I'm having a go at building my own line and I was just wondering how you prevent breeding family? I currently have two stallions and four mares (two for each stallion) and I figured I'd breed their babies to each other.. but after that, who do I breed to? they'd all be mixed up?

You need to start with a much larger pool of foundations.

Like how large? I've never built a line so I have no idea :P

I've been known to collect upwards of 5-6 foundation stallions, and as many mares as I could find to get a good start. Once I got a "keeper" foal from a mare, I yum her to make room for a new foundation mare. And then I slowly add a new foundy boy or two each season and retire some of the older ones. That way I continually have fresh blood coming in.

often times you can even find foundations that other people put up for stud or brood that suit your needs and you can breed to them and hope for the best at getting a good keeper foal!
