Freezing Temperatures, Power Out, Gas And Diesel Hard To Get, Food And Water Hard To Get, etc.
  • So things have not been good. We have broken record temperatures and ice and snow buildup here in Texas. In fact it's snowing good now. Lots of wreaks, trees down, and power lines down pretty much everywhere one way or another. Power has been out since Sunday (some since Thursday, a week today) and C-TECH said yesterday they didn't know we didn't have any power even though our neighbor called 2 day's before and told them...unbelievable....trying to find things is crazy hard if not impossible cause it's either bought out too quickly or it's gone bad. Gas stations are closed and once open run dry before you know it. We are at Walmart right now (the last big store to open) but like they have much...anyway's I'm not going to be on for some time because power and phone lines are down and phone battery is precious and can't charge it with the car (I can when we head home but that's it) because gas and diesel are precious right now. This also was the first night we didn't sleep in the cold because we were finally able to get our generator running enough for two heaters.

I got to go but just thought I'd let you guy's know that real life's is freezing cold and crazy right now and it's going to be awhile before I'm able to come back.
  • The Texas disaster was on the front page of the Times this morning. Makes me so mad because it was so preventable. Pure greed caused so much suffering. >:(

Much love to you and our other texas members. Warmer weather can not come soon enough.

  • Wow, really? I can definitely say everyone is feeling it. I sure can my asthma hates me right now. I haven't used my inhaler in YEARS, I'm carrying it with me wherever I go just in case. Hopefully things warm up soon but it's nowhere in sight right now. :(( Getting propane now so good feelings. Was lucky to get a little bit of gas, some water and some groceries. Didn't get everything we needed but not complaining, every little bit is nice. Happy that we used to live in Nevada cause we have warm clothes and blankets for days that we are using all at once! Don't know how many more day's we can run our generator but we'll see when we get there. Just hope the power comes back on soon. I'm dreaming of waking up to it.
  • Praying for you.
  • Just some tips,
turn off your main water valve if you think there's a chance of pipes bursting from freezing
if you've a little camping tent you can set that up on top of your matress and drape some blankets over it and make a nest inside it to help provide a warm space
good luck and hopefully it gets better soon!
  • From what I am reading, the problem is that much of the power grid wasn't winterized. In any case, I hope that everyone stays safe and gets power back as soon as possible. You guys are in my thoughts.

This brings back memories of my grandma, she lived 5 miles out in the country outside Deming in New Mexico. She had her water well winterized with insulation wrapped around the tank and pipes. The propane tank must have had some winterizing too. She would run the tap on nights she knew was going to get cold. She would just have enough of a drip going so the water wasn't sitting still to freeze.
  • Hoping things will get better for you there! We live in West Texas and have been getting bad ice and blowing snow here as well. It hit only 4 degrees and even our car froze and broke down, so we haven't had a car for days now and have to walk up in the cold to get to the stores, the power has held here so far, but the number of car wrecks have been terrible! Our family had also literally just moved to Texas only a month ago too and so weren't really prepared for the storms, ice and snow either. We are praying for a warm up very soon too!

  • @Wolvevenfrost you've been in my thoughts all day, I hope power comes back for you and asap. I can't imagine the freezing and suffering you're going through! I'm in San Antonio and it's starting to feel like the beginning of the pandemic all over again.
  • Power outages are annoying at the best of times, but add that to a place where cold, snow and ice aren’t a norm and it’s a different kettle of fish.

Here are my tips for the cold. Wear fuzzy leggings under a pair of jeans, fuzzy is preferable, but workout leggings will work in a pinch, so will sweat pants but they don’t fit as well. Sometimes I wear two pairs of leggings under my jeans. Fuzzy socks with a pair of normal socks over the top. Tucking your shirts into pants. Wearing multiple shirts. Then there’s the obvious, gloves, hats that cover your ears and scarves. Hoods will work if you don’t have a good hat. I consider scarves a essential item in cold weather. Make sure your window blinds are closed, pinning a sheet or blanket over the windows helps as well. A lot of heat is lost through windows, because they seep cold air. A rolled up towel in front of doors going outside. I’m praying they get the power back on for you shortly.
  • Hang in there @Wolvevenfrost and @HorseAngel, I hope that the power gets back online soon and the weather warms up. I'd definitely agree with all of the tips people have been offering thus far, stay layered as much as possible and reduce ways for heat to escape. Keep warm and be careful out there on icy roads and sidewalks.

  • I have a cousin right not in Ft. Worth TX and she is giving us some updates. Some people have already given a bit advice, so I thought maybe something from farther up North, where -52C is a real thing.

    1. Turn off the main water and open the taps ...empty them if you can .... but as your out of power in some places not sure how this would work, this includes the hot water tank... that baby will freeze and burst. If you can, wipe out the bath tub and collect the water there, you have water for washing. We had to remind my cousin that she wasn't in Alberta anymore and that the houses are not insulated for this weather. Many places may have copper piping and that doesn't bode well against freeze up.

    2. Socks ... make sure you are wearing clean ones, try not to double up on them to much because as your feet sweat, it creates a pocket that can in fact chill your feet... dry socks, if you can keep your feet warm it helps immensely.

    3. No denim ... denim doesn't breath, sweat pants and leggings ... layer up... you don't want to trap moisture against your body.

    4. Cover every window and as it gets colder start to move into a "main" room. Close all the doors so that you are heating a smaller area. For those without power ... invest in some clay flower pots and tea candles ... lighting the candles and putting them on a plate and then the flowerpot over, does in fact work. Do not leave unattended though.

    5. Sleeping under multiple blankets, but remember not to "tuck" yourself in really tight ... you want a small amount of air between you and the blanket, it warms up and insulates you. Wear a hat, cover your head ... the amount of heat that you loose out the top of your head is immense. Don't forget your pets ... Few years back the back furnace in our house went, which meant one side of the house had no heat ... temps dropped to -45C without the wind, it registered a whopping -22C in our bedroom, but we have five dogs that insist they sleep with us ... we actually brought the temp up to -10C with those guys sleeping with us, under the blankets in a small room.

    6. If you have a gas stove, use that to heat the area ... (we have a gas stove and hot water tank, we also have a wood burning stove, for just these reasons of cold and no power)

    7. For the car, not much I can say, but to disconnect the battery and bring it in the warm area. Batteries will freeze. The rest may have to be sorted out with a mechanic, depending on how bad it froze. Usually for us its bring the battery warm it up and then get someone to "boost " it .... but we are winterized up here and our freeze ups are due mostly to whoops forgot to plug the block heater in. If your car is still running, piece of cardboard between the grill and radiator to min wind and keep the engine warm ... again monitor.

    8. If you still have power and a washer and dryer, run the dryer ... warm up some clothes putting them on, but leave the dryer door open afterwards. If it gets really bad you can disconnect the hose so the warm air is in the house ... but again you need to monitor.

Not sure if this coming to late, but hopefully it helps a little. Just stay dry and warm, and layer up. Watch our for sweating cause that will chill you. Hopefully they get it all sorted out. Stay safe.

  • Something a friend of mine mentioned to me today was that you can make a terra cotta heater by placing a candle down, stacking several bricks in a circle around it, and setting a terra cotta plant pot upside down over the top of the lit candle. The terra cotta holds and disperses heat pretty well if you sit close enough, and you can have several going at once if you have the components.

  • Thank you @CrowsnestRidge and @Corvus! We do know how to layer and keep the heat in thankfully as we have lived in Minnesota and Alaska for a few years lol, but it was all still very helpful advice! Didn't think about the car batteries freezing though, so thanks for that tip as well! And the terra cotta heater thing is really neat too, might have to try that sooner than later.

  • Praying for you. I remember when I was young, 20 years ago and we had the worst power outage from an ice storm province wide. Luckily for us my parents had a wood stove and running water. The same thing happened, the power grids crashed. We were out with no power for almost 8 weeks. Went to bed with the chickens and got up with the rooster to do chores on the farm. Never fun without power for even a few days.
Hope you don't have your power out as long as we had.

  • I actually learned about the taps and hot water tank when my husbands family in Colorado got a freak cold snap. We have plastic pipes and rubber, never even though about copper until his mom's pipes burst in the wall and the hot water tank froze and popped. Never even crossed my mind that a house wouldn't be insulated for that .... one of things you learn.

I remember that Ice Storm, that was January 1998. I had family members that went east side to help get the power lines back up, we sent blankets and food hampers with them for donations.

  • Prayers for all in this cold mess going on. Stay safe.
  • Ok so things have FINALLY warmed up! ❤❤

ALL ice and snow are gone! It's back in the 60's and it's sooooo nice! I love the snow and it's the big main reason I want to move back to Nevada but not when I don't have protection from it!

All these tips are great and we already knew from Nevada and we actually used 95% of these to stay warm. I had 1 pair of gloves, 2 bennies, 3 shirts, 4 pants, and 5 socks on. All fluffy and fuzzy. I had 5 to 9 blankets on top of me (all thick and warm because Nevada is cold in winter lol) each night. Generators were....a pain. We had to rely on a small 40+ year old generator that hasn't run in YEARS to just stay running to run a couple heaters. Our 2 year old huge Generac?, nothing. The thing is useless so away it goes for something that works. My grandpa is over 70 and knows when something is no good so that's sad and disappointing that a 2 year old generator is gone over a 40+ year old Honda lol.

We went to the Fire Department yesterday to get some food and water and found out that it's not going to be until APRIL 1ST that we may get power back to our area! ~X( Why!? Idk but it's bull. Been out for a week already but hey it's okay apparently to them. Towns have power but people out in the country naw they can live...huh, I don't the full story on the power statewide but still that's ridiculous...I don't know when we'll get phone lines and service back but I don't think it'll be anytime soon either.

Things have gotten much better but it sucks not having power or phone lines or service.

We are also going back to work again today so off I go.

But just to let you guy's know thing's are improving.
  • April!? That is just horrendous! I hope they properly fix your power grid. This is unacceptable.
