If I get a sa/- or a -/sa, and put a satin gene on him, will he still be generation 1?
And can I put a strand on him even though one side says /- or /-

If you create a horse it has no parents ; IE a foundation horse he will always be gen 1 ; those are the horses that can be modified to have any gene or remove any gene with either GMT's or R/L cash
You can add or remove any gene. it will not change his Generation JUST his genes

Step 1: decide what you want the genetics to be
Step 2: try to find a foundation that is as close to what you want as possible so that you don't have to spend as much on them
Step 3: budgeting time!
for the Satin gene you have three options:
option a) buy it with IRL money for $10 per copy
option b) pay someone else to buy it with IRL money; this will cost you about 1,000,000hbs per copy
option c) buy it with Gene Modification Tokens(which can be bought with Investment Vouchers) in the Gene Mod Lab; this will cost you about 2,500,000hbs per copy.
Step 4: choose what you seem best for you and start working towards that decision.

Dont forget ; this horse must have NO offspring in game to modify it and I believe it must be under 10 years old

There are always many many foundation(gen1) stallions for sale. Rank specials are a good start as they often have extra goodies, plus are perfect, or Ex perfect producers. Then as long as he has no decendants, you can add satin to him

Normally people paid real money for a sasa foundation. It is not too likely someone will sell you one but straws and second-gen horses are often available. :)

Thanks, everyone, for your advice. if I use a straw and breed a foundation horse with it and breed the foal to a foundation mare, that will make it a second generation, wouldn't it? so yes, I'd be better off just using a gen 2 rather than using straws? And I lucked out on one of my breedings and got a sasa 2nd gen, he will be perfect, now I just want a mare. i should have a few, i just need to hunt.

2nd gen x 2nd gen = 3rd gen
___________Foundation x Foundation = 2nd gen

Two foundations create a second gen
Two second gens create a 3rd gen
Two 3rd gens create a 4th gen and so on
