Difference between AI embryo and Embryo from egg?
  • I see that the AI embryo costs 5k to make and can be used later but it seems that the same is true for the "Embryo from egg". Can someone help me understand the difference between the two options?

    Thank you!

  • Seems like you are conflicting artificial insemination and embryo transfer. One puts semen in a mare to get her pregnate. Once takes an egg fertilized outside of her body and then implants it in her uterus.

  • I'm talking about from this page: https://www.huntandjump.com/et_createembryo.php

Both of these options result in an embryo that is then implanted in a mare but it says but one is 5k and one is 2k.

"Create an AI Embryo" says: Welcome to the ABSL's embryo transfer laboratory. This facility impregnates a mare using a straw. The resulting fertilized embryo is then harvested and placed in cold storage for implantation in for the future. This process costs 5,000 hb's. Additional fees will be charged during implantation and foaling.

"Create an Embryo From Egg": Welcome to the ABSL's embryo creation laboratory. This facility takes a previously collected egg and combines it with a straw to create a test tube embryo. This embryo can then be implanted into a surrogate mare during breeding season. It costs 2,000hbs to create a test tube embryo. Additional fees will be charged during implantation and foaling.

  • I suppose it just depends on whether you have the mare or maybe just have an egg that you purchased. So you can still make an embryo to transfer either way? Or if you wanted to mass flush your own mare and make many embryos from her to transfer. I guess the test tube embryo is cheaper because the cost to harvest the eggs would have already been charged.

  • The former is created inside the mare and then flushed. The second is from an already collected egg.

  • Ah, thank you both! So yes, the cost for one is cheaper but would not include the price of purchasing or flushing the egg.

  • Yup works out about the same but one is a two-step process.

  • Isn't it also true that breeding via AI gives you one foal per year, and, by using embryo transfer you can breed the mare every 5 days, and/or by harvesting (via embryo flushing) 8-14 eggs per season?

That is what decides me in reference to which type of breeding I choose. I have most of my mares in the pastures, but I keep one or two from each generation up in the barns so I can get a bit more 'hands on' every 5 days. That keeps me from having more foals than I can handle, and I have enough time at the end of the breeding season to get the foals sorted, tested and named, without driving myself nuts trying to keep up!

  • @ConfluenceStable That's actually something I wondered about since I've never had a premium upgrade. So you can use a straw on a mare, transfer the embryo, and still breed that mare again that year, even though you didn't pull eggs to fertilize? Because that made sense to me, since the mare doesn't have to carry to term and should be able to cycle again, I just wasn't sure if that's how the game worked.
  • @CLynnRose that is incorrect. You can flush mare every 5 days.

  • @Ammit Does transferring an embryo not count towards the foals-this-year count, just like a single egg flush doesn't? Because that's what the explanation sounded like to me and that's all I meant.
  • I collect an egg every 5 days til the end of the month (for embryo transfer) and then breed them live cover because it's a little bit cheaper.
