Mare papering questions.. why didn't they paper higher?
  • These 2 mares confuse me. I think they should have papered higher.

    First mare is http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3863170
I don't understand why she papered red when her AFPT is 11.1 I have foundations mares (boosted) that papered Blue with a lower AFPT llike this mare http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3568217#2

    Second mare is http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2475495

She has an AFPT of over 12 and she papered blue.

Did something change with the requirements and I missed it? I just want to make sure I understand

    Thanks
  • I have had the same thing happen. It is not new. It is a combo of the stallions breeding level and they are probably at the upper range of their receptive paper levels.

  • The blue mare is much better quality then the red mare. Simple as that. The PT score was artificially boosted by the higher ability studs you used on both those mares.

  • OKay so the first mare.. even though I bred her to an unboosted stallion first and got in 11 that was just her higher end and not indicative of her ability?

and poop on the second mare.. she should have been gold darn it
  • Ya the second mare is not even close, she is generations behind her star sire, as is her dam. Looking at the foals I see that in almost every cross. Stallions 10+ points better then the mares.

It happens when you use a lot of double boosted studs to start a line with normal foundation mares. Means almost all the fillies will pass mare advice (easy to be better then mom when she is 10 points worse then dad) and almost none of the colts. Not something you necessarily need to change/fix, just know that your mares are going to have higher AFPT then other mares for their paper levels. You can still compare the mares in your herd just can't compare to the herds of people who started with even ability.

If you do want to "fix" it, just use strict mare advice all the time (remember it is harsher these days) and maybe give your mares an extra two generations to catch up and they should even out.

  • Yep I always always use strict mare advice. I figured if I breed the mares to better stallion it will give me a jump or better broodmares and more show horses. I SAT as well The those that stay intact I know are decent. If I get a colt that stays, it's a miracle, but that's what I want.. fewer colts.. more mares!

Oh well back to the breeding boards
  • If it works for you that's great, don't worry about it then. Like I said just don't compare your AFPT per paper to other breeders. Since you know AFPT is artificially high for many of your mares just adjust your expectations.

You can still compare two mares bred to the same stud (or about as good as studs). The mare with the lower AFPT is your lower ability mare.
