Inconsistent Foals Discussion
-
Hey everyone! I wanted to get some opinions on whether or not you keep inconsistent foals from your 2nd Generation and beyond. This goes for show horses and breeders. Why or why not? Do you GMT their consistency if you do keep them?
Hoping to get as many responses as possible with as many opinions as possible. Thank you :)Post edited by Mensie at 2021-09-05 06:59:40Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056 -
I keep them all LOL ; Inconsistant horses are just that ; 1 day they show like a champion the next day they show like a pig. I ve found it pretty much evens out in the end tho.Thanked by 1Mensie

I dont mind if my show horses are inconsistent. I only cull show horses once they can be auctioned for lifetime payout.
I GMT consistency on special foals or my colts I need to further my lines. I generally geld/spay all other inconsistent horses as I don't want to keep breeding more. I had previously not culled them so there are inconsistent lines in my older horses that I am slowly culling from pastures.Thanked by 1Mensie -
I don't care about inconsitency at the fojndation level, but I will geld all offspring that are inconsistent. I don't want the inconsistency to get worse in a line.Thanked by 1Mensie

It honestly just depends for me. If I’ve culled out based on everything else and I’m just really looking for a reason to get rid of a horse I’ll go by consistency. I do require all my breeding colts to be consistent, mares not so muchThanked by 1Mensie

I don’t really care about consistency in any of my horses, foundation, breeding, or show; it all evens out in the end IMO and I haven’t noticed a huge difference in final point totals when culling my older show horses.I mostly play on mobile so I can't usually see signatures!
Breeding Pearl Warmbloods, Little Red Riding Ponies, and... whatever else suits my fancy lol.Thanked by 1Mensie -
I also keep inconsistent horses in my breeding and show horses, I don't really mind if they have some variation week to week so long as it evens out in the end. When I do look at show horses, I mostly just care if they've levelled off in a good place or notPost edited by CrowsnestRidge at 2021-09-05 10:31:28ID #265959 | He/him | Breeding Black Satin, Liver, and Grullo Arcturus Horses | Licenses: Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Axiom Blue and GreenThanked by 1Mensie

Inconsistency is not really that bad. It can make it a bit harder to get intact foals, but thats about it. I keep everything to show, don't mind it in mares, and GMT any stallions (but I keep a max of 5 stallions per line, per generation).ID 195859Thanked by 1Mensie

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. They were all very helpful. Looks like I'll keep them all at least to show from here on out.Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056

Inconsistency is just annoying to me for some reason, so I don’t like to keep inconsistent breeding stock. When I’m culling show horses, inconsistent ones are the first to go!I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!Thanked by 1Mensie

Testing already weeds out the majority of your inconsistent foals already.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Thanks Ammit! So does that mean that the inconsistent ones that are left have other qualities that (the algorithm? tests?) are better than the inconsistency is bad?Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056

No, it just means they were not inconsistent enough to get culled by the test you used.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I cull all inconsistent foals unless they're super special. If they're really nice I'll GMT them consistent. I adopted this method because I'm trying to keep my numbers down and it seems like a reliable way to make sure I only keep the best of the best.
-
When I started I didn't pay it much attention, but I absolutely cull for inconsistency now, both breeding and show stock. I end up with more good horses in the long run, and it makes the best use of my barn and pasture space.
-
I tend to cull them (or GMT them) just because inconsistency lowers PT score, and is actually heritable, so it will kinda lower the average PT.
Plus, like @Nightphoenix it just freaking bugs me for some reason. ~X( -
I keep inconsistent fillies, but if I keep a colt for a stallion I'll usually gmt him consistent
-
I don’t cull based on PT I’ve had mare’s with low PT scores test aga or superior other mares with higher scores. I don’t worry about consistency outside of my bootstraps and stallions and usually in both cases I either ignore it or GMT it.
I make a point to keep all of my spelded babies each season. So I keep all of my inconsistent babies. They might not always make the best show horses but they usually more than pull their own weight.
