New Horse June 26 2014!
-
I am getting a new mare on Thursday! She is sort of a rescue from a neglect/breeding/hoarding situation. Good owners/breeders who ran into health issues of their own over the past few years and just couldn't keep up with all their horses. They asked Animal Control for help with rehoming them.
She is maybe a little funny looking, reg name is HF Merry Time (check her out on all breed)
She is a Buckskin Splash Homo Appaloosa. Lots of varnish and two blue eyes.
I will be renaming her so if anyone has any good suggestions, please let me know! (reg name and barn name)
I updated ABP with her pic and a pic of each parent. Not adding pics here unless its requested, I think allbreed is pretty easy to navigate! Any issues just let me know and I can post pics here.
She is 14.2, 8 years old. Unknown training, at least halter trained but may be more. There was 47 horses for sale and they weren't clear on what ones were trained and what ones weren't, though the ones who were trained also were shown.

Well here she is:
http://i61.tinypic.com/33bkg8g.jpg (Tried getting the pic to show here but it wouldn't so you'll have to cick the link)
I was told that she was easy to catch but we had some trouble with catching her. She wasn't running away and definitely not scared, just keeping one step ahead of us so we couldn't get a rope on her neck/head. We were able to open the gate from the pasture to the arena and have her walk into the arena so we were in a smaller area and no other horses in the way. We cornered her and spent about 10 min petting her and moving in closer. As soon as I got the rope around her neck she knew she was caught. She let me halter her no problem. She is VERY gentle on the halter, as soon as the rope starts moving any direction she follows without being tugged on. She's a very close walker though so we are going to have to work on that. She picked up all 4 feet and held them briefly for me (until I put them down, no kicking at all). Her feet are awful right now so will be getting the farrier out this week. I think they said it has bee 2 years since they had anything done with them.
On a scale from 1-10 for spookiness she is absolutely 0. She didn't care about anything we did. She has an awful shabby little appy tail so I tied a bunch of twine in it for her to keep the flies off and she just stood as I did. Some little girls came running into the barn where she was tied and she just looked at them.
All together I am really pleased with her. I am hoping the catching issue was just because she doesn't know me yet and she had only been dropped off by the ACO 1 hour before I got there.
She gets along amazing with the other horses, you would never know she was new. Not a scream or kick from the bunch. She was just in the herd grazing when I got there as if she had always been there! There is at least 30 other horses.
I hope I get used to her eyes soon... That is one thing I really don't like is horses with blue eyes.. It just looks wrong to me!
Oh, and name suggestions please!! I am thinking of calling her Image, but would like to think of a better reg. name for her too!

Congratulations! She is lucky to have such a good, new home. :)

I've always disliked blue eyes. Found them creepy. My horses eyes are blue. They started out a darker blue but have faded over the years. I have gotten used to them but still find them wierd on other horses.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes

Think! - It's not illegal yet. -
What a lovely horse! My dream horse is a Buckskin Splash Appaloosa haha. And I like blue eyes, although I'll say hers looks a bit scary in that photo lol.ID - 160680

Very pretty girl. I'd be tempted to call her Whiskey after her sire.

She's got some great breeding! Happy you guys have taken her on and are giving her the care she needs. Unfortunate about her previous situation. She's a pretty gal.
Do you have any specific plans for her?Imation Stud ID# 2609

Thanks guys, sorry I haven't been on in forever! I think I am going to name her Weedo's Perfect Image OR Weedo's Wild Imagination. I have been calling her Image anyway. She is doing well, still very sore on gravel. I have saddled and bridled her. Took the saddle like a champ and I got my hopes up thinking she may have some work on her.... But she had definitely never had a bit in her mouth. She was good about it but kept getting her tongue under it and chomping a lot. After about 5 min or so she did settle into it. I hope to get some better pics soon... Juggling 2 horses, my dogs, keeping up the house, work, and a toddler is a lot of work! Haha!
My only plans for her is to be my "pet". WTC in an arena and on trails.. Some jumping... swimming in the quarry... Maybe one fun show each spring. I am more into just enjoying my horses as pets than competing with them.Hajinc - 16226Thanked by 1Raina -
Oh I hope I didn't insinuate that I was expecting her to be a show horse! Was just curious what you wanted to do in your future together. :)Imation Stud ID# 2609

I do not believe you can change her registered name.
EDIT: I just have to reiterate again just have fantastically bred this mare is.Post edited by Ammit at 2014-07-26 10:29:10Need to contact me? Read this first.

ApHC will allow owners to change a horse's name so long as it has no offspring, hasn't been shown/raced and a couple other minor things. There's a name change application on their website.Imation Stud ID# 2609

I know my sister changed her AQHA's name when she got her.. I still haven't looked into it, not a high priority, especially because I am not planning on breeding/showing her at all. At least not now.
Thanks Ammit, means a lot coming from you!
Her feet are coming along and she isn't limping anymore. I have started lunging her (5-10 min of walk at a time, working on "whoa" and changing direction).
I have saddled her and I am sure she has been saddled before. But not bridled. She is good for it now but was chomping for a solid 10 minutes the first time.
My friend got on her (well laid across her back) a couple times the last time we were out. She was pretty tense at first but settled quickly. I think she will be a breeze to train, probably because of her good breeding. I so cannot wait to start riding her and really getting to know her.
Every time I work her I am amazed at the speed she picks up on lessons and how calm and smart she is. She really thinks things through and doesn't just lose her mind when she gets confused/scared/etcHajinc - 16226
