Gelding older stallions - Worth it?
  • I have an EMBARRASSING number of intact stallions that are AGA or worse. Cause shiny colors.
It's a pain to sort through, though, so I'm considering going through and purging and gelding. The only problem is that is going to take FOREVER.
I will do it though if there's some benefit to it. IDK if theres any showing/training bonus that would matter past a certain age.
  • I don't know the exact numbers; only Ammit knows that. However, I think that neutering a horse may add a small fraction of a point to each training's addition to the show score. I have also noticed that neuters tend to go through about an additional game year of training before leveling off.

So, the earlier horses are neutered, the more they benefit in terms of showing results. However, neutering older stallions that you aren't using and don't plan to use can certainly take them off the stallion list so your search for potential sires goes more quickly and you don't accidentally breed to someone you've decided isn't worth it.

  • I geld all older stallions that I retire to be show horses, mainly so they don't show up on the list when I do a stallion search when I'm trying to decide what stallions to use for a given generation.
  • You should deffinatly geld them. And congrats on your path to becoming a higher quality breeder. :D

  • And it might take time to ho through and geld, but think about how much easier it will be to organize and deside on your breedings in the future! I geld every boy I will not be using, Even the one that turn 20, just so they wont turn up in the search.

  • I have been trying to do the same thing quiet and I have either auctioned or kept for showing. It is taking forever to go through them too. So I really feel for you. But I have noticed my show bonus has improved.
