PT score improvement
  • What PT do most people look for in each generation? Specifically in stallions?

I started with a 7.2 PT foundation stallion. Got a colt out of him that tested better than him and has a 10.1 PT. when the second gen colt was breed this year he gave me a 10.5 PT colt. I'm just not sure I'm happy with the improvement, shouldn't I be looking for a higher 11 number in the third gen?

  • I prefer my horses to go up by 0.5 per generation. Looking for a 1.0 per generation is a bit over the top I think. I want my foundies to have an AFPT above 10, my 2nd gens 10.5 and so on.

  • Ignore the foundations score it is random. Use 9.9 as your starting PT score when using foundies. They don't need to have it but you should assume foundations are of equivalent quality to a horse that sires a 9.9 AFPT.

  • At a .5 per generations a foundation should sire 9.9 AFPT, a second gen should sire 10.4 AFPT, a third gen should sire 10.9 AFPT. (if you are going for .5 gain in AFPT per generation)

The key here is AVERAGE pt for the foals. The average of all foals tells you how good a sire is not their best foal.

  • To add to that, I myself rarely cull studs by their AFPT. I just make sure they are always superior to their sire. Low PTs could easily be the mares' fault, and I am content as long as the boys test superior.
