Write Your Own “Breed Standard”
-
This morning I was sorting through my auto breed foals, and had the idea of writing a “breed standard” in the same style that judges use in conformation shows. So here’s one for my Little Red Riding Ponies! Disclaimer:
I am in no way a professional evaluator of horses, this is just for fun. :))
——
The Sarrana Riding Pony
The Sarrana Riding Pony is a relatively new breed becoming known for its bright colors and bold personalities. To be registered as breeding stock, the following qualities must be met:
Height
The Sarrana should be definitively pony-sized, with the preferred height being 13.2 hands at maturity. An individual above 14.2 hands or under 12 hands is considered ineligible for registration.
Build
The Sarrana is considered to be lightly built; despite being a pony breed, they should not have a “stocky” appearance. They should be refined without being delicate. The shoulders, croup, hocks, and pasterns should be sloped as befitting an active, agile breed, and the overall build should be slightly uphill, with withers slightly higher than the croup. The back should not be over-long and should have no swaying or roaching. Tail and head are naturally carried high. The face is lightly dished, with a broad forehead and small, upright, active ears.
Coat and Color
The coat is overall smooth, straight, and short, with no feathering on the legs. The only acceptable color is bright red bay with minimal black points. The black stockings should not continue past the knees or hocks, and stopping below the fetlocks is preferable. The main body color should be solid red-brown, with no roaning, dappling, or white spotting. Mane and tail should be solid black and straight haired, full without being bushy. Small white socks on any feet and minimal white stars and snips on the face are acceptable, but high white stockings and large blazes are considered a fault. Eyes are dark and solid.
Temperament
While by nature more difficult to define than conformation, the ideal Sarrana should have a bold, inquisitive and outgoing disposition. They are inherently curious, intelligent, and active; unfortunately, this means they are also prone to mischief if under-stimulated. While they may be inclined to be willful, they should not be aggressive or overly forceful. They thrive with a human partner who will challenge them to learn new things and conquer new obstacles, but can easily grow bored and sour if confined to the same routine for too long.
Uses
The Sarrana Riding Pony is, as the name implies, primarily a pleasure riding pony. Their bold natures lead them to thrive on trails and in the jumping ring, but also make them a poor choice for new riders or only being ridden in the ring on the flat. They are usually willing to try anything at least once, as long as their human partner convinces them it is acceptably interesting, and their general athleticism means they can accomplish at least the basic levels of most disciplines.

That was fun to write! If you were writing one for one of your lines, what would it look like? ;)Post edited by erisna at 2021-11-14 08:00:44I mostly play on mobile so I can't usually see signatures!

Here’s mine! I had loads of fun and spent way more time then I should have.
_____
Black dog Blue
a generally private owned line of horses know for their spectacular silver blue roan coats. All horses trace back to the founder of the breed “black dog serenade”. To be registered as a black dog blue equines must fit the following qualifications.
Height
Though there is no true height qualification for Black dog blues they typically stand between 14.2 and 16.3. Our horses vary in size to fit all riders and disciplines.
Build
Black dog blues are built big enough to derail a freight train yet small enough to turn on a dime. Black dog blues should have a short back, large hip, and sturdy shoulder. They should have a present wither and not be mutton backed.
Coat and color
Black dog blues have a sleek and shiny coat. a distinct silver blue roan color is required for registration. This coat is accompanied by large white socks and white faces (the splash gene). Frame is a well desired gene among black dog blues. However due to the risks associated with the gene it is not a requirement.
Temperament
Black dog blues are some of the most reliable horses on the market. They’re incredibly brave, sensible, polite, and trustworthy creatures. They’re safe for your grandkids and grandmas, but still spirited enough for an experienced adventurous rider to have fun. These horses grow close with people and form strong bonds. However, black dog blues have a memory that compares to no other. If you do wrong by one they don’t forgive.
Uses
Black dogs blues were designed for ranch work. Their silver coats can blend into almost any scenery. This quickly helped the breed take off and spread throughout the US. Black dog blues are still heavily used on ranch’s and make incredible trail horses. Black dog blues can be found on the rodeo circuit as well as in the show world. from reining and cutting to dressage and cross country their is very little these horses can not do.
Here’s an example of what the ideal black dog blue should encompass. (This is also the founder of the breed black dog serenade)
BL1 Black Dog Serenade -
Chayil Riding Horses and Ponies
The Chayil (pronounced khah'-yil) is a bold, talented, high quality sport horse. They are usually recognizable by distinctive Appaloosa patterning and dun base coats, though they may come in any pattern or colour.
Height
The Chayil is most typically between 12-15 hands, although larger and smaller are also acceptable.
Build
The Chayil is typically a light boned horse, with elegant features similar to an Arabian. Stockier warmblood-types do exist, but are not usually desirable. There is a rare line of Cob-type Chayil horses that are acceptable as long as they meet the general spirit and quality of the Chayil sport horse.
Coat and Colour
Light and medium Chayil Sport Horses have short, smooth coats and plenty of mane and tail. The cob type may have feathers. The Chayil horse is known for dark, rich base colours, frequently liver. The dun dilution is extremely common, sometimes possessing very bold primitive markings. Most Chayil horses also have Appaloosa patterning, preferably with big bold spots. Pinto patterning is also acceptable, and the somewhat rare “Medicine Hat” combination of patterns is highly prized. Eyes may be brown, gold, or blue.
Temperament
The Chayil Sport Horse is bold, brave, and strong. While not overly hot, they have plenty of energy to throw into whatever task you ask of them. They very trainable and make very willing partners who enjoy having a job. If left idle too long, they may become mischievous and naughty.
Uses
The Chayil Sport Horse is most commonly seen in the jumper ring, their natural boldness helps them successfully fly through any course. This same bravery also means they’re generally down for anything their rider asks of them, making them very versatile horses.

I would love to do this as a contest for all 3 servers, if you don't mind, @erisna!
I think I could even make the winners a horse that meets their breed standards!
(Everyone who has already described their breed could use this as their entry)

I copy and pasted your format since you had it itemized and layed out neatly ^_^
The Gentle Giant
The Gentle Giants are a heavy draft breed with thick fur, the following qualities must be met:
Height
The Gentle Giants must be at least 17 hands tall, with no maximum height. Those horses who meet the rest of the standards and are at least 16 hands but not a full 17 can be registered as Gentle breeding stock but are not qualified for shows. Anything under 16 hands is considered ineligible for registration.
Build
The Gentle Giants must have a bone weight of at least 3 for showing and at least 2.5 for breeding stock. The frame should be large, supported by clean, dense bone. Gentle Giants should have well-defined withers, hind quarters, and loins. Its legs should be muscular, while its hooves must be strong and firm. The back should not be too long, and should be strong. The shoulders should be sloping, deep and muscular. Ideally, hip and wither height should be equal, without too much of a slope toward the center of the back. Eyes should be large, well set and kindly in expression. Any eye color is acceptable including but not limited to, brown, blue, hazel, green and amber or any combination thereof. In trotting, the Gentle Giants should show good suspension and extension with no tendency toward racking or gaited movement. The canter should be measured and powerful without any suggestion of clumsiness or stiltedness.
Coat and Color
All Variations are allowed although Champagne, Bays and Blacks are most common. Feathering is not required but if the horse does have feathering it should be nice and thick.
Temperament
As the name implies the Gentle Giants should be calm and relaxed in manner. Intelligent and aware of their surroundings but not prone to shying or panic.
Uses
Used for a variety of things the Gentle Giant should be a versitile and all around horse that can pull heavy hauls, be used for driving and riding.

This would be so much fun as a contest! Truly brilliant! The Reverentia Riding Horse
The Reverentia Riding Horse is a older, but unknown breed that is fast becoming known for its striking array of colour and patterns. There is two distinct colour registries as they move to secure their standings in the show ring. Their awe inspiring personalities lend much to their naming as they grace the show ring with their elegance. To be registered as breeding stock, the following qualities must be met:
Height
The Reverentia Riding Horse has the preferred height being 15.2 and up but never exceeding 17 hands or falling under 14. 2 hands. An individual under 14.2 hands or over 17 hands is considered ineligible for registration.
Build
The Reverentia Riding Horse is considered to be lightly built, they should not have a “stocky” appearance. Their most identifiable characteristics are its finely chiseled head, dished face, long arching neck and high tail carriage. Its entire appearance exudes energy, intelligence, courage and nobility. Every time an Reverentia moves, he announces to the world his proud, graceful nature. The Neck is a long arched neck, set on high and running well back into moderately high withers, they have short back and the croup comparatively horizontal. A Reverentia has a natural high tail carriage. Viewed from rear, tail should be carried straight.
Coat and Color
The coat is overall smooth, straight, and short, with no feathering on the legs. There is a small amount that may show an almost metallic sheer to their coats, this is not required for registry and one that does show this metallic sheen is accepted into the registry. All colourings are acceptable as well, but most prefer the darker chestnuts to blacks. The Reverentia Chimera is particularly sought after, the more striking in its colour the sought after it is. A proven Reverentia Chimera stallion or mare that can produce other Chimera colouring is the holy grail of these horses.
The registry defers into two distinct areas in the amount of white that they show.
All Appaloosa patterned horses must not carry any other KIT (Tobiano, Roan, White Spotting, Sabino), PAX3 (Splash 2), MITF (Splash, Splash 3) or EDNRB (Frame) and Visa Versa. Appaloosa patterned may carry a number of different varnishing, snowflake varnishing and halo varnishing, both are encouraged in this breeding. In the KIT breeding a variety of the amount is white is accepted.
Accepted Appaloosa Reverentia Stallion
BRIND1 Accomplish This
BRIND1 Slate of Halo CS
Accepted KIT Reverentia Stallion
BRIND1 Simple But Elegant
CRVS1 Sea Wolf
Temperament
The ideal Reverentia is also classified as a "hot-blooded" breed, refined, spirited horse bred for speed with a naturally good disposition. Their sensitivity and intelligence enable quick learning and greater communication with their riders; however, their intelligence also allows them to learn bad habits as quickly as good ones. They do not tolerate inept or abusive training practice. When treated badly, like any horse, they can become excessively nervous or anxious, but seldom become vicious unless seriously spoiled or subjected to extreme abuse. They thrive with a human partner that they have bonded with. Many will become a "one person" horse and are not suited for multitude of different riders. As they age, this might be accomplished but still not recommended.
Uses
The Reverentia Riding Horse is a versatile breed. From the show ring at halter to the cow cutting of the working ranch these horses are willing to try anything. From the inexperienced to the experienced as long as they have bonded with their humans they are up for anything.

The Cumryian
The Cumryian Horse is an ancient breed with origins in the rough mountains of northern Wales. Cumryians could be found there before the first Roman invasion of Britain in 55 B.C. The original Cumryians were short and stocky, rarely growing beyond 14 hands. It has been demonstrated that Cumryians cross well with many other breeds, and thus, through the ages, the Cumryian has become larger and much more refined. An animal of great beauty and refinement, the Cumryians has the substance, stamina and soundness of his ancestors. At present, there are two divisions: The Cumryian Horses and The Cumryian Pony.
Height
The modern Cumryian horse is typically between 15 to 17 hands. Occasionally an individual will mature slightly under or over the average height. The Cumryian pony must remain at 14.2 hands or less.
Build
The Cumryian is fine boned and elegant yet should never be considered delicate. They have a slightly dished face with a large kind eye. Their refined, arched neck ties in nicely to a laid-back shoulder. They have well-sprung ribs, a short coupled body and horizontal croup. They are renowned for their luxurious mane and tail and their regally high tail set.
Coat and Color
Cumryian Horses have short, smooth coats. They come in all colors and patterns. Their eyes come in three colors, brown, gold, and blue. with preference given to blue eyed individuals.
Temperament
Cumryians are extremely intelligent and easily trained. They really enjoy working in most disciplines and seem to radiate happiness as they go about their jobs. They have easy going, friendly personalities but they should never be mistaken for dull. Some like to refer to them as “pocket Ponies”, but they can be challenging enough for even the most exacting equestrian. In short, they have what many old time horsemen call “Heart”.
Uses
The Cumryian Horse can be found competing in nearly every equine discipline: Hunters, Jumpers, Dressage and they also excel at Driving; Pleasure Driving, Carriage, Roadster, Fine Harness, and CDEs. Both the horses and ponies can often be seen competing in ADS sanctioned events. Cumryians are also widely used as pleasure horses and the ponies make exceptional children’s mounts. All in all, they are a very versatile athlete.
Here is an exceptional example of the Cumryian:

This is a great idea! Really enjoyed reading about everyone's unique breeds.
The Arcturus Riding Horse
The Arcturus Horse is an older breed, recently seeing a resurgence. It is thought to have originated in the Middle East alongside similar breeds such as the Arabian and the Akhal-Teke. However, due to its large size, it was thought ill-suited for desert travel and not extensively domesticated. In the last 200 years, the breed has been crossed with a variety of warmbloods in eastern Europe, resulting in a slight thickening in the bone weight in the present breed. Today, Arcturus Horses are used in a variety of disciplines but usually excel at any task involving speed and maneuverability.
Height
Arcturus Horses are epitomized by their tall, graceful build. For registration, a horse must be at least 16 hh, with 16.5 hh and above being preferred.
Build
The Arcturus Horse has a lighter build, although some will exhibit a slightly heavier frame. The head is long and refined, with a slightly concave profile. The neck should be arched, over tall shoulders and a slightly narrow back. Some members of the breed will still exhibit high tail carriage, but this is not required for registration. The overall build should demonstrate lean musculature with particularly strong hindquarters for bursts of speed over short distances.
Coat and Color
Arcturus Horses have coats of middling thickness, not particularly coarse, but with enough insulation to survive in colder conditions if necessary. To be eligible for registration, horses must be black in colour, with white spotting, and a satin sheen. While rarer, some members will be Silver Black. It is also possible for some members of the breed to exhibit particularly extensive white expression and appear completely white.
Temperament
Arcturus Horses are hot-blooded with quick and active minds. The breed is known for being easy to startle if taken by surprise and usually require a calm and experienced rider to bring out their best. Many Arcturus Horses enjoy testing the limits and are quite willing to take on a leadership role if their rider is not paying close attention. This said, members of the breed form strong bonds with members of their herd and can be extremely loyal to trusted riders.
Uses
Today it is rare for the Arcturus Horse to be used for work. Instead, the Arcturus Horse is most frequently used for pleasure riding or competition in dressage, although more and more members of the breed are beginning to make a name for themselves in barrel racing and liberty work. They typically do not make for good racing or cross country horses, although a few have distinguished themselves in the show jumping arena. In the past, the breed was frequently used in wartime as a light cavalry horse and was also used for herding/cutting.
Exemplars of the breed include
Abyssal Secrets, a well-known stud and liberty horse
Abyssal Secrets G1
King's Ornament, a noted dressage performer

This is such a cool idea! I also copied your template haha :))
The Crystalline Appaloosa
The Crystalline Appaloosa is a high quality non-lethal variant of the stock type ApHC Appaloosa with unique color bases and varying unique Appaloosa patterns. Crossed with halter or racing type builds, creating a type more apt to high level Dressage and Jumping events. To be registered as breeding stock, the following qualities must be met:
Height
The Crystalline Appaloosa has no height limit per se, but they must be horses, not ponies (14.2h+)!
Build
While the Crystalline Appaloosa is often crossed with two very different build types, the general stock build should remain. A round circular hip, short neck and back, small and square head, a horse well put together. Long faces, long pasterns, roman noses, dorsal-type withers, and any kind of feathering is undesired.
Coat and Color
As the name states, a Crystalline Appaloosa is an appaloosa. Appaloosa genes are required, there is no additional registry for solids. Any dark, rich, base color is allowed, but a true Crystalline Appaloosa has a sooty base with Cream, Dun, Silver, or Champagne dilutes underneath their spots. As for coat markings, any Appaloosa variant or combination of the following is accepted; Snowflake, Varnish, Peacock, Leopard, Blanket & Few spot. As for white genes, a quality of the Crystalline Appaloosa is non-lethality. Meaning any white gene carrying Crystalline Appaloosa has low to no risk white genes, including; Splash, Roan, Rabicano, and W20.
Temperament
A Crystalline Appaloosa should always be forward, agile, and athletic, but also attentive and level headed. The ideal Crystalline Appaloosa is the kind of a horse you can take to a Show on a whim and expect to place well on.
Uses
While the Crystalline Appaloosa was bred with the intent to have Appaloosa representation at the Prix level, the Crystalline Appaloosa is an extremely versatile breed. While best suited for Dressage and Eventing (both western and english) over pleasure, the Crystalline Appaloosa is a trail horse, halter horse, kids horse, family horse, and much more.
