Is this chimerism?
-
Hey there, I'm super new to the game and haven't even begun to look into genetics or even breeding yet, but this guy stopped me in my tracks.
What am I looking at here? Is this chimerism?
OfMH RSp Pumpkin Spice 4 -
It has been detected in him, I'm still learning myself as this wasn't on the game since I was playing and stopped two years ago. So it is fairly new to me as well.
-
Yep, you can see he has two sets of genes.
That is chimerism and it has a 50% chance of passing to his foals.Post edited by Mensie at 2021-08-25 15:23:04Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056 -
If I understand right though, he doesn't have a 50% chance of passing chimerism to his foals, just each set of DNA has a 50% chance of passing. That can also be changed in the gene mod lab I think, so one set of DNA is more heritable than the other.
-
Thanks CLynnRose. I misunderstood but that makes a bit more sense to me.Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056
-
So what does it mean when it says:
inheritance chance 50%? -
@kennahill1989 It says that under each set of DNA because each set has a 50/50 chance of being selected to pass genes on to the foal. Within that chosen set, each allele also has a 50/50 chance of passing on, just like any horse. :)
-
Ok so use chimerism for example would that be passed on if both parents have it? Or still only 50/50?
-
The chance of it passing on when both parents are chimeric is still extremely small. A chimera is formed when two foals are started at breeding and merge within the dam's womb. Since twins are very rare in horses, and even more unlikely to develop correctly, a chimera is accidental and not genetically determined.
Nightphoenix recently posted this explanation of twins in horses that may help you understand more about why twin foals are seldom born.

Chimerism is when a "twin" absorbs another " twin" in the womb and has both sets of DNA ; given the odds ( or lack there of ) of horses actually having twins ; and then the additional odd of the Chimera ; you are actually looking at less than 1 in 1000 or so of having a chimera foal. The odds are a little better in game than real life but still in that range :)

Thank you all for the info! I'm kinda bummed that I can't breed for it, it sounds like it is just a random roll of the dice?
-
Ok thank you for explaining it to me
-
@OfMoosehorn, multiple people across the servers breed for it, but I see it as an very unsatisfactory way of breeding myself, as it's a huge roll of the dice to get chimeras, more disappointments during the breeding season than normal. If you wish to try, you do get a bigger chance with a full herd of chimera foundations.
-
Chimera x chimera = about a 1% chance of a chimera foal. Any other cross is pretty much impossible.I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
-
@bluchrystals @Nightphoenix Thank you, that's very useful. Is there anyway to find horses with chimerism in the search?
-
Quite a few of the Rank Specials are chimeras. Like your Pumpkin Spice, White Wedding, Liberation Actualization, Bring Back the Sun, Pieces of Eight and more (just have those off the top of my head). You can search those by name (search criteria: Tattoo).

Even the Basic Sort and Advanced Sort options do not list chimera. This is a relatively new development in the game, still less than a year old, I think. Certainly not much more than that, although time does get away from me. Ammit might have an idea if there might be a plan to add it in the future, but I'm pretty sure there are other things higher on the priority list.
-
I had a chimeric stallion in pasture with a number of chimeric mares for quite a few game years. He has since aged out of the game. Of his 365 foals, there was only a very small handful of chimeras. Here's a search of his get, if you're interested in checking them out.

If you go to search ; i think on the second page there is abox to check or uncheck for chimera or non chimera > uncheck the Non and you ll see all of the chimeras in game ; uncheck lined on the first page and you ll only see the foundations ; which will give you an overview of the Herd Helpers that carry it :)

Thanks, annismyrph. I hadn't discovered that.
-
Regardless, that horse is COOL! =P~

Haha thank you! I love him!

Ammit has said in the past the chimera mares are more likely to pass chimera onto their offspring.
