.

All this time later--my college graduation was in 1967--I've forgotten most of my foreign languages.

    image
  • Oh well that's sad, Latin does sound like something that would be super cool to learn,at least it is to me lol! I absolutely love reading Mythology as well! :x And you would probably be a great teacher too!
