Update to my crazy book writing journey
-
Time is really getting away from me lately with everything going on -
1. Work is crazy because we are ridiculously short-staffed (just like everywhere else) and we are running with a skeleton crew to care for our individuals on all three shifts, so more and more OT for me - yuck! We keep getting new admissions and losing staff to better paying, safer jobs. I can't blame them, we are killing ourselves with no support from management, nothing but negative feedback, and everyone is stressed/freaking out regularly (both staff and residents).
2. I'm crushing it in my second semester of college, maintaining a 4.0 for the moment - never thought I could do that, but here we are and I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. It is a Teacher Education program, so the classes are pretty interesting. I'm DREADING Math for Elementary Teachers which starts at the end of October. It is accelerated learning so I'm taking two courses each eight weeks, which makes me a full-time student on top of everything else.
3. My first book, 'The Ghost's Host', is finished with the majority of the editing and the editors have been pleased with everything, thus far. The release date is slowly creeping up - January 1st will be here before I know it! I'm still struggling to get into Twitter and Instagram, but I've got my website and my Facebook page up and running. There hasn't been much spare time to keep writing, but I'm slowly working on about 8 different projects.
and the biggest thing...
4. The publisher has given me a contract for my second novella, 'Wildflower'! I am completely enamored with the main character, Lily, and the book follows her life from the initial tragedy (a plane crash in the wildest parts of the Ozarks) as a seven-year-old to her survival in the mountains and on to the chaotic events that lead her back into civilization. I cannot wait to share her story with everyone! It looks like the publishing date for this one will be the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023. You can read an excerpt from 'Wildflower' here https://www.cathleencollins.com/wildflower

Man, it's cool following your journey, it's nice to see someone else make it. If we read the excerpt should we put a review somewhere? I hear early reviews can help a lot.Licensed for:

@boredaf - I'm not sure how that works, so I would say hold off on the reviews!
This whole process has been unreal. I still can't believe BSB wanted to take a chance on me, especially since these are just novellas. Every morning I have to remind myself that this is actually happening.
Now that Wildflower is under contract, I REALLY need to work on Broken Branch. That one is my horse-related novel with lots of emphasis on the horses. It needs some significant rewriting because I followed my story until about halfway in, where I just wandered away from the point like a distracted puppy. It kind of turned into a 'Hallmark' romance (YUCK!) but I'm so pleased with the characters and their interaction that I almost don't mind the sweet storyline. I have a related novel started based on a few of the minor characters in Broken Branch, but that one is going to require some serious concentration to really give the storyline the depth it needs.
Of course, I'm also in the middle of a set of 5 stories to follow The Ghost's Host. They are supposed to be short stories that I can put together in a novella, but I got a little out of control and the first one is already 70 pages, so it might end up being a full novel of 'short' stories with a paranormal twist. I have an idea for a follow-up combining the characters from those 5 stories in a funny, save-the-world situation. So much to do and so little time! I'll keep you guys updated as I get more info or post more excerpts.Specializing high quality dark horses with lots of chrome.

Man those plans sound awesome, I feel you on the distracted puppy bit. Sometimes the charecters just don't cooperate.
The ghost host universe sounds really good!Licensed for:

Or have the character insist on living in your mind. Can get annoying and distracting at times.Thanked by 1High Five Acres

For real! I cannot get my most recent character out of my head. Lily feels like my child and I'm ridiculously obsessed with her! I see her in everything, hear her in every song, think about how she would react in any given situation. I think constantly of how devastated I would be if other people don't love her in the way I do, then I realize she is my creation - no one will know her or love her in the way I do. It is very conflicting!Specializing high quality dark horses with lots of chrome.

For me, it's Friyazi Demonsbane that insists on living in my mind. lolThanked by 1High Five Acres

My first thought is absolute horror at someone getting that attached to a character it goes against everything I've learned. On the otherhand 1. I'm unpublished so what do I know. 2. I assume short stories are different in that you don't have to worry as much about carrying on long character arcs it's more about the plot? So flaws maybe aren't as important. 3. I tend to torture and kill characters with impunity (I primarily write fantasy with a strong horror element) I can't spare a character just because I like them so it's best to not.Licensed for:

@boredaf Actually, I would say short stories are even more about the characters and what they symbolize than the plot. The plot is just there to show the character's inner struggle. It's usually just a slice of the arc, and the midpoint that's usually right at the 50% mark in a novel is closer to the 75% mark in a short story. There isn't enough time to develop very plot heavy stories and the most important, profound turning points in a story always revolve around character anyway. Characters are embodied theme, most of all in a short work like a short story or character-rich poem.Thanked by 1High Five Acres

Ah quite true. I more meant that I as a reader would be more open to an extremely likable character in an action-packed short story whereas I may find them boring if I had to read several thousand pages of it (robert jordan was a beast). That's a matter of taste though I suppose. I also find your view on the relationship between character and theme fascinating. That made me think a lot...I think I would say character embodies concept and theme comes from character interaction, where the characters-as-concept intersect is where you would find theme. I think the characters would need to be one step removed for the theme to feel organic rather than like an opinion piece. That also lets you tackle a single theme from multiple angles.Licensed for:

@boredaf lol! It is always fascinating to see things from different perspectives and styles!
I killed off a few characters in Wildflower and they were harder for me to lose than I expected. I feel like seeing good people die (even of old age) is pretty affecting. I never liked books where the main character is a jerk or difficult to empathize with, or overly promiscuous, or flawed in some irredeemable way (of course what is irredeemable to me may be perfectly normal to someone else). Even when those types of books (or movies/shows) are really well done, I find myself feeling uncomfortably apathetic about them. When it comes to Wildflower, Lily has a boatload of really unpleasant things that happen to her, but she is strong and good, the kind of person I want to be or to be around. Her flaws are endearing and the book is written from her perspective. While she may outwardly seem unaffected or unable to reach, she shows the richness of her emotions in her way of thinking. That part comes right from me - I tend to appear calm and stoic when I am rioting inside, unable to express myself or my feelings in any way but on paper.
I find when I really focus on character development, I lose the beauty of character by overindulging in the details. I want the story, the character interactions, and the emotional development to allow the reader to feel what the character would be like if they were to meet. This is so much easier in novellas & short stories because you can create 'your own' character from the outline I draw. As someone who has spent 30 years writing poetry, I feel like less is always more!
I would love to be able to write an epic novel, but I don't think I ever could - not well, at least! I envy those who can, though. I know when I read substantial books (which I love) I tend to skip over significant chunks of text because I find it unnecessary to the plot. Lots of people who write super long novels could probably cut them in half unless you've got a huge number of characters, a generations-long story, or something with a complicated plot, but those types of books tend to have their own issues. This is part of the reason I'm having an issue writing the first book I intended to write. I'm overwhelmed with the complicated plot and the significant cast of characters. Just the back story alone is intimidating. Maybe once I get my land legs with the novel I finished, I can start to tackle the big one!Post edited by High Five Acres at 2021-09-21 01:28:35Specializing high quality dark horses with lots of chrome.

Glad you think so too, some people get so wiggy when they see opposing view points.
I follow that I cannot abide cheating/love triangle plots unless it's either intended to be a villain or some sort of misunderstanding. I'm actually reading a quite entertaining book called soulless with one scene of the love interest verbally going off on his rival, the joke being that everyone else involved knows the 'rival' is compleeeaately gay. Oh I've always liked that trope, it's a lot of fun to play with in multi-POV because you can have some characters appear completely different between their own POV, an outsider's POV and a close inner-circle pov.
Less is definitely more especially in horror, what kind of poetry do you write? I've not really notice this in my short stories (set in the same universe different characters) but I think I get what you're saying, the characters feel fleshed out to me because I know them but the reader probably does have more leeway with them than the ones in the novels.
Oh me neither, but I borrow techniques from the epic writers alot, or try to at least lol, Steven Erickson is a favorite, what I'm writing is more similar to dresden files in both length and content though. oh I could never skip anything (except particularly lurid romantic interludes) but that's defiantly true about cutting it in half and probably why the wheel of time got better when sanderson took over, no disrespect to jordan he was just from a different era.
Any way I can help, I've been told I handle large casts well?

Sorry it took me so long to respond, time has been flying, I'm just about to start my last week of the two classes for the first half of this semester (still have a 100% in both - yay!) October 26 starts the dreaded 'Math for Elementary Teachers' and 'Educational Psychology'. Things are moving along with the Ghost's Host - dedication/acknowledgments written, front and back matter ironed out, page proofs being made up - so this is the final stretch. Three more months till release!
@boredaf I'll definitely hit you up with some questions when I start tackling my big project. This one is more of a third-person limited perspective, so we shall see if I can pull it off. My first three (including the one that needs work) are all first-person. One that I'm 70 pages in on is third-person limited and I think I'm doing alright with it. As far as my poetry, I write all sorts of stuff from the dark and twisty, to the hopeful and inspiring. I've got 90 some pages (probably around 250 poems in total) written up but not edited. There aren't many publishers that publish poetry, but I'm working on that. Looking to submit something maybe in the next year or so, like a chapbook or an anthology. Who knows if I'll have time!
This is a beautiful, brittle life,
one that fractures at the slightest touch.
I have squandered more than my share,
nearly more than I can bear.
It peels back my thin skin,
exposing spine I never knew!
We've got the book cover just about set for Wildflower and I'm totally in love with it! I'll post it once things are finalized. :)
