The Making of Morel - Transformation & Reveal (image heavy)
  • I had used the GMT lab a bit before, but Morel was my first major GMT project. I saved his picture throughout his transformation so I could look back at how much he changed. (For one, he was a she when I started. ;) ) I regret a little that I didn't save his very first picture as he was originally before I started. I was so eager to get pangare+ and mushroom on him while they were in the GMT lab that I forgot. But, he was an ordinary looking Cherry Drop, something like this:

    And now... for the transformation!

    image
^ After hom pangare+ and mushroom

    image
^ After hom rec. E to make chestnut and hom ND1

    image
    ^ After hom sooty+

    image
^ After het cream (this was the change that really made him what I wanted, and I could have been happy to leave it at that, but I just wanted a little more. :) )

    image
^ After satin (and white 3, though it doesn't really show yet)

    image
^ After white 20, which really made the white 3 speckle out beautifully. This could have been a good place to stop too, but because of the recent updates to breeder's clubs, had one more change in mind.

    image
    ^ After het appy

    image
    ^ After hom appy

... And now, the final result, after hom snowflake!

So here he is, my first foundation with satin, pangare+, hom sooty+, or white 3! I'm so happy with him. I'll also be offering straws for next season at 10k each. If you'd like a sneak peak at what he could throw for you, take a look at his first babies from last season. These are all out of livers and DP bays/buckskins:

And a link to the new boy:

  • Awesome combination idea! I love the transformation picks, and Cherry Drops are great Gmt projects!

  • He's gorgeous, and his first crop of foals are lovely. Thanks so much for recording and sharing his transformation in the GMT lab. It was fun to follow the changes.

  • I like cherry drops but I don't like them as GMT projects, I don't breed wild bays.

  • @Humboldt, Thanks! Me too, that combo very quickly became my favorite, maybe even more so than DP sooty+ brown buckskins. ND1 makes a big difference too. I love it when I can get a horse really dark on the topline and really light underneath with a nice dapply gradient in between.

@MiaMoo, Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the transformation. Yeah, Cherry Drops make wonderful GMT projects. I pretty much always want hom DP anyway and a Cherry Drop gives you a great head start.

@SandyCreekAcres, So glad you enjoyed following the transformation. :) At first I was just saving the pictures for myself, but then I thought they could make a really nice "debut" post. I really love this first crop of foals too, and I'm kinda kicking myself for altering and auctioning all the c/yellow papered ones. I should have kept them for some pretty show ponies, but I've never really gotten around to starting a proper show string. I've only haphazardly kept a few speldings and sometimes remember to show them. Those other foals were pretty enough I might have remembered to go look at them and show them more often.

@Forestshadow, I'm curious, if you don't like wild bays, why do you like Cherry Drops, but not as GMT projects? What would you do with them except GMT them? I don't care for wild bay either, it might actually be my least favorite gene in the game (though I recently found I don't hate it when it's with Onyx, especially if it's a really rich red), but Cherry Drops were the only hom DP foundations I had when the GMT lab sale was on. At first I was looking for a Freaky Friday, but then I figured getting rid of the wild bay wasn't so expensive, no worse than getting rid of the hom frame on a Freaky Friday. Actually, even though the wild bay wouldn't show on Morel, I gave him hom brown anyway so I can cross him with my true breeding blacks/silver blacks for some nice dark het browns. :)

Now that I've really started GMTing, I'm so excited for this next breeding season! I might actually pull some straws to use so I can get more than 50 breedings out of him. I've pretty much exclusively done pasture breeding in the past, except when I've been gifted straws. Now, maybe I'll even get a premium upgrade so I can flush my best hom DP mares for even more of those crosses...? ;)
