Public breeding etiquette?
-
I have decided to start using some public studs and I'm just wondering, how many times do you use the same stud? Do you use him until you get an intact foal, or do you try a few times and then move along? Just wondering what the proper etiquette is there, if there is any. Thanks!

There is no etiquette that I’m aware of, since the owner of the stud can’t make “rules” for a horse offered at public stud.
I’ve used the same stud multiple times. -
We've had people, in the past, who used all of a stallions public live breeding slots. That was kind of rude, because no one else was able to use the horse for live cover after that. It's been a while since I've seen that, though.

Whenever I find a public stud that I know I want to use all of his breeding slots I PM the owner to see if I can put him in my pasture for a day and then return him. Usually I'll pay whatever the amount would be for each breeding upfront and then send him home with a buddy of the owner's choosing. Since I don't do this very often it doesn't bankrupt me, but I would not recommend doing this if you are wanting to use him every season.

Some people do get salty if you use all the slots from a stud, though technically there is nothing in the rules to stop you from doing that.
We strongly advise people not to borrow horses from each other. Accidents have happened. If you are going to loan a horse you should have them pay a pay the entire prize you are willing to lose the house for. Then they can sell the horse back to you for that price minus any breeding fees. If you paid 8 mill for a stud don't loan them for less than 8 mill for example.Post edited by Ammit at 2021-03-17 04:44:08Need to contact me? Read this first.

I generally stick to one breeding unless he has something I REALLY want or I find an additional mare that would suit him. Lately I've been trying to branch out a little and I've gotten a few keeper from outside studs without really trying haha.Home of Kalluchin Warmbloods and Drafts

I never thought about it before but I'd say there's nothing wrong doing at least a few. You're paying extra for public breeding and the owner put him up for public breeding so it seems like they should not do that if they don't want people breeding to him. Leave at least a few spots to be kind but who wants to breed and not get an intact foal (unless you're specifically breeding for show horses, of course).

Thanks everyone!
