I see a lot of hom DP on hom chinchilla horses...
-
And I was wondering, does it actually make a difference? I wasn't figuring on adding DP to my chinchilla boy because I thought what's the point if DP only darkens red pigment and then chinchilla wipes it all away. But does DP make some minimal difference on black pigment as well? Or are people just gene modifying DP onto chinchilla horses so the line can also throw dark pigment offspring when chinchilla isn't homozygous? Same with regular sooty, any effect on black pigment at all?

DP shows on Bay, so if you have bay chinchillas, it will show. Plus DP sometimes gives you pretty dapples, or will make the S+ dapples standout.Thanked by 1Cavalynn

Sorry, duplicate post.Post edited by Humboldt at 2021-10-13 17:55:41

@Humboldt Thanks for your response! Still though, I thought DP only darkens the red parts of the bay coat, and that's the same part that chinchilla turns white, right? Cause if it can make some of that area come back as partly washed out black, that would be cool. I think then I'd add hom DP to my brown chinchilla gmt project.

I haven't done a side by side comparison but you could use the search to look at DP vs non DP chinchilla. It might give you a better idea of what things will look like. I breed Liver based, so I kicked most of the chinchilla out of my lines. My favorite were chocolate with chinchilla with satin as added bling!Thanked by 1Cavalynn

Chocolate chinchilla with satin sounds beautiful! I was thinking about going that direction with my brown chinchilla. I'm definitely going to add chocolate but I'm not sure I can afford satin as well. I love livers too, so it struck me as kinda funny when I realized I was almost turning what started as a silver black horse into what could be taken for a flaxen liver chestnut! Both red-based and black-based horses and they can look almost exactly the same.
I did spend a while using the search to compare chinchillas with and without DP and I couldn't really tell that there was any difference, that's why I came here to ask. There's usually a lot of other genes and white markings that can make it hard to tell as well.Thanked by 1Alianne -
Personally, to me it seems like DP is one of those 'bling' genes that you add just so you can say it's there and to add value to straws/eggs, like satin and S+. I know for my Chocolate Chinchilla line I added satin and DP even though it wouldn't be super noticeable because I like having those 'hidden' genes, plus it's a useful culling tool for when my quality is where I want it but I still have too many foals(colts).

@Alianne Those are beautiful horses! That makes sense that the extra bling genes are there mostly to add value to straws, though I can see the little bit of color the satin adds on Cacophony of Comets. I'm starting to really love that look, I think it's making me a fan of satin. But I don't think of S+ as just bling on chocolate chinchilla browns. I love what it does to the edge between the white and the chocolate, it makes it really nice and dapply. :)Thanked by 1Alianne

I love my DP Chinchilla's, can help make the dapples pop, plus I love it on my bays and brown watercolours, which are all mixed in with my chinchilla line lol! All the things must have DP lol!Thanked by 1Cavalynn

@Kintara, Thanks for your input! I agree, DP is a must in almost all of my lines, I was just wondering if I was being wasteful by wanting it in my chinchillas as well, but I guess not! I was almost glad when I thought I'd be able to save on the GMTs by skipping DP, but it looks like I'll be adding it to my chinchilla boy after all. I'm sure I wont regret the extra cost. :)

Chinchilla removes red pigment, which means adding DP is 100% not doing anything and while you can add it for foals is frankly kind of a waste of money.Need to contact me? Read this first.
