New Appy filly

  • I'm getting a new filly! She's a year and a half and I'll be bringing her home in just a few weeks! She's going to be my new eventing horse as my current one is 17 and Annie isn't up for much over 3' and has back problems. The breeder thinks it is likely that she is homozygous Lp. I will have her tested this winter but was wondering what you guys thought!

  • I love appies! The one I had been around was very similar to a mule. Your cues had to to be exactly right or he was ignoring you. If you insisted that he do what you wanted with the wrong cue you went flying. But when the chips where down he came through every time. He saved my life once because he was smarter than the average horse I rode. <3 One of the neighbors had a couple of them as well. I did not ride them, but there always seemed to be a bit more discussion with them then with the QHs. :P <br />

  • She seems to have nice movement on her.
  • She is really nice and smooth. Congrats.
  • I met her sire and was stunned speechless by him. He's homozygous Lp and other than his color you would think he was a top end warmblood. He's just shy of 17hh and competed in eventing and dressage. Super mellow, and all of his foals are amazing. I wasn't planning on buying a foal, I was going to breed Annie, but there were several foals that were worth looking at. For her price she was far and away the best deal. Her edge over the others was the tiniest bit of attitude. I'm a sucker for a girl with attitude!

  • OMG. I'm so excited! I'm going to pick up Glitter this weekend! Dad and I are driving up on Saturday and back on Sunday. I will post pics when she gets here but I'm absolutely bouncing off the walls!
  • I would think not LpLp but lacy blankets are hard to say on. Any info on the dam?

  • She's a varnish roan by her picture. I will see her this weekend and hopefully get some good pics. Dad is Lp/Lp.
  • Gorgeous girl! I also have a yearling filly with lots of attitude to eventually take the place of my 20 year-old. Fun times! Congrats! :)
  • I meant any info on the dams genetics. :D

    Nice lines on her though.

  • Sweet she is pretty.
  • No info on dam's genetics. I will ask this weekend and will hopefully be getting good shots of all the breeding stock on the property. It's been ages since I've done photography and videos the farm owners are letting me have free reign on Saturday afternoon and Sunday before we leave.
  • She's home!!

  • The first three were at the breeders place as we loaded her this morning. The last is of the herd welcoming her when she was home and in her stall. She traveled well for the eight hour ride. Never panicked or broke a sweat. She was alert but not anxious. And she's already as tall as Annie!
  • Little update on Glitter: training is coming along wonderfully. Working on leading from both sides, lunging with posture and voice commands, feet, bathing, and even got a bit of sacking out done and put a surcingle on her fully tightened with no issues! Hoping soon to start her ponying so I can take her on trail.

Last note is that we are pretty sure she's night blind so we are thinking that she's likely homozygous for Lp.

  • Beautiful filly! Glad to hear she's coming along well :)
  • It's awesome that you know to watch for night blindness.

  • Beautiful girl, congratulations!
  • The breeder suspected homozygosity and I really hadn't thought about night blindness until I threw her hay in the shadows at night and she couldn't find it. Then it clicked. Last week she had dumped her water bucket and trampled it which was very out of character for her. We thought she was just like our obnoxious ones who like to destroy things but she hasn't been like that since we have had her. I told my dad and he said she has not been able to find her hay at night with him either. It won't be an issue because we stall our horses at night but it is definitely an indicator of homozygous Lp!
  • Another homozygous indicator has appeared since we've had some snow... She has horn colored hooves on her front two (solid colored) feet. Everyone's hooves got polished up nicely last week and I noticed her hooves. Also we finally got the new barn up and we have lights on timers that come on when we feed so she is having no issues finding her hay anymore! And I will have to take a picture of her next to our cutting bred qh mare. Glitter makes the old girl look like a pony!
  • Maybe you could consider having a color genetic test done. It will either confirm the suspicion or rule it out.
  • Wow! Have you measured her lately? I'm curious to see how tall she is.
  • Haven't measured her but she's just about the same height as our 16hh Draft mix. She also towers over our old 30 year old QH mare who is 14hh in front and 14.2 behind. I haven't had the spare cash to gene test her but since we've had snow I noticed her front hooves (the two without white markings) are shell coloured. This is another homozygous Lp indicator! She has less trouble with night feeding now as the new barn has outside lights on timers which come on when we do our night feed. She hones right in on the hay piles!
