Consistent and inconsistent and what exactly are they used for?
-
So ive been playing for awhile now and have gotten accustomed to thinking that a horses consistenty has to do soley on showing as from previous topics i have seen it was always talked about how the horse shows. Now today i came across a post with answers regarding to a horses consistentcey involving how they breed and pt scores of the foals and some that are inconsistent and get GMT to consistent could in fact raise the horses pt score all together but only a small amount like a 10.40pt inconsistent stallion being changed to consistent ended up raising the stallions pt to 10.50. I am absolutely confused now on what a horses consistentcey actually stands for and what it really affects?? Is it showing and how they place in the class or is it breeding performance and pt scores lf the resulting foals?
-
Ok so i searched the FAQ and found this for consistency.
What does Consistent / Inconsistent mean? This is a measure of how consistently a horse will perform when shown. A perfectly consistent horse will have exactly the same score both times it is shown in a week. This is a solid, reliable, predictable show horse.
Inconsistent horses will have days where they perform flawlessly and outshine the competition, but on other days their heart won’t be in it, and they will place much lower in the class.
Consistency is mostly applicable to showing results. The only relationship to breeding ability is that inconsistent horses are more likely to have inconsistent foals.
:-/ so my guess is the post i recently seen wasnt accurate about breeding ability and affecting foal pt scores? -
Consistency influences a horse's showing scores.
Each time a horse trains, it gets a few points added to its cumulative show score. You can see that score if you look at a horse's show records, and that score is used to determine where it places in a particular class. Consistent horses will have the same score every time. Inconsistent horses will have some fluctuation, swinging a couple of points higher or lower, which sometimes can help the m out and sometimes can hurt them.
For example, this horse (https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=10830526) is consistent, and if you look at the show record, you'll see both week's show scores are the same. If you look at Week 40, for example, she scored 218 in both of her 6W classes.
Then this horse (https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=10830540) is a little bit inconsistent. HIS Week 40 scores for his 6W class were 217 and 220, so both a little bit higher and a little bit lower than the mare above.
This used to be a lot more important before the show system was overhauled, when the bulk of your income came from placing in the upper half of the class, so it was almost never advantageous to enter a horse in a class it was unlikely to do well in, and if inconsistency could mean the difference between winning and losing money, well....
Now the bulk of your income comes from the horse's earned points, and unless they place absolute last in a class, they will earn some points.
Consistent horses have higher PT scores than inconsistent horses because.... well, because. XD I realize that isn't a very satisfactory answer, but it is calculated into the Performance Testing total. Which makes sense; a horse that is going to be reliable and unflappable in the ring is a better performer than one who might be a rockstar one day and the next day decide it doesn't like how that fence post is looking at it.
It does have a hereditary component. Consistent horses are likely to have consistent offspring. However, it is not 100% guaranteed. Two consistent horses will throw inconsistent foals; two inconsistent horses can have consistent offspring.
Sorry for the essay, but I hope this helps! -
I think it also adds a pinch of mystery to the class placements. I mean, how boring would it be if we could predict every place in a class? The inconsistent horses make sure to keep things interesting!
I will add that people regularly post about 2 perfect horses having an inconsistent foal. It's not a rare event. It's not PREDICTABLE, but it is also not the kiss of death. Plus it only costs one IV to GMT an inconsistent horse to consistent

ConfluenceStable: Isn't it one GMT to make an inconsistent horse consistent? That's currently 10 IV's.
-
Consistency also affects the PT score, so yes if a horse is GMT'd consistent, their PT score increase, how much depends on how inconsistent they were.

You're right, SandyCreek! Sorry!
