Keep or Sell?
-
As a new player, I am wondering if it is best to keep all the horses that I generate, as a full barn generates more show income. I have a Freaky Friday horse, and it's difficult to breed to her, so I am considering selling her, but I am not sure if that is short-sighted.
Sorry if I come across as hogging the boards with my questions. There's a lot to learn here.Game number 273531

First , as ConfluenceStable says ; the only silly question is the one not asked.
Second why are you finding it difficult to breed to her ( your FreakyFriday) ?
I personnly find keeping ( and neutering ) as many as I can builds your show herd faster so you can make more HB's to buy more Barns and to support your breeding horse.
In general you need 2 or 3 ( most prefer 3 ) show horses for each breeding horse, and if you keep as many as you can ( esp if you are creating horses with points ) you ll be able to build stranger and faster :) -
The difficulty is the lethal white gene, which I found out the hard way when I bred with a horse that had one copy of frame. As I wrote in another post, I'm not sure how O/O works with the various splash genes. Part/most of the blame rests on me for not investigating the Freaky Friday HH more thoroughly before creating one.Game number 273531

As long as you don't breed her to a stallion with frame again, you should be fine. A couple of my foundation stallions have frame, and I'm just careful not to give them any mares with frame (although one did slip through once, whoops!).

I don’t think Frame is lethal when combined any type of Splash. Obviously hom Frame is lethal (except Freaky Friday) and I believe certain combinations of Splash 2/3/M are lethal, but there are multiple pages each of Splash 1 Frames, Splash 2 Frames, Splash 3 Frames and Splash M Frames if you look in the horse search.
If you’re looking for public studs, make sure to mark O as “Must Not Have” on the white markings tab in the horse search and you’ll be in the clear when breeding her to any of the resulting public studs.Post edited by FallenFarms at 2021-09-16 11:18:41Fallen Farms - Grigorian Warmbloods - ID 264430

You don’t have to keep all of the horses you generate. You can sell high-pointed horses to get some $$ that in turn you can use to make more pointed horses, or save and buy more barn space.
As for whether to keep your freaky Friday mare or not, the question I’d ask is what are your breeding goals? Does her color help you in any way, or is she just a pain for you? If she doesn’t fit your breeding goals she would be worth more if you sold her than if you kept her as a show horse. And if you do sell her and realize it was a mistake that herd helper will come around again. Freaky Friday’s don’t fit my breeding goals so they never stay in my barn long.
Figuring out what you are trying to breed for will help you out the most because it gives you direction. Any goal would help for that matter because you can make decisions based on whether they help or hinder your current or long-term goals. :)Thanked by 1Treble -
The Freaky Friday herd helper shows up every Friday the Thirteenth, so if you want to sell your mare, there will eventually be a chance to make another when you've learned more about the game.
This is indeed a complex game, but this is a friendly community. Our major competitor is the complexity of the game, modeled on the complexity of real life. Because of this, we are not in competition with each other, which allows us to help each other out. Never hesitate to ask questions. We're always happy to answer them. -
I have a thing for black and white splash tobiano horses (love that Vault of Stars HH!), and I am not sure the frame gene promotes that. My secondary color interests are silver, black, bay, and roan. Is that enough for someone to go on?
The horse in question has a PT rating of 9.9 and is a consistent performer, so I am not sure I want to spay. Is it common to spay or geld simply because a horse is inconsistent?Post edited by Treble at 2021-09-17 09:20:56Game number 273531

not at all. 9.9 is a Perfect Foundation, most of the rank special herd helpers are 9.9, the major exceptions are the Exceptionals which are 10.4 ( producer & perfect )
H&J doesnt use the words "Paint, Overo or Pinto" they use the word "Frame" , following real world genetics. As long as you breed to a NON Frame horse your foals should be OK, Tobiano should be fine as well , just stick to less white. the more white a foal has the more likely you will get a lethal white foal, due to white mutations. The Breeding and Genetics guides in the FAQS User GUide will really help explain this ; i encourage you to read it and then come back with more questions :) -
A Freaky Friday horse would be worth more to sell to someone else as a broodmare, than for you as a show horse. They are currently going for about 12-25k that's a pretty decent chunk of cash. As a show horse it would take her whole life to earn that for you.
Some rank special heard helpers have very little value beyond being a perfect create. All washed up, Color With a Really Long Name, Shades of Pale, to name a few. Rank special herd helpers value is determined by how many players value them, and how many players want those genes in their herd, and how badly they want those genes, and how rare the herd helper is. Freaky Fridays are one of the more popular RS they aren't the most popular, but they are sought after. -
I’m more than happy to help you learn more about genetics! Please feel free to message me or join my Genetics chat room. I’ve done two posts in the Genetics section of the forum about how frame works if you’d like to look at those :)I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
