Well, I find myself in yet another dilemma! I've been itching for another "project" horse as my youngest is now 4 and working well under saddle. I was cruising the classifieds when I stumbled upon something interesting in my price range (aka poor, looking for something super cheap!) I'm not big on Arabians, having had a few bad experiences with them (half and full bred) myself, but so many people sing their praises, I'm thinking I might give it another go. The horses I've had those bad experiences with were not handled well by their owners or had been passed around quite a bit. This little guy would be well backed before I start him under saddle and I'm hoping that will make all the difference, giving him a solid foundation and a happy life.
Since I have no familiarity with bloodlines and limited experience with the breed in general, I'd love a little feed back on the pics below. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I would pass. He looks halter bred (most of the bad stereotypes about the breed are based on the halter bred ones) and arabs only have a lot of value among arab people and if you are not part of that world you will have a harder time getting full value for him at resale time.Need to contact me? I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Also, keep in mind you shouldn't really start riding Arabians until they are four years old, so you would be waiting a very long time before you could start riding him. It would give you plenty of time for putting a solid foundation on him, but most non-Arabian people do not realize they cannot be ridden until later than most breeds.Thanked by 1High Five Acres

I'm not overly concerned about his resale value, since his price is super low. I have no clue what sort of bloodlines the few purebred Arabs I have know were from. Two were very compact builds that looked more like a riding horse body type and three were incredibly fine boned, stunningly beautiful (and equally brainless!) so I'm guessing that would be the halter type, right Ammit? If this boy has a chance of coming home with me, he needs to be calm and intelligent!
Mostly what I'm looking for is a sturdy trail horse prospect that I can put a lot of miles on in the future. I notice many endurance riders have arabs or arab crosses, and with the length of time i like to spend in the saddle, that might suit me well. I've really been trying to "expand my horizons" by having new adventures and challenging my ingrained beliefs. This might be a good opportunity to do so. Or it might be a horrible mistake. I suppose the mystery in that is worth exploring. Worst case scenario, I lose a little money, gain a pasture potato and learn a valueable lesson, right? :)
As far as starting him later, that makes sense since they are finer boned and have a shorter back. I plan on doing a ton of ponying and ground work, so I'm willing to wait to start him under saddle if i do get him. I'm going to trek upstate to see him in the morning so I'll add a few current pics of him.
Thanks for the input and I should be able to provide more info after my visit!Specializing high quality dark horses with lots of chrome.
